Voice chat: My "speaker" icon comes on after I've been speaking for a sec, switches off early

Is this a problem with the VOIP, the UI, or my shitty Razer mic? I start talking, then after a second or so my speaker icon activates, letting everyone know I am talking. Then it goes away after a few seconds, even if I'm still talking. I have it on push-to-talk, and I'm on PC.
I would ask others in the game what's going on, but if people have mics, hardly anyone uses them even to answer direct questions.
