Nothing like popping a couple of boosters for gold to find out your gracious host is either:

Hacking the game (instakilling things with one shot just isn't fun)
Or
Lives on the other side of the world.
Being raped to death by alien dogs while I'm doing my best impression of a human vibrator, also isn't fun.
I'm sure it's someone's fetish. Just not mine.

It's not like we receive any reward for dropping out. So where would the harm be in removing them from inventory afterwards?

I've wondered about this myself. I have long had a vague feeling that there must be something resembling a good reason for the status quo...in other words, that doing the accounting at extraction may open some avenue for motivated players to "game" the system. I haven't figured out what that is or *how* that would be done but, for whatever reason, I've always suspected that it was the case. Otherwise why is it the way it is? Does anyone have in mind a scenario in which doing the bean counting at extraction would open up a new form of corruption?

If it isn't about preventing some form of cheat/hack/etc, is there a technical/design desideratum that is fulfilled by the current mechanism? I'm not techie enough to know...

This was the same in ME3 wasn't it? With maybe the exception that you could quit that without doing anything and maybe keep the boosters. Just one more thing they could have fixed and didn't.

It's probably because of "limitations" from the way consumables work in single player. Consume item -> gain effect. Pretty sure they could work around that to refund the items if no experience was gained after using them, but I'll be surprised if they change this.

Just have to echo what's already been said. Don't use consumables on a new host, particularly a game in progress. If they stay for another and the first game was stable, use whatever you like and keep your fingers crossed... Metaphorically speaking.
