Simple question. Can you NG+ with a different gender? I started with female Ryder and now I want to switch to male Ryder. Is it possible?

Yes.
It is also advisable to respec your character if you intend to do so before NG+ or you'll be stuck with the same build until u get Tempest.

Oh, also, does the male default animate well enough or should I make a custom one?

Yes. It is also advisable to respec your character if you intend to do so before NG+ or you'll be stuck with the same build until u get Tempest. When doing that, the player won't have the remnant vi power anymore. No big deal, just wanted to mention that When gaining control of Ryder, once on hab 7, the player can switch powers and profile. I did that. The only thing is the player can't access inventory until he/she gets the tempest.

I did that. The only thing is the player can't access inventory until he/she gets the tempest. I wondered about Remnant VI, based upon companions' skills. For those who do not know, unspecced companion skills will have the Tier 6 option locked out until the Loyalty Mission is complete. If the skills are fully specced, they remain unlocked. Starting the NG+ at Level 72, I had four very different Favorites ready to load. I switched to a "new" build as soon as boots touched Habitat 7. (One with Remnant VI, coincidentally.) The inventory issue was annoying, until they upped the starting value to 100 items. (It has glitched back to 50 for me, once.) Since I'd planned for the lower cap, I had a lot of free space. One hundred items is a threshold with which I'll likely never have trouble. I've yet to invest in the Inventory Capacity perk during my NG+. One minor thing that kind of annoys with NG+ is the armor coloring. I have to go into my wardrobe and return my armor colors to "basic", more or less, before importing. If you don't, you end up with some ugly, crazily colored AI armor. It seems like it would've been easier to just let me start the game with the NG+ armors I already own. We should've been able to visit the loadout screen aboard Hyperion, rather than simply grabbing a helmet and a single sidearm. Even if our loadout were restricted to the Predator I in a NG, at least we'd have been introduced to the mechanic. Then, for NG+, we could've equipped the stuff we want to equip before reaching the Nexus.

I never thought about selling all the stuff at the end of my previous playthrough. Now that its up to 100, its ok. I had no problems with the colors. Ryder would have the same color for his/her casual wear as I had at the end of my previous playthrough. The same with the armor. Even the armor I wore at the beginning of the game matched the color scheme I had for the armor I wore for my previous playthrough That didn't bother me too much

Actually what I intended to say is, you can use the med-bay respec to get all your skill points unallocated before NG+ save. That way, you can carry your skill points over to the NG+ and allocate skills when you are in Habitat 7. Not sure about Remnant VI... didnt pay attention cos I never use it

Often, it ends up being Zap and me in tough fights, as the others love their dirt naps. I didn't have too much trouble with companions taking a dive until I passed Level 90. Now, they just can't survive against heavy-hitting enemies. Thankfully, Zap is pretty durable, and gets to cloak and respawn. It's my most useful companion, in combat.

Oh, also, does the male default animate well enough or should I make a custom one? I just saw this question, and I'm also curious. He looked like a goon before the patch. He was always squinting, his eyes darting, and his eyebrows jumping about. I'm curious as to whether this stuff was addressed. If so, I'll give him another shot.

So... no takers? I just don't want to have a creepy Ryder staring at things. There is definitely improvement to both Ryders after patch 1.05. Honestly, I think the CC sux and custom male Ryders shares all the funny animation with the default ones. Since I have my helmet on all the time; well whenever possible at least, "Animation" aint bad.
