Friends, Romans, countrymen.
I was off exploring a shattered planet in the Andromeda galaxy today, in a six wheel drive, all terrain space vehicle, doing jumps when I encountered something that breaks immersion.
A robust, planet spanning exchange between PeeBee and Vetra had evolved into a tender moment in the back of the Nomad.
Purely platonic.
After arguing for three planets we had arrived at the point the girls would make up and admit they liked each other.
And then it happened....
Vetra: Quid pro quo, PeeBee?
PeeBee: Oh, I know, your sorry for jumping down my throat when I was saying sorry for jumping down your throat.
They went on to have a heart warming tender moment that brought a smile to my face, as it was almost loving.
But then I heard it again in my mind.....
Quid pro quo.....PeeBee?
And THAT was where I drew the line. I placed the controller on the floor and turned the game off, wandered over and placed the remote on the top of the television and turned it off manually.
How can an Asari understand latin? I asked myself.
And how does vetra even know latin when she has no real turian education to speak of (let alone a doctorate in obscure near dead human languages)? Why are they speaking to each other in ancient roman in space anyway Zip? Is this confirmation that Turians are space Romans?
Why is Bioware breaking my immersion with tender loving moments in the back of the Nomad?

It'd be really stupid if the translators couldn't use Latin phrases which are incorporated into ordinary conversational English.

In Henry VI Shakespeare uses Quid Pro Quo.
So, the elcor that did Hamlet obviously also did Henry VI, which is where Vetra and PeeBee picked it up.
Obviously.

The last time I played the game was when the 1.5 came out. I played for a few hours and it was much better with the patch but I was fighting and my two comrades were in front of me and suddenly an enemy appeared in front of me and my comrades ignored him as if he did not exist so I had to kill him without any help.
I would rather fight alone than have two complete idiots for my team. I will probably return to the game but at the moment I am playing Skyrim and having a great time.

Mass Effect has thrown out their "alien" aliens long time ago. From all of the ME universe, the most alien they got were Hanar, second best was Legion. Bronze medal goes to Thane's 2deep4u emotional flashbacks - and I'm not saying that they were good. They just felt properly alien.
All the other ME races are just human reskins. You never truly feel their alleged age (Asari/Krogan/Salarians never feel like they have non-human perspective on things due to their lifespans), outside of some facepaint there's little to none Asari/Turian culture developed too.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if writers never asked themselves a "would an Asari say that/would a Turian say that?" question while writing the lines. They speak lines with no passion behind them; I don't recall hearing any inherently Turian or Asari idioms or sayings, or even many not translatable words. Even Drack is "quads deep" in whatever he is in. There's no Krogan saying; just replacement of "balls" with "quads".
So yeah, I wouldn't loose my sleep over it, ME series didn't care about aliens feeling particularily alien for a long time. Let's say that Asari and Turian languages never developed any worthwhile phrases, so they use "ancient human languages" plugin. Or better yet, let's just say we never meet any actual aliens in ME, just cosplayers.

Why? *Clutches Ryncol* Turians probably have a saying for "something for something" as well. The most known human saying for this is "quid pro quo", so the translator translates it to that. You're being intentionally stupid and trolling, right? This stuff isn't hard to figure out.

Wow. Um. Wow.
Is THIS the level we've reached in trying to prove ME:A is a terrible game?
Quid pro quo is a common phrase in conversational English. If you have a problem with it being used in a game, I've got nothing for you. I'd say get some help, but that would be rude and trollish, so I'll refrain from such shenanigans.

Why do the translators in the original trilogy keep "Keelah Selai" or "Siha", when theyre supposed to translate everything?
It just works.
Just curious did anyone complain then?
Probably.

Thats a Quarian phrase being said by a Quarian. Why are Turians speaking Latin? The point is why doesnt it translate it, why does it keep "Keelah selai", Tali even has to explain it later that it translates "By the homeworld I hope to see one day", why does she have to do it when were already using TRANSLATORS? Or what about "boshtet" which means "bastard"? Or Geth or Rannoch, why doesnt it translate any of these? And why does the ramen bar owner on Citadel, why does he yell "Irasshaimase", why doesnt it translate it? It apparently just works. And id rather be fighting geth than "servants of the people". And i doubt turians are speaking latin, i mean they have latin sounding names and all, but thats what the translator translates it as, when she says something similar in turian, apparently. She is not speaking latin, the translator is. While were at it why does every race has names that can be easily pronounced in human language. I doubt krogans language would really have word "tuchanka" for instance, unless theyre species can produce vocals and pronounce words like humans, like parrots do. Reptiles tend to hiss, snarl and spit after all. If we were to hear krogan language without translators, it might sound like unintelligible dinosaur sounds, for instance. Just like our language to them without translators would probably sound like unintelligible mumbling. And its like this for all the races, even hanar. My guess is they dont have those words, its what the translators replaces them with, for the comfort of human brains. And for the comfort of US.

Meh. It's Latin but it's commonly used in English. Other Latin words we use in English are alias, P.S.(post script), and etc.(etctera). Would you have complained too if someone said alias?

Yes. But which language are we hearing on the translators? English or whichever language you play the game in. An Earth language. So of course, we would hear it through a language we understand. So while alias is more commonly used on earth, we would hear that word more often even if Pee Bee or Garrus or whovever used than moniker
