This is certainly my opinion, but I think any DLC for most franchises/games should be used to as a way to add new features to games and give the devs an opportunity to take more risks with game designs.
For a game as massive as Mass Effect Andromeda there are so many risks that the game developers take to present a fresh experience to its audience. I, for one, love the new open world aspects of Mass Effect, but it's a turn off for many people. I would like to see more changes instead of treading on familiar grounds.
One risky feature I think would be adding in space combat/manual flight. Looking at how No Man's Sky was originally advertised before it flopped, being able to pilot a ship from planet surface to orbit and then warp to another planet could work well with Mass Effect. Engaging in combat while flying in orbit, or flying around an "anomaly" would work really well in this game if done right. Of course limiting where we can enter the atmosphere of planet and landing in a specific area like EOS' open world area would make the most sense. DLC could also explain why we aren't using the Tempest and would give us a three manned fighter craft. Entering and exiting the atmosphere of planets can still be cutscenes or the can use the assets that they used for entering the atmosphere of Habitat 7 via shuttle. If successful, the devs can expand upon this mechanic in future games.
Thoughts?
What other risky game mechanics would you like to see? Do you think DLC is appropriate or would you rather something like this be implemented in the next game?

Starship piloting is too much, I think, unless it's already very well developed pre-release. Even then, I think it would just feel out of place.
I'd rather they focus on top-notch story content, and avoid the "Firewalker" stuff. If it's free, that blunts the annoyance, somewhat. Still, I'd prefer more story, worlds and such, to supplement the existing game.
I'm also in favor of (inexpensive or free) weapons and appearance packs, since those always seem to add a great deal to my fun. I want the ubiquitous AI Uniform that you and I discussed. It looks great with varied colors. Additional armor is always welcome. Also, I need a functional Avenger AAX5 "Ghost". Make it happen, BioWare!

Hell yeah on the Ghost X5 On the topic of starship piloting being too much, I agree, there isn't even a stick or wheel to move the ship around like many other vehicles in ME, like the Nomad, it doesn't have A STEERING WHEEL!!

In the case of Andromeda, I disagree wholeheartedly. They need to focus on writing and sidequest design more than anything else right now.

Although the combat and mechanics in general are very good, I still foudn the on-rails quests (like the main missions or the loyalty missions) to be the most fun combat-wise. So whatever they do, they don't need to add another open world planet. I'd rather have a lengthy on rails experience.

I'd be very surprised if we dont get at least one new open world zone.
The problem with experimenting with a grand deskgn change is that it requires more funds to build the dlc, likely leading to a smaller sized dlc or one that is a lot more expensive. For this game I hope they just focus on adding story content. Its why I play Mass Effect, for the story.

I dunno. I'm not averse to seeing BioWare take risks, but I'm not sure if I want to see it in a paid for DLC. While piloting would be a novel experience in this series I don't know if this is the time to do it. Make it a planned, well developed aspect of the game. Give it the attention it needs to be done right. I'm not sure if DLC is the right place to do it.

I'd imagine it'll be more about the Andromeda galaxy and lore than new mechanics. Maybe see this Quarian etc ark, more completion on the Nexus, a lost Angaran colony, that kind of thing..

Piloting can be a great addition if the circumstances are right. An example of a somewhat new gameplay mechanic in Mass Effect used in a fun sequence was the sky car chase on Illium. Granted, it wasn't the most user friendly controls, but it was still a lot of fun because of the commentary of Shepard and Liara and the imagery was pretty stellar.
Just spitballing an idea, perhaps a scenario where you're trying to escape, sort of like when Legion is piloting that geth fighter out of the dreadnought, but this time you're the one at the controls to get out of the fire or something. I dunno. I feel it's one of those things where it should feel like an event in the mission that may never happen again, which made it all the more entertaining. As mentioned, please nothing like Firewalker. Good gods was that awful.

Doesn't sound like DLC material to me. Now if they wanted to make a Mass Effect space combat sim spin off game, I'd be all for it. Although, in all honesty, they probably wouldn't do a great job of it; space combat games seem to have been defeating game developers since the 90s (to this day, I still crave Freespace 3).

This is space combat! (except they should provide the gamer whether to toggle 1st or 3rd person camera.)

Giant robots and space combat are some of the hardest things to get right and Bioware has been having trouble with frostbite. Battlefront 1 had flying combat and 2 is supposed to have it but other than that I don't think anyone has actually tried it. Being able to fight enemies outside of space stations does sound cool though. We kinda did it in ME1 on the Citadel.
