I'm hoping this is the rigHTC forum for this discussion. Can't see anywhere else it would fit.
Do the novels cover anything at all about Shepard or is it all back story about Anderson, Sanders and TIM? I'm asking because I have my own headcanon when it comes to Shepard and I don't want anything in the novels to contradict it.

The novels don't really cover Shepard at all, except to mention the character in passing (Shepard is a Spectre, missing, etc).

I stopped reading the novels and comics because at one point everyone had a link with everyone, a group of 30 characters seemed to be running the whole galaxy and because of that made the universe feel very small.

Just make sure you never, ever read this one. Like ever. Don't do it. The other novels are pretty good, with the first one being my favorite.

That book is canon-non-grata.
The other ones, Revelation, Ascension & Retribution are pretty good reading. Retribution does suffer a bit by comparison if you've played ME1, as some of the dialogue and information is lifted almost word-for-word from it.

OK, thanks. The reason I asked about Shepard is because I have my own headcanon where Shepard is concerned. For example, I don't want the books telling me the gender or love interest of Shepard. Backstory from the others that I don't control is fine with me.

Backstory from the others that I don't control is fine with me. They're mostly about Anderson and Kahlee, if anything. And you won't get much backstory on TIM, except the comics.

I love Ascension but it went downhill with Retribution (I figure its due to ME3 stories not being finalized until the publication). Kahlee and Anderson are just wallpaper characters whereas Grayson and Kai Leng are the lead of the novel.
And I don't think everything in Retribution are canon. ME3 only mention Anderson shooting Kai Leng in the leg and Grayson being a red sand addict and the first test subject for the implant but not about his daughter and that he was clean but forced by Cerberus to take red sand again. There's no mention of Aria's daughter either.

Kahlee is pretty much Drew's "self insert"-character. She is? Why's that? I like her.. If there's one thing I miss without him in ME3, it's this. He had a bigger point to make about humanity and the ascension project in the overall story. While Mac is too much of an Asari fan to get it. lol

There's no mention of Aria's daughter either. The book states that Aria went to great lengths to prevent people from knowing she had a daughter. IIRC in the book it states that never publicly acknowledged her daughter (similarly the way Aethyta never publicly acknowledged that she was Liara's father).

Liara was aware who her father was since ME1, (more aptly paternal gene donor), she just assumed she abandoned her family and didn't care to seek her out. Aethyta herself stayed away because she didn't want to jeopardize Benezia's status among their people. The Matriarchs knew who Liara is to Aethyta that they send her to spy on the Shadow Broker twice. They're estranged but none of it show they're keeping their relationship secret.
One of the greater inconsistency in the novel was Aria making a deal with Illusive Man soon after her daughter's murder by Cerberus operative. Grayson being taken by Cerberus aren't exactly a secret. None of this was referred in ME3, Omega DLC and ME Invasion. However, it wasn't surprising that the Asari was more or less attached to their children after they reach Maiden years.

The novels are primarily focused on Cerberus. It's all Cerberus, all the time.
Only the first book is Cerberus-free. It is unsurprisingly also the best of the bunch.

Revelation is Anderson becoming Shepard v2. A brief story about fighting with his team, and then his life on Citadel, and being assigned to a Spectre mission, save the girl, be heroic, get betrayed. The only thing I like about the book was it have a female Batarian.
Ascension deals more Quarian lore and add more depth to biotics generally. Stuff that the game barely expand. I like that Kahlee is a middle-age woman and I realized I hardly read older adult protagonist like her. Retribution is more Cerberus-ey tho.

It's the only one I've bought so far, though I have yet to read it. I've been warned that there's plenty of dialogue lifted right from ME1 but I suppose that's to be expected.

Revelation is ok. I like reading a book set in the Mass Effect universe, filled with all the lore and crux of what makes the overall trilogy tick, and it is quite interesting in places learning of a few things that took place before ME1. For me, the best scenes (and ones with some of Drew's best dialogue) were The scenes involving Ambassador Goyle and the Council. She more than holds her own against the haughtiness of the three, and it was interesting to know of Udina''s predecessor. It's a shame we never met a female human like Goyle in the games, as all the key positions of power were filled by men. But overall, I agree with aiobhealfae that Revelation doesn't give us much more insight into Anderson as a character than the games already do, he becomes a fairly generic hero in what is a fairly generic plot, if you get to the barebones of it, taking away the distractions provided by the lore and greater picture it shows with things neatly tying into the beginning of ME1. That said, Saren is the character best treated and written in Revelation. Still ME's best villain. Ascension is my personal favourite, I agree with others here that is the best. A tighter, stronger core story, Anderson is pushed aside to allow Kahlee to develop, and she becomes a much stronger and more impactful character in this one. Other great characters introduced here include Hendel Mitra, and we also get a lot of time devoted to the quarians, which I appreciated. Ascension is the novel I greatly enjoyed most. It and Drew's prose is far from good, but the plot and narrative are what make the book worth reading. I was disappointing by the weaker Retribution. It's story was forgettable, the novel series best characters were underused in favour of weaker characters, and there was just way too much Cerberus. Avoided Deception like plague.
