I'm not sure I care. It's divorced from anything of the other Mass Effects. Which I would say was a mix of paying tribute to old space race shit (mostly Americans/Russians), and on the other hand, paying tribute to concepts of galactic unity via Asari.

The latter turned out to be utter bullshit and the former means nothing anymore.

One wonders how binary would work as a spoken language? Are we to wait while one recites numerous ones and zeros?

It's mentioned a few times that there are multilingual people and it's probably pretty likely that many people in the galaxy who don't need a translator (or wouldn't use one, for a variety of reasons) just use their knowledge of multiple languages.

The downside of a universal translator is that it'd be very easy to corrupt and mess with through malicious efforts, breaking communication.

My guess is that the galaxy's lingua franca (if we assume every other species has one major language) is probably Asari, maybe Turian or Volus. In Terminus space it'd probably be Batarian.
