Open world is more Fallout 4 and Skyrim. MEA is just HUb based. Yeah. I wouldn't call MEA an 'open world game' and so I'm okay with Bioware doing similarly. But I definitely think they have ambitions in that direction. And if so, great. Cool. Yay. I just think that with both DAI and MEA, they've overstepped their ability. Thankfully at least in MEA, there is a recognition that hub-based focused design is an acceptable thing to keep around and we don't need to just trapeze around worlds doing relatively menial things (there are Tasks, but they're much more optional feeling this time, while rather more tied to a better narrative).

I actually think ME would be better going to something like Knights of the Old Republic to be honest, or more like the original Mass Effect, but with planets being more plot relevant.

I would take something between ME:A and ME1. I like driving around exploring, just have stuff for us to see. I also liked going in through enemy defense and storming bases like in ME1 and this game. The whole shuttle drops you off at the back door, you just walk inside, go through some corridors and get picked up again of ME2 just wasn't my thing.

I picked the more like ME 1 option. I can't say how many times I get lost in Andromeda because I suck at telling direction. Side quests take me hours.

ME1 build was definitely the best for ME. There was not even a one single moment when you could forgot about your main story, like in Andromeda.

Linear always gives me a confined feeling. I want to move freely to every spot I want (within map borders of course). I like the exploration feeling better than that "FPS on rails". For me ME:A is a step in the right direction. They have still work to do (like not one main populated center on the map, but several), but I like it more than the previous ME setup.

Pretty easy to know how this poll/thread will turn out. This forum is full of pc linear level/story lovers. Not to say that's bad. It's just the open world fans are few in numbers on here

When ME 2 and ME 3 went linear it benefit the series. Maybe a good compromise would be the ME 1 route where the main quest worlds were linear and the optional stuff was more open exploration. .....so basically MAss Effect Andromeda or did I play different game? I feel like so many people either didn't play the game or just decided to get lost in the optional side quests then decided it was bad even though the quests are optional. MEA is basically ME1's model but better. Besides the first part of Eos, MEA is basically just as linear as ME1. Everything else is optional

I just had some interesting thought, seeing someone writing about Expidition Vikings. This is how Andromeda should have been? I played Expedition Conquistador three times and more just to learn about all the different companions and their character. There are no loyalty missions, everything is based on your decisions during the many events while you travel. It is open world. You make tough choices. Later you get some hub you can build up. The writing is excellent for a mature audience. Factions that hate or support you, again depending on your decisions and you may not know the the immediate impact of your choice! Different endings.
Use that game, translate it into space rather than South America, wrap the Mass Effect Andromeda graphics/voice over around it and you have a worthy Mass Effect 4.

I like open world games, and MEA's is pretty good I guess (besides the grating fetch quests hidden under every rock that send you back and forth across the map). But to me, Mass Effect is more about the story and characters rather than open world exploration, and I'd rather it was a bit more linear with some elements of open world, just not how MEA did it, it's a bit too large in my opinion.

Definitions on the matter vary, but i am fine with all sorts of designs as long as developers do a good job. MEA compared to Inquisition had better activities and encouraged us to explore more but the restrictions were more in our face (don't leave mission area in 2017, long transitions) so for a 2017 game i expected more.

I kind of wonder if it would have helped to have a few more planets but with smaller maps instead of the four really big maps we got. Still big enough for the Nomad but not so big that you feel like you are on the same planet forever. I think that is one reason I liked Havarl (other than it's unique environment). It had plenty to do but it never felt overwhelming.

As much as I'd love for them to go back to linear storytelling, I know it's not going to happen. The best we can hope for is to convince them to go more toward an ME1 style with some open world elements separated from the main plot. Either that or then need to double the amount of story present in these massive open world games they're creating. Despite some of the problems inherent in MEA, I believe it to be a massive improvement to DAI.

Mostly linear. I don't like how prevalent open world games are now, and in most cases the story suffers for it. Exploration became kind of a wash in MEA anyway, someone had already been there.
