Let's face it - Ryder would be completely FUCKED without SAM. He does everything for them in this game.
Need to go somewhere, but don't know where? No problem, scan away, SAM will figure it out. Need to get through a door but can't override the console? SAM will do it for you, of course.
It almost seems to me at times that Ryder has no clue what they're actually doing, and is only following instructions from SAM. The quest during the main campaign when Ryder infiltrates the kett ship and SAM saves their ass by stopping Ryder's heart demonstrates this perfectly. Ryder couldn't get out of the stasis field on their own. What would Ryder do if SAM wasn't there?
Fucking die, that's what.

You could have made the very same argument in favor of EDI relative to Shepard in 2 and 3, based on this logic

So….is this supposed to be a bad thing? If EDI wasn't around to do her magic, Shepard & co would have been trapped in the Collector ship and probably taken back to the base.

OP somewhat reminds me of XCOM: Declassified

So….is this supposed to be a bad thing It's just a further demonstration that Bioware's storytelling isn't very intuitive these days. On the one side wanting to enpower players by having them make meaningful decisions while on the other side having to be totally dependent on a omnipresent plot device for opening doors and interacting with Alien tech isn't a very good balance. A pretty basic rule in storytelling is that powerfull things should be limited appropriately. If SAM was just there to translate Alien languages and interface with Remnant I'd have much less problem with it.

This is just one big advertisement for new Musk's project pretending to be a game. I'm telling you. Unfit for the job you got? Sam will tell you what to do. Have no idea how to turn something on? Let Sam handle it. Barely speak your own language, but got your hands on some alien manga? Sam just needs a few minutes to learn and translate it. Nature wasn't kind on your health? Sam will pump you up. Constantly catching flu during winter? Sam can make sure you'll never get too cold. Something is broken and the only thing you see is that it's apparently on fire? Just scan the damn thing, Sam holds all the expertise you need. Remember when someone stole your favorite pencil in school ten years ago? Thanks to Sam justice will be served, just scan your old desk and Sam will find the culprit. Like literally where he is right now. Install Sam today and all the puzzles of universe won't be puzzles anymore.*

did anyone else find it odd that SAM suddenly couldn't provide a map when things got turned upside-down? Why would it matter what was floor and what was ceiling? Not to mention there is technology today that can map an area regardless of floors, walls and ceilings.

Yeah SAM pretty much is always there to bail you out of any situation you can't handle. On that we agree...but that doesn't make them the main character. Main character is simply the POV from which we are supposed to see through or the focal point of the cast of characters.
Your main character can be a complete useless dumbass that wouldn't make it 10 feet without their sidekick or supporting cast...but they're still the main character.

Hero, strongest, skillful, etc doesn't make someone the main character though.
