*sigh* I keep running into OP enemies that ohk my party. Scarecrow stands in field. Lures my character. I know what you're up to. Scarecrow animates like 5 other smaller ones. OHK the witch - and that guy has the most protection. OK I go elsewhere. Paladins at bridge tell me "uhoo, oho, terrible horrible voidcritter ahead" I understand "you guys not up for task" I go other direction. Tried to sneak to a guy who fought against magisters. Guy teleports. NP, I can do, too. Just wanna help. Guy opens Voidcritter portals, turns enemy and suicides. Voidcritter spawn every turn. Enemy guy revives on top. WTF! I reload and go to investigate burning witch. Persuad 0/5. Boom - party dead. Reload, go back and attack maggisters. Can finally continue. Quest sends me into "terrible horrible voidcritter ahead"-land. So I guess I try that next. I get that challenge spices up things, but this isn't really funny. Problem for me was since the enemies don't scale to level, if you don't find and do every side quest out there, you can fall behind on levels. Making future enemies that much harder.

As Iakus said, it's best to do all the side quests to level up everyone so they can tackle the mobs. After the first bite, I avoid the tough mobs and find other quests, then come back again to face them when the party has level up a bit and with better gear.

I believe Larian Studios would want their products to reach other customers. What kind of gaming developers / publisher wouldn't?

After storming a castle with strange dwarfs I got sucked into an unexpected escape against all odds. I took the hint with the sneakily rearranged character order and expect to face even more horrors. Was about to hit the reload key unnerved of yet another OP battle but it turned out to be part of the tale.

So I just got this game and just escaped from the fort. I also keep dying a lot. Any tips for early game strategies? Restarted that bit like 7 times. I suggest building a team with clear focus on either magic or physical damage, lest you don't waste attacks on enemy defenses. Top priority is to burn down the health layer and for that one defense has to go. Mixed teams didn't do well for me. Rogues are still OK for tackling the physical though. I have a rogue/witch that can deal magic damage but most damage is from physical backstabbery and such. It's the character that forces weak stuff to relocate and incur opportunity hits, preferrably in the back. Haven't explored much of the other physical stuff. Except polymorph. Seems quite strong spells to me. They went on the witch, too. Spice up your defence. Give mages shields and a wand. With shileds they can regen part of that shields protections as item ability. Consider teleport spells to control enemies and local superiority. Primed surfaces can control enemy movement. Prioritise ranged stuff for killing and CC melee enemies. A summoner can deliver very strong additional units. Create explosions. Defense regen spells can be cast on teammates (i think) - consider those (e.g. fortify for physical, hydro spells for magic armour). right click, examine enemies and pick a damage that is best. damage resistances over 100% heal!!! OCD hogger of consumables like me? Just spend them. My inventory is clogging terribly, but I gotta hold on to the stuff, cause you never know what is around the corner. run out of spells? check "k" and see if you got more memory slots free. Fill them. Find a empty bottle dealer? Tell me. I wanna build more molotovs.

F5 is your friend. Screw those ironman purists.
There are likely situations that should be postponed for a later stage. I did so with the rose witch on Fort Joy. Impossible at first. Only a level later and upgraded equipment a cakewalk.
Sometimes you simply can't tell how an encounter will play out and if you're nosey like me you'll run into wiping in the first round. I still believe they won't screw scrubs like you and me totally.

I'll join the recommendation in regards to giving mages a shield and a wand, and in regards to the importance of teleport spells. +1 My mage started out dual-wielding wands, because cool. But the extra defense from shielding proved way too useful to not use.

So I finished the game yesterday for the first time and I found it a personal highlight in my experience, great game! Awesome characters I've met so far. Wish I knew the series earlier because it seems I missed out on a lot. The crafting however was a bit of a letdown. I've read that in the past crafting was a big element but was a bit baffled on its importance in this game. Mabye i'm doing it wrong? The final battle was weird though. Spoiler territory So my party was, custom + Beast + Red Prince + Lohse. Something weird happened on how the battle suddenly ended. The giant kraken (or what it's name might be, to focused on not dying) wanted to attack (its turn) my group who was close to each other. And *BAM* it died, battle over?
It still had 4/5 of magic shield, none physical and about all of its HP. So I'm thinking the reflect might have killed it, but its entire HP? The red Prince and my custom character had shields that could reflect and The red prince had deflect projectile. So could that have been it. I did have Braccus Rex surrounded through a teleport so maybe him and the kraken are linked?

I've read that in the past crafting was a big element but was a bit baffled on its importance in this game. Mabye i'm doing it wrong? I mostly bought it just to see what it was about. I expected some antiquated concept and ignoring dialogues, because I can't be arsed for some new background story and elves. In the end I picked the elf, find myself casually consuming the story and somehow enjoying the "antiquated concept" of isometric RPG. The production quality (amazing music), voice acting is one reason. Another is a combat system that I have never seen like that. I kinda like exploring new spells and possibilities they offer in battles. I'm just hoarding ingredients like crazy. It's always like that - you never know what's it good for and end up clogging your inventory. Yesterday I tried to find an item I just picked up. I couldn't find it. It might be a bug (quest end dint trigger either) or just me staring at 236 colourful mini-icons.

So I just got this game and just escaped from the fort. I also keep dying a lot. Any tips for early game strategies? 2x lone wolves are easier than a 4 man party because of the quadratic nature of stat increase (alot of stat multiplications). Focus on one type of damage: either magic or physical, the later tends to be a bit easier because of the one skill CC skills. CC is king. If going for physical, I think every character must have at least a single point in warfare for the slam and charge skills. Also polymorph is beneficial with the chicken and tentacle attacks. If going for magical, your best bet is going for a combination of water and air skills. Earth skills mostly slow and not disable. The wild card here is summoning, as while it does not disable enemies, it does distracts them. You aren't just going to burst down enemies in one turn, at least in the beginning of the game. Also, you won't be able to outsustain enemies with healing, as those spells are quite weak and the enemies hit hard and often smart. The second most important type of skills are teleportation and flight skills. Aim to have at least 1 per hero; there are the wings skill in polymorph, phoenix dive in warfare, teleport and nether swap in air skills, tactical retreat in huntsman, cloak and dagger in scoundrel. Aim to take high ground, use the highly versatile teleportation spell for your advantage. Alot of stuff is countered by fortify and magic armor skills, at least stack up scrolls of these if not outright learning the spells. Learn basic recipes. Crafting is very important in the beginning of the game as you wont have enough money to keep all gear up to date. Unlike the first game though later into the game crafting falls off except for selected recipes like cross school skill books. Don't go for the crocodiles before level 3, don't remove the collar before level 4.

Earth skills mostly slow and not disable. Earth skills do have a lot of utility, and some disabling effects as well. For example, Impalement sets cripple for one turn in an AoE, and Worm Tremor sets tangled for 2 rounds. And basically every earth spell sets you up for a nice AoE blast combo with fire. And then there's also Mend Armor for AoE heal of your physical armor, and poison which serves as healing for undead characters. There's a Geomancer & Huntsman combo skill that sets blinded and also clears surfaces. I don't know if I would say that it's the best skill group in the game, but it's certainly useful, especially so for undead. Geomancer has a certain duality in it. if you go purely physical, you benefit mostly from AoE cripple and slow, as well as the armor skills of course, but the damage wont be really relevant because it's all magic. If you go purely magic, you lose the 1 hit cripple option and you don't have spells to completely disable opponents like water or lightning magic. I don't like Mend Armor, IMO the armor gain is too small to be useful and it doesn't cancel debuffs unlike Fortify. Mind you that I play on tactician mostly, so enemies will just delete the mend bonus in one hit. I do have to say that Geomancy with an undead character and elemental affinity works really well from my experience, and those huntsman/geomancy spells are really great.

The final battle was weird though. Spoiler territory In regards to the spoiler, it might be a bug, as I'm not aware of any mechanic that should have caused something like that. Though personally I found that battle relatively easy due to the unlimited source points I had at the time, possibly due to earlier choices. Braccus and the Kraken are linked. Kill Brac and the Krak dies as well.

You need a special resource in order to make cursed Molotov-cocktail (source orbs IIRC). Which is admittedly rather annoying. Those are rare AF. No way I'd waste one on a consumable.

How long did you folk take about to complete the game? I'm still in the Driftwood region, apparently having unlocked the next island, but still got stuff to do in Driftwood.

I'm not really burning through the content neither. yesterday I took like maybe 1-2 hours for a fight. One reload at the beginning - then a hefty twist in the fight.
