I have read online that this is pretty common, wondering if many here have had it and if there is any way to get rid of it? I think it's tied to a Nomad upgrade.
And what's with being told I have new email ALL THE TIME! When I don't even have any new emails. Sam keeps trolling me on the Tempest.

Yep, '!' seems to appear after you buy/craft Nomad upgrade and since those are invisible in your inventory, you can't uncheck them and they appear as new all the time. It's not the only '!' that stays. Some codex entires, journal entries and on later levels squadmates skill points also leave '!'.
As of now I don't think there's a way to get rid of it.
