I searched the web for the answer above, but people tend to only compare guns within their category, which is pointless now that we can carry 4 shotguns if we want to.
I play a vanguard/infiltrator hybrid (switching between black widow/tactical cloak and asari sword/charge). Hardcore difficulty Level 35. I need some backup weapon with high rate of fire to effortlessly finish off pre-weakened enemies not worthy of the lenghty charge/sword animation (no gatling spinup!!!). I also need it for enemies like the kett bosses with their orb and other melee insta-sync-killers, who are to dangerous to fight in melee. I don't like slow firing weapons like the Dhan, I just miss too often to make the shots count enough.
Candidates: Equalizer SMG: great for unlimited ammo, but it just stops doing any damage midrange and further away P.A.W. AR: currently trying it with bio-converter, which might have been a clumsy combination. Great precision, a bit too low damage up close Piranha Shotgun: seems to be amazing with plasma seeking aug, but I haven't tried it personally yet Revenant AR: not tried yet, seems to have a midrange problem just like the equalizer, though. Does plasma seeking help? Hurricane SMG: used it to great effect on lower levels, thinking about using vintage heat sink to make it a better equalizer
Other suggestions?

Just Hurricane it man seriously both plays so far and kicking a third into gear.
Mid range fighter style.
Charge - Bastion Rem.VI - Cover jumping Biotic Shield - * o bugger * button + Anti cover knock
Weapons Modified Hurricane X - still a beast in the 90s. Modified Black Widow X - Just for those pesky ones. Modified Scattershot X - Because i love this shotgun.😂
Armor - Modified Rem set - all towards damage resistance and tank like build.

Tried the Piranha, but made a bad mistake - I put a vintage heat sink on it and forgot it reduces the magazine by half... This game really lacks proper tooltips!

Easy one: Piranha with Bio Converter and Seeking Plasma. In essence, for single player this is really all you need.

I have not used a seeking plasma augment yet. Does it make all the pellets from a shotgun hit? I tried the regular plasma augment, but it seemed to me that there was a delay between firing the gun, and the plasma hitting the target, unlike with regular bullets.

I would use the N7 Piranha and do in fact. The N7 Hurricane is an excellent sidearm but can not compare to the stopping power of the N7 Piranha. I have not used the Plasma Seeking or Bio Converter mods on it yet myself but a crafted one with Kinetic mods is enough to make it shred enemies. Hit Turbocharge and Tactical Cloak and fire away!

Yes, assuming none hit cover (yours or theirs). Works well. I do use the vintage heat sink, and while it does need to go into cooldown often, it recharges quickly and I haven't found it to be a problem on insanity.

I'm a lower end player, and I had gotten through most of the game up to elaaden with nothing but my Black Widow and Valkyrie. Had extra research and made a Piranha to try it out. Totally different playstyle required from my normal hang back and snipe things down. Fun, tho. I can almost see how playing a Vanguard would be enjoyable.

I tried the heat seeking aug in the Dhan and find the projectile unreliable and extremely slow. Does it work better on the piranha?

I used a siper rifle for distance, and when things like fiends or destroyers started closing, i used the hurricane with seeking plasma, modded to add clip size and damage, and incediary ammo. I could empty the clip blind from behind cover and chew through their armor pretty fast.

I don't understand how Bio-Converter even made it into the game. It's both illogical and game-breaking. I won't say it should be removed, as I'm sure some enjoy it. It holds zero appeal for me, though. I can't foresee ever using it.
