So, I'm far enough into my playthrough that I have put everything into soldier that I can ever reasonably want to use, and have points to burn on other stuff. So, I see in both the biotic and tech sections that some of the passives increase your weapon weight allowance, which is kinda important to me since I lug around at least 2 guns at all times, the BW and a Valkyrie. I would love to add a third gun, but can't without power cooldowns becoming prohibitive.
So, I guess the question is: Can I use a soldier profile, with the tech and biotic passives maxxed out, and get the benefits from those passives?

I asked this question myself a few weeks ago, and the consensus at the time was that the passives from the other trees do still work. Which is nice :-)

SKill passives always work.
Profile passives only work while that profile is active.

Soooo, without going for a full on cheese build I could play an Overload/Incinerate/Turbocharge Soldier with those skills, plus ARs and Sniper Rifles and the passives from each tree maxxed out and not depend on the crappy soldier skills for priming and detonating?
Interesting. I see a skill reset happening when I get home. I have a ton of points wasted in the soldier and biotic trees that I never use any more because I just don't see the value in swapping profiles mid-combat only to have all my skills go on cooldown when the only real reason to swap profiles is to get access to different skills.
Excess points get dumped in soldier tree, to raise the soldier level up to 6 for max profile bonus, of course.

To get Soldier Rank 6, you need EVERY skill maxed except one, which you need to drop a single point in. That's 232 points wasted for +20% Weapon Damage, +35% Accuracy, +12 DR, +35% Clip Size. Marksman's Focus is the exact same buff no matter what level your Soldier Profile is. The biggest appeal of maxing out all the combat powers is that every point spent in Combat increases the effectiveness of your weapon passives. If you're going for combos, though, you'd be better off with another Profile anyway. Soldier isn't designed for a lot of combos. They don't need them.

Yeah, I started out primarily tech, but once I'd taken 3 of those powers to level 6 and started investing in some of the passives, I went to the combat trees to start investing points in the weapons skills. Biotic offers some useful barrier / shield passives.

When I think of wasted points, I think of points put into things I am not using, of which in this game the primary culprits are active skills not on my hotbar. Right now, I have grenades, pull and that single point in Remnant VI doing absolutely nothing for me. I could strip those points out, plus strip out the points I spent on Concussive shot Flak Cannon (currently used) and instead grab Overload and Incinerate and the Tech passives to go with the AR/Sniper/Turbocharge/Soldier passives I plan to continue using. I'm level 43, which means I think I have enough points to make every skill I use, plus all the tech and soldier passives, rank 6. Once that is done, any excess points I have can be put into other random soldier skills to continue working the soldier profile up in ranks. I didn't know you needed every skill except 1 maxed to get to rank 6, but I might be able to get it to rank 5 before the end of the game. Since I do not plan to use any other profiles on this playthrough, I don't care about raising those profile ranks at all. I agree, that a soldier doesn't need to be doing combos, but I think anyone would admit that having an effective way to handle both shields and armor is a good addition to any style of play. Incinerate and Overload do just that, and as icing on the cake each can be both a primer and detonator. Does that make more sense?

Sounds like a decent build, though pure Soldier has ways to take out shields and armor. Concussive Shot can be specced to destroy shields, and grenades can blow through armor. As a pure soldier, though armor and shields don't really affect me. They're just a different color health bar for my Revenant to melt through.

I am in love with my heat inducer valkyrie. Fire up Turbocharge before I start shooting, and I can practically melt an entire architect leg by myself without having to reload.
I never much cared for the revenant myself. I am more of a put every bullet I fire on target then a hold down button and spray the general vicinity of the bad guy. Of course, I have also never bothered to fully upgrade that weapon with all the proper mods. Does it get to the point where you actually hit with most of your shots?
