So, from the previews we saw and read (or at least some that i read), I got the impression that we were going to be able to choose what each outpost specialized in, say it be research outpost, military outpost or a manufacturing outpost or something like that.
Instead, we only get to choose what one outpost becomes on Eos... the rest are just, outposts...
I really would have enjoyed having this little feature be in the game, and say that each outpost would have a different bonus or something, like receiving periodic research points or receiving ammo powers/weapons. Not to mention having more of a presence in the game worlds. So we choose a military outpost, then have patrols appear and fight the kett or the outlaws/exiles here and there.
Also would have been great for Liam's mission. No matter what outpost specialization you choose, Braddock and crew still identify themselves as scientists... even if you choose for the outpost to be military. Just nitpicking really. It was a fun mission overall.
So those are my thoughts about the outposts. Anybody else thought about this?

What effect does the type of outpost have on the game? Is it just flavour?

Felt weird indeed, but I knew what I was dealing with right from the start. Addison will whine a little, some angara pretend to be concerned and that's it, nobody could actually let you decide the nature of colonization, too many variables to account. You send "message" and get "message" back.

Its just flavour and serves no bloody purpose. It determines the image of the initiative. Likely someone will bring it up later.

You send "message" and get "message" back. Damn shame it was cut out. It would have been a nice little flavor feature to be able to focus the direction each outpost would focus on. I mean really, they let us decide the focus of the first and most important outpost of the Initiative, but not for any others? Like you said, a simple message saying "i recommend we focus on military efforts here" would have done wonders.

I was under the impression, and of course they can change their minds but the next ME game may not even have any relations to Andromeda at all.

Or we might not even get a new ME game for a long time. This game hits a lot of Deus ex: MD vibe for me where a game and its reception ended up getting the deus ex franchise benched again.
Both games also have decent fun combat but story pacing being terrible. I personally will not be surprised if it meets the same fate. Now i hope that doesnt happen but atm im neutral so i wont be disappointed.

I was under the impression, and of course they can change their minds but the next ME game may not even have any relations to Andromeda at all. I guess, but we'd still have to deal with the greater Kett Empire and the Jaardan and w/e they were fighting that led to the creation of the Scrouge (also need to find a way to get rid of it!) These 2 seem a bit much just to be a 3-5 hour long DLC. We are only in the Heleus cluster after all, with the rest of the Andromeda Galaxy up for exploration and meeting a myriad of possible new races. So there is plenty more potential here. The rest I agree can be DLC.

It comes up in some background chatter between both squaddies and folks on the Nexus, but I don't see a gameplay related purpose.

I'd read a comment in an earlier thread stating that a militarized Eos will send more substantial military assistance for the end-game. I've only experienced the "scientific outpost" choice, so I can't confirm if this is so.

What effect does the type of outpost have on the game? Is it just flavour? I chose a military outpost. Lot of people didn't like it. Thought I was making some kind of police state. When questioned on it, I said it was for protection and safety from the Kett. Didn't intend or want to put fear into people. They were okay with that answer.

It's flavour, but at least there are throwaway mentions from various characters. Wish you could choose for additional outposts, but as non-major choices go I thought it was handled well enough. I think the main problem is that it's set-up as though it's going to be more of a major decision, so the fact that it ends up just being a third-tier one leads to disappointment.

I was surprised that I only get to choose what kind of outpost I'm gonna have this one time. Like all the other outposts are not important. It could get interesting, for example if you could make all of the outposts military then Angara would not trust you. But no, another decision with no consequences.

Its just flavour and serves no bloody purpose. It determines the image of the initiative. Likely someone will bring it up later. I made a military outpost in my second one and no one will shut up what a terrible idea it was because we look like conquerors. Also the side quest "earn your badge" may or may not be related to whether the first outpost in Military or Science because I only got this quest in my second playthrough

Agree, turned out to be quite underwhelming. I had the notion of making Eos a research base to remind people what the Initiative came all this way for, on the logic I could make the next one military based to improve Kett suppression.
The "feature" struck me as if it was cut from the rest of the outposts for money & time. So it ends up being half-baked and forgotten about as a result. (Sadly a lot like some other aspects of the game.)
