Obviously this is a question which has been asked before, and one that everyone has an opinion on. I would ask, in considering this, to exclude ME3's Multiplayer mode here, as that aspect of ME3 has in many ways grown into its own game with its own community (ME3 MP pros AKA BSNers, feel free to correct me); MP is such a deep game and so different than the gameplay experiences of ME1 and ME2 (and even ME3 in many ways) that to me it doesn't make sense to include it when comparing the three games from a story, character, and gameplay perspective. ME3's basic combat system, which underpins Multiplayer, of course must be considered. Vote away! If you want my totally self-indulgent thoughts, see below: Anyway, here's how I would rate the games using a really frickin' creative one to five scale (five is high):
ME1:
Story: 5 Gameplay: 3 Characters: 4 Graphics: 3 Replay Value: 3 Soundtrack: 4
ME1 hooked everyone on the series through its immersive, meticulously detailed sci-fi universe. It generates the feeling that you are really questing though an immeasurably vast, beautiful, unexplored, and hostile universe. Simmering in the background is the unknown threat of Saren's plot; from Virmire it suddenly becomes horrifyingly real that you are trying to prevent the destruction of all life by a race of unspeakably powerful evil godlike mechanical beings, an endgame that culminates in the battle in vacuum on the Council tower with Sovereign himself looming over you. Add the chance to get to know Wrex, Liara, and Garrus and their respective races, the gut-wrenching Virmire decision, a wonderfully tailored sci-fi-intense soundtrack by Jack Wall and Sam Hulick, and a first-class villain in Saren, and you have a winner. The Mako/uncharted worlds gameplay did get old after a while, but you could skip most of this and driving around on a gorgeous uninhabited planet with a toxic atmosphere while moons and stars whirl above you creates a depth to this game that its sequels simply did not have.
ME2:
Story: 3 Gameplay: 4 Characters: 5 Graphics: 4 Replay Value: 4 Soundtrack: 5
I'm not sure if anyone knows exactly what happened to ME2's writers during the development of this game. Everyone knows Drew Karpyshyn left Bioware and did not write all of the story for this one, but I suspect the whole "Shepard dies and gets reincarnated by and works for Cerberus" plot wasn't his doing. As for the Collectors, they are, at least at face value, a creepy and unnatural enemy and Jack Wall's soundtrack, with its discordant piano keys, reinforces this. However, I wonder if they weren't some random foes that some EA suit had sitting around in a bargain bin and said, "OK new Bioware lackeys, here are your bad guys." I found Harbinger to be a scary enemy back before I learned to beat the game on Insanity; now he's just a troll. Regardless, I was taken aback by this game jettisoning most of ME1's plot and half its characters and consider this to be a serious mistake. So why do I rate this game so highly? Because the character development, especially for Jack, Mordin, and Garrus is all top-notch, Omega and Illium are beautifully immersive, the combat system is excellent, and there is a great variety of options for future playthroughs. LOTSB and Overlord are great add-ons, and even Zaeed and Kasumi, while limited in their actions with Shepard (no Kasumi romance, eh Biovar?), are great additions to the team. The Suicide Mission, while overhyped, feels tremendously epic and Jack Wall turns out a heck of a great theme to accompany it. While I find ME1's endgame a bit more epic, because you can lose the entire team on the suicide mission, it feels more personal and the stakes feel higher. I miss the Mako and uncharted worlds missions, but there are enough N7 missions to mercenary bases and rescue missions on many different planets that are thankfully far more varied than those of ME1's "generic dungeons." So while ME2's story stumbles drunkenly out of the pub, and nobody likes Cerberus or resource mining, the side missions, characters, replay value and combat system save the day and help ME2 excel.
ME3:
Story: 2 Gameplay: 5 Characters: 3 Graphics: 5 Replay Value: 3 Soundtrack: 2
Here is the X-Men: The Last Stand to ME1/ME2's X1/X2. More bombastic, higher stakes, more bad guys, more weapons, more drama!!!!!!! See? the Reapers don't need no stinkin' Citadel relay or Alpha Relay! Nope, they could have shown up anytime they felt like it! So the Rippahs show up and start murdering the galaxy by millions per day and Shepard is sent on FedEx quests while everyone dies. The Illusive Man becomes a full-fledged bad guy, summons colossal armies and fleets out of his ass, and proceeds to attack everyone and everything, but mostly you. Good thing Biovar got the combat down, because you'll be doing a lot of it. ME transitions fully to the third person shooter world with even more diverse guns to 'splode heads with as well as an invaluable dodge using the Awesome button. The graphics are another treat, especially the scenes of the Reaper assaults on Menae and Thessia. Liked your teammates from ME2? Too bad, they're NPCs except for good ol' reliable Garrus and Tali. Some FNGs like James replace them, although James, your de facto Krogan, does manage to grow as a character. The Virmire Survivor does not fare so well; Kaidan mostly bemoans the state of the universe while Ashley is too busy having her character ruined to do anything important like emote or communicate with her LI (if you're romancing her). The best character in the game is Javik, whom you have to buy, although he's admittedly worth it. If you are a Liara fanboy your experience will be greatly improved if you only romance her during every playthrough lest you discover how weak everyone else's character development is. There are some scenes with genuine drama, although most are surrounded by such nonsensical plot circumstances that you can't engage your brain too much. EA gave a suitcase full of cash to Clint Mansell to write a mopey soundtrack, you are ceaselessly made to care about Some Kid no matter how Renegade Chaotic Evil Shep you may be, and Biovar managed to magic up an ending that satisfied nobody and made KOTOR 2's look positively Spielbergesque. Also, Kai Leng.
With a few tweaks, ME3 could have been a gaming masterpiece as a stand alone title. As a successor to the groundbreaking ME1, it can't be anything more than a letdown.
And here is my overall Ranking, regardless of score: ME1: 2nd ME2: 1st ME3: 3rd

ME1, while not the best 'game' of the three, was the best Mass Effect, and my favourite, if you know what I mean.
1) ME1 1.5) MP 2) ME2 3) ME3
Sometimes I want to play ME3 SP with all the weapons I've discovered through Multiplayer, but on the other hand, I don't, because I don't like ME3's storyline and I would have to pay for DLC that I'd never use ever again.

Mass Effect 2 is among my top four favorite video games of all time. The only bad thing was the cover system was a bit clunky especially in regards to how Mass Effect 3 did it, hence ME 3 had the better over all gunplay. But its RPG elements were deeper, richer of the 3, its story was solid...if not spectacular, but the focus on your amazing squad of characters which all culimated in one final battle where anyone could die and your decisions mattered naturally and organically and flowed with what you were doing the entire game, was impressive.
ME 1 had the best story and probably the best antagonist of the series but it suffered from really piss poor MAKO and shooter mechanics. I mean it was downright horrible sometimes. And a clunky ass inventory system.

I actually think that the third one with all DLC's was the best for me. If you turn your brain off during ending bits and focus on good parts and the Citadel DLC, it's actually really fun and full game.

ME2>ME1>>ME3
Despite having a weak main story, I enjoyed ME2 the most. It seemed the most polished of the trilogy and it ended in a rather satisfying way. ME1 is second.. while the gameplay was clunky and I dreaded the consoley inventory fuss, it was a great introduction into the franchise and let us discover an exciting new setting. ME3... maybe I expected too much, but I didn't like the endings, found it weird that Cerberus was apparently a threat on par with the reapers, and the lazy quest log annoyed me. It made the trilogy go out with the farting sound of a released balloon. Pity.

Overall: 1) Mass Effect 2 2) Mass Effect 3 multiplayer 2) Mass Effect 1 3) Mass Effect 3 single player
Gameplay: 1) Mass Effect 2 2) Mass Effect 3 multiplayer 3) Mass Effect 3 single player 4) Mass Effect 1
Story (plot, setting/atmosphere, characters) 1) Mass Effect 1 2) Mass Effect 2 3) Mass Effect 3 Not ranked: Mass Effect 3 multiplayer
I adore Mass Effect 2. It has its flaws, but I gleefully overlook them when I play the game. It is the game I enjoy playing the most. I love the gameplay the most of the three games, particularly on Insanity.
Mass Effect 1 can be a bit of slog for me since I mostly play for gameplay at this point. But i still find it enjoyable for what it is.
Mass Effect 3 gameplay has some good ideas, but ultimately I think they are half-baked. Some of the mechanics work well in multiplayer, but most of the joy of multiplayer is in playing with other players, and you can overlook most of the flaws.

I have to say for me it's ME3 -> ME1 -> ME2...
I actually found ME2 so lack-luster that I quit playing the series altogether even though my brother bought me ME3 when it came out, I've never gotten around to playing until just these last few weeks. I have to say, I'm loving it. Easily the best of the series.
The only good thing about ME2 is giving you some emotional attachment to some of the characters, and then it having some impact as some of them die in ME3.

I'm not going to vote because I'm currently near the end of an ME1 replay, so that's the game that's freshest in my mind, and ME2 is the least fresh in my mind, I haven't played it since 2014. I don't think I can vote impartially without completing the replay of the trilogy.
My instinct, however, is to rank ME3 first, followed by ME2, then ME1.

I recently finished playing Mass Effect trilogy for the first time (I know I'm late lol) and I must say I loved Mass Effect 2 more than others. Mass Effect 1 has a good story but I didn't like gameplay much. MAKO was slow and boring, elevators killed me while I waited forever. Cover system wasn't really good but story was great for introduction. Mass Effect 2 was a different story and I liked it. Working with a group you see as terrorist formerly was interesting for me. What I didn't like about Mass Effect 2 was disappearance of inventory system. I liked outfitting squad members myself and I was disappointed to see that "choose loadout" thingy. I know some people don't like inventory system but I like it. Mass Effect 3 was decent enough. I especially loved cover system. Deaths of some characters really made me cry which was a new thing for me in the trilogy. I liked weapon system more than ME 2. So I choose ME 2 as my favourite one and maybe ME 3 as my second one.

For me: ME3 -> ME1/ME2 I used to rank ME2 the lowest, but I can't deny the fun I'm having with the combat and some of the characters. ME1 has the better story, but ever since I don't do all the ME2 side missions anymore ME2 is on the same level. I don't know what it is with ME2 for me, it's a great game, and I enjoy it, but I just really found it boring to go through all the side missions. I guess the reason why I feel this way is that there are too many of those, in addition to the (for my tastes) way too big roster that already tests my patience sometimes with all the Recruitment and Loyalty Missions. It must sound strange because I said I love the combat, yet it can also get very tedious at the same time. ME3 for me has the best story, best characters+banter, best setting, best soundtrack, best DLCs, and best combat (though I prefer some weapons in ME2, like the Viper). I'm one of the few who even liked the ending. And while the game certainly has flaws and moments of great stupidity (though to be fair, all 3 have those), the overall experience to see my choices play out was among the best in my time playing videogames. I also really liked that dark, desperate tone and the character interaction, not only between Shepard and the squadmates, but between the squadmates too. They all felt a lot more alive to me. I'd have loved to see what they could've done with ME3 if they had more time. Whenever I start a new Shepard (which happens pretty much right away after finishing one for the past two years ) I look forward to start with ME1 every time, even though early on it can be tedious (I play on Insanity) and the gameplay is not my favourite out of the 3 I'm also not a big fan of the masked varying dialogue choices, because a lot of those say the same, but I really love this game as well. Virmire, Noveria and Ilos are some of my favourite sections and the first visit to the Citadel is absolutely amazing every time. Overall, I love to play the complete trilogy over and over, and while each game has its flaws, it's my favourite videogame experience ever. Mass Effect taught me to not always be a goody two shoes and make different choices on each of my runs. The replay value of these 3 games is insane

I like all 3 games, but for different reason ME1: It has the best story and it is the one that created my interest for the trilogy. It is the one that has the deepest lore explanation. (May be because it is the first ) ME2: It is the one that has the best companions (in my opinion), and I like the "outlaw" vibe when the council can't officially support me. (I try to see it as they give me an undercover assignment to se what Cerberus is doing.) ME3: The only thing that is better then the other two is the game play mechanics? I think you would say. As I most play as Vanguard it made it so FUN. The rest was passing. As I never played ME3MP I have no opinion on it. But if I have would choose one game it would be ME2, I play Mass Effect for the RP and fun and interesting characters is highest on the list. So I hope ME:A has the story quality of ME1, the character of ME2 and the game mechanics of ME3 (hopefully even more improved)

So I hope ME:A has the story quality of ME1, the character of ME2 and the game mechanics of ME3 (hopefully even more improved) That sounds right about on the money

Mass Effect 2. King of games, a pinnacle of the game industry. Mass Effect 2 should've been #1 there-- now and forever. Made by God himself and handed down to some Canadian nerdy devs.

Well, I like ME1 and 3 both, but ME3 had more negatives than ME1: autodialogue, most boring crew of the three games, too much emphasis on DLC content, MP that you're forced to play to get a good ending, the game telling us how Shep thinks and feels instead of giving the player the option to decide that, being forced to side with the Alliance and not being able to side with Cerberus instead, etc.

1. ME2 I really enjoyed recruiting the companions and the suicide mission. They improved the combat a lot over ME1. The story was a bit out there but it worked. Planet scanning was a horrible waste of time and the mini games got old fast. No Mako was a plus.
2. ME1 Close second to ME2. This was the truest RPG. The story and villain were the best of the series. Combat had some issues and was improved greatly in the subsequent games. The Mako is almost enough to make me dislike the game but I suffer through that because the rest is quite good. I liked the tough choices.
3. ME3 By far my least favorite. The ending fiasco plays a large role in that. Side quests were a joke. The combat was probably the best and the multiplayer was surprisingly fun. Too much auto dialogue.
