I can't decide what I want! I'm super torn between playing an elf or dwarf like intended or one of those smexy lizzards... and then the build! I don't know how to build! My friend really likes fire, so I'm going to leave that to him, but at the same time that's what a battle-mage should specialize in.
The decisions are killing me!

@tzeenchianapostrophe can we both make our custom characters separately and then have him join my game? He won't get access to the full game until tomorrow, just the first part, so we thought we both could make our characters in preparation. Unless it is a new feature being added to the enhanced edition the answer is no, I don't even think it is possible for you to create him a character in anticipation of him joining your game (unless you some tricksy work arounds where you manage to fool the game into thinking you are playing from 2 computers and log into separate instances of the game). If you start the game before he joins then he will have to take control of one of the party member that join over the course of the game, if you both want to play custom characters then you need to start the game together.

My friend really likes fire, so I'm going to leave that to him, but at the same time that's what a battle-mage should specialize in. The decisions are killing me! By battlemage I take it you mean a melee oriented caster? Or are you merely talking about a mage focused on dealing the damage? Generally it is better to focus one damage stat and ignoring the rest, so if you are using swords, maces and axes you will mostly want to focus on strength. Finesse for bows crossbows and spears. And intelligence for wands and staves. This is not to say that a strength based warrior can't spec into magic based skill trees like aerothurge or geomancy (and there are many reasons why a warrior might want to spec into these trees) however it is best to only use abilities in these trees for afflicting status effects and buffing yourself and ignoring purely damage based abilities. Of course that said there are some skills that get their governing attribute from the type of weapon you are using so if you were to use a melee weapon like a staff or something a lot of abilities in the warfare tree would change their governing attribute to intelligence.

Alright, sorry for drowning you all in questions, but I still haven't been able to play because my friend is sick so I'm spending all my time detailing my character: things is, I love the corpse-eating thing with elves, but I'm not a fan of the leafy armor - is all armor like that or can they have more "normal" looking armor like the battle-mage version in the CC?
I'm still super torn on what kind of build I will be going for, my heart is kinda screaming for ranger but I want this character to be different from the one I made last time.

Armor appearances change as you go up in level, but each character has their own "theme", based on race and the type of armor. I know Sebille had really leafy looking armor as a rogue for me. Plate and cloth may look different, I don't know.

If you're like me it'll be a whole month before you finally decide what race and build you want. I couldn't pick between undead necromancer and elf rogue so I mained the undead and added an elf rogue to the group.

^ Wow, a whole month. The elf was a shock for me; corpse eating, leafy armor, weird body. I mean, what're those ridges on the torso? I'm so used to the Tolkien elves so I was repulsed at first (corpse eating???) when I went through the CC. But I was open to a different kind of elf interpretation / lore of a different world so I gradually came to accept and like it. I didn't take a lot of care with the classes. I was more interested in the story so I jumped into it pretty quick. Wheeee!!!!

I feel silly caring so much about the armor, I just find it ridiculous for anyone going into battle covered in just leafs. I want something like they had in their promo art: or not

I suppose it's magic armor leaves. I agree though, the leaf armor are awful. DOS2 elves reminds me of GW2 "elves" (sylvari); they're covered with leafy stuff too. However, the armor for GW2 sylvari are slightly better. At least they covered appropriately and don't look half-assed. The other thing I cannot understand is; why boobs? All Sylvari are born from the Pale Tree. I'll presume DOS2 elves are born from trees / seeds or from the Mother. It's the same case as; why boobs on turian females?

Like, I know I'm going to love the gameplay, but I have to admit I'm a bit critical of some of the design choices and looks in the game. The faces on many of the characters are weird to say the least, and then there are some features I find off-putting (like the extreme boobs of female dwarfs, the leafy armor on elves, the hair on the elves having too faint color on some styles).
Honestly, to me it looks like the lizards are the only ones they got perfectly right in terms of design of both looks and armor. Despite not being really fond of that type of character I'm constantly drawn to them when browsing the CC.

The only thing I found annoying in terms of design was the the elves. There was a mod on Steam that gave them proper armor, I deed to check if it was updated for the definitive edition. Can you get back to me about any non-story stuff they added/changed? I don't dare look for spoilers... Seeing all the amazing mods makes me wish we had that for ps4, they look great!

Eh, once a game has decided to go for a more cartoony style, which the Divinity series certainly has, silly armor does not bother me in the slightest. Might as well complain of the art direction in the Warcraft series. I confess, I am bothered by the general trend of people who persistently ignore the fact that fantasy, and fiction in general, are not real Sorry for being cheeky, but I have encountered multiple variations on this theme just today. Why does the game not explain how such and such fantasy race gets its food, why does this fantasy race have sexual organs, why use this absurd leafy armor. Realism has ruined fantasy fiction. Nice job breaking it, Tolkien. /cranky old man rant of the day Anyway, off to play the game!

From what I understand they practically rewrote the entire third act of the game as well.

I am slowly narrowing things down. I will be a dwarf, I will be a melee mage, I will use sword and shield... just need to decide what skill trees and stats to start with.
Would a summoner battle mage be weird? I like summoning, but it seems more advanced than in the first one.

I like the idea @tzeenchianapostrophe but you don't think it will end up coming into conflict with my friend's fire specs? I have considered doing something more air related as well. I'd like to explore the polymorph tree a bit too given that it's new.

Polymorph is good fun for strength based builds and considering each point put into polymorph gives you an extra stat point to spend it is probably better the invest in that than the weapon based skills.

Alright, we finally got started! Eventually decided to just go with what I liked and so picked a dwarven female cleric named Arryn and specced in warfare and geomancing. My friend is going pure mage with fire and water (weird I know, I think he mostly wants the healing as I was the primary healer last game).
Good to finally get started! It really feels different even though a lot seems to be the same. I'm gonna have to do some reading on how memory and different types of armor work now though.

Next issue - who to bring and how to spec them! I want to bring them all! I've almost regrouped with everyone from the boat (except the male human and Fane), and I'm torn between picking characters I like and characters we need. Like, I like the dwarf a lot, and I liked the human and Fane, but we'd probably do best with the Red Prince and Sebille.
If I could have my way I'd probably go with Beast and the human, but...

Remember you can make any companion any class. While they have racial bonuses that may work better with one class than another, you can make the Beast an Enchanter or Fane a Rogue if that's what you want in your team.

I recently picked this game up on the Xbox, even though I have it on the PC too. Oh well, more money to good developers I guess.
Anyways, I was wondering, do I have to get to any specific location to get Sir Lorca, the squirrel knight? And do I have to have the 'Pet Pal' talent to be able to speak to him?
Also, I'm planning a run though I am debating on which character to pick. The pre-gens have way more flavor and interactivity with the world than the custom avatars, so I think I'll go in that direction. The major hinderance I am running into now is deciding on what 'class' to play the given character as. I'm down between either Fane, Lohse, or the Red Price but I'm not sure which one to go with for my initial console run, or what build will work best with their unique abilities.

Giving PP to companions won't work, he only speaks to the protag.

So, knowing that 'Pet Pal' will be "required" which pre-gen character would that benefit, or at least have the less hinderance because of that pick? Roleplaying wise I'm thinking that Lohse would fit that talent the best, though I wonder if she needs a different talent at the start to better help her survive. I'll be playing on classic difficulty (though not tactician mode), if that's any help.

Incidentally, I chose Lohse for the present PT and opted to drop the default skill for PP, without knowing that it's required for Sir Lora. I picked PP based on my experience in the classic PT. I would think both Sebille and Lohse are suited for the innate talent. One is born of the woods, the other a musician who would have more empathy for living things others would ignore or despised.

Roleplaying wise I'm thinking that Lohse would fit that talent the best I mean, Ben-Mezd has this nifty wolf for a friend, so he might be good at talking to animals as well, who knows... But largely I'm assuming that this is just a sorcerer thing. I thought about that, but isn't his wolf more of a spirit animal? Seems more like a soul bond than actually speaking to the wolf. I figured on Lohse because it fit with her whole 'voices in my head' theme: "Oh of course Lohse, that dog really is talking to you." Well I guess I have my character picked, now I just need to decide on an appropriate build. I figured summoning would be thematically appropriate, but I wonder how useful that skill set is on the harder difficulties.
