Ever heard of "fanservice"? Well, it's not only for straight males. This. It's pretty much the Mass Effect equivalent of the volleyball scene in Top Gun. The scene exists for people who find Jaal or Liam attractive to swoon over, and has no other reason for being. Unlike some here I don't mind that sort of fanservice, no matter who it is directed at, so long as the devs don't go overboard with it. But let's call a spade a spade.

Luke Kristjanson is the oldest writer at BioWare and he always writes characters that talk weird but since DA:I when he wrote Sera he's been writing characters that are barely comprehensible and even his colleagues say he's crazy. Then what the heck is he still writing for a major game then? I applaud Bioware if they are just keeping him around until retirement but for everyone's sake don't let him near a game. It's not bad enough we have to deal with Mr. Walters but some guy even people at Bioware thinks is crazy. Siggggggghhhhhhh how far Bioware has fallen.

Maybe they are scared to tell him he's fired in case he turns round and shanks them then rides their body like the 3:30 at Chepstow. So they probably just think fuck it we'll just assign him the black character or the autistic elf, nobody cares about them when he ruins them.

Unlike some here I don't mind that sort of fanservice, no matter who it is directed at, so long as the devs don't go overboard with it. But let's call a spade a spade. And I would've forgiven the ridiculousness of their fan service had the game been mind blowingly incredible. Fan service is fine, but it needs to be surrounded by a worthwhile product. I'm hormonal... I get aroused. Sure. But don't hand me a shit sandwich and sell me on eating it with promises of titillation. That's so insulting. Quite a lot of straight guys felt this level of insult when they saw Cindy in FFXV. She's supposed to be a mechanic, huh? REALLY now? And the FFXV dev thought players were dumb enough to believe his statement on Cindy: "She's not meant to be an erotic character - just outgoing." Is that guy for real? And why throw such distracting, in your face fan service at players? It's so suspicious - like... are they compensating for something lacking in the game? CD Projekt Red can fan service everyone until the cows come home. Everything in TW3 was a worthwhile product, I thought. And they had some pretty ridiculous outfits for female characters in that game. But it was a great game.

Hahaha, I also didn't quite get what the hell Liam was doing during that scene. I don't dislike Liam or anything but damn, he's terrible at explaining his actions. Never to the point and always talking about vague ideals and hope. Most of the time I'm like 'whatever man I don't really understand what you're trying to get to here anyway but just do your job pls'. Just like his day off proposal in Aya. I thought we would go for a drink but the next thing I know I'm scanning a random store and we have to get out of here because 'they' are going to be mad. Liam's a strange fella indeed. Agree. With Liam I always have a feeling that I am either missed a couple of dialogs, or those dialogs were cut out. On the other hand, it might be the best attempt of Kristiansson to create that "interesting normal guy" of his out of 3 he already made (Kaidan, Jacob, Liam).

With Liam I am always have a feeling that I am either missed a couple of dialogs, or those dialogs were cut out. I think this is spot on. Liam keeps on blabbing about HUSTL in my campaign but I (and I acknowledge that this is probably my fault because it can't be that he didn't explain it at all) have completely missed his explanation about what HUSTL actually is. I have come up with what it should closely resemble thanks to other tidbits of information he gave me but the fact that I couldn't find a short to the point explanation still makes me feel awkward when talking with him. The lack of these to the point explanations is what defines him for me, hence this particular example. In fact, like I've said in my first post, I have a hard time filtering important stuff out of his random nonsense at all, which makes it quite a challenge to properly understand his plans and ideas. Everything Liam does seems to be a puzzle needing to be solved before you can even think about a next step. The fact that another one of his 'gimmicks' is to keep secrets from the pathfinder also doesn't help. I think that these two things combined are the primary reasons why he comes over as vague. Not to say that he isn't an interesting character because I like conversing with him but I'm not really sure if it fits his background and position within the team. To me it seems like a cop/crisis response member would need to have a cool head, not scrambled brains. But that is just my two cents on the issue.

I believe it was just random fucking fan service for hetero females like myself. It pissed me off because it felt like BioWare was treating me like some drooling idiot. ( This is how some hetero males feel about in-their-face fan service via large breasts, asses, and the like. It insults one's intelligence.) I don't care how many animated asses they throw at me - their game was still unpolished and underwhelming. Pretty much describes the Cora and Peebee sex scenes.

I got what Liam was going for - there are things that are ok to insult and poke fun of and it's all in good humor and it's a bonding exorcise. Then there are things are over the line and touching those particular nerves is going too far. Figuring out where those lines are for two cultures that have never encountered each other before would be an important exorcise to make sure neither offends the other by doing the latter when they're trying to do the former. If anything I was actually disappointed that there couldn't be a more understanding, supportive option.
That being said.
I do think that Liam is a poor communicator. Too many idioms. Doesn't fill in enough blanks. I also don't quite understand the mentality of trading armor for answers instead of just sitting down and talking about it beyond maybe just giving them something to do while they have the conversation and then as an excuse to get Jaal naked because apparently the angara have fewer taboos about walking around naked.

Most men actually appreciate superficial fan service, or gaming wouldn't be flooded with scantily clad voluptuous females. If gay men had a sizable influence on the gaming industry, it wouldn't be much different either with scantily clad muscular men.

Ok, I may be an oddity.
But I got the point of the whole thing fairly quickly. When switching units in the military, there are sometimes traditions and ways of behaving in certain situations that aren't apparently obvious. One thing I learned was to find one of the guys that had been around a while and start kinda talking shit about different things, learning the ropes so to speak. Once Liam started telling me that they were figuring out how to talk shit to each other, it all just made complete sense.

Pretty much describes the Cora and Peebee sex scenes. That bad? It depends on what you consider bad. They are fairly similar to love scenes you might see in an HBO or Showtime television series. There is brief nudity.

The scene has great potential to flash out Liam's character, but in the end I was just confused as hell and probably for the first time in my video game history, the character I was playing as has more clue of what's going on than I have. At least Ryder knows that Liam is talking about while I was just sitting there scratching my head.

Dunno what it is but it's like Bioware gets worse at designing male bodies with each game. Remember how defined the bodies looked in ME3? Then we went to the ken dolls and molerat nipples of Inquistion to 16 year olds with weirdly proportioned arms. Someone in the thread already explained how I feel whenever Liam speaks "Not sure what you're getting at but ok just do your job". Ha, and to think we used to think that Sera made no sense. Liam makes Sera look like a poet.

I thought the ending of the scene was a nod to Firefly, where Mal stretches and boards Serenity naked. Jaal's shot looked very similar in body language and tone.

Just read through all three pages of this thread. Thank you everyone for your comments. I do think it is odd that Turians and Krogans never take off their armor. I made another topic couple weeks ago complaining about the crappy modeling done by Bioware. I know plenty of Amateurs who could make better looking models if EA allowed mods.
