I have started this thread because clearly BW pays attention to what we say and adapts to it with each game. Kudos to them for that. Sadly, it sometimes seems it might sometime cause them to neglect things that we liked or did not complain about. And while they focus on trying to make a game people like and give them what they want, some of the more important feeling things like good animations, great story, great characters, great music - it all goes away. It's like they hear the cacophony of complaints and get lost within those complaints and as they try to navigate through them, they lose sight on the one true north they always had. Great story. Great chraracters. Not just a great story in theory on paper because the outline of it looks good, but the whole sum delivery of it and each aspect of it within the game is well done, immersive and enjoyable.
So after this game they will take what we say and course correct yet again. But in an effort to help guide them, because I am thoroughly convinced that they really do want to give us the game we want, I think we need to give them clarity about what we specifically like and don't like.
Here's my list:
Good:
- Nomad. As is works great. Put a weapon on it and I will love it even more. Well done.
- Jet Pack. One of the best adds to the game. KEEP
- Combat (build your own style rather than class locked) - for the love of a shining sun DO NOT CHANGE THIS! It's great now. Favorites could use some more explaining as to how to set it up but it is a nice system that makes gameplay fun and flexible. KEEP. KEEP. KEEP. Well done!
- Some open world maps to explore. - This was not bad despite criticisms. They just need to be more variety within them and more interesting things to do along with more points of interest. More to do on maps would be more interesting too but not fetch quests because only sadists like them.
- Planet quests relevant to viability: Overall they were enjoyable. Slone being a flat out criminal was uninspired but generally they showed you what was happening on the world which was enjoyable.
Fix:
- CC: Please give us a wide variety of heads, give us lots of skin shades from pale to dark and all we can have in between. More ability to change features than we have now as well. More hair choices because everyone needs more hair choices. It's one of the first mods you see when mods come out for most games. That is because it is important to players.
- Animations: please improve them at least to MET level.
- If I am going to have to visit a planet multiple times and even hop from planet to planet, please be creative and find a faster way to do this with less load screens than we currently have to suffer through now. I do not care what space magic you have to discover from some ancient tech in some dark hole and the edge of the galaxy in order to make this happen and sound relatively plausible. Just please, make it happen.
- Choices. Give some solid choices. They give you a reason to go back and play again. Really. They do. Not just choosing between Krogan I never met or heard of and a Salarian Pathfinder I met for two minutes, but really important seeming decisions. Yeah, I know people will whine that choices don't matter, but sometimes they do in relevant ways for the story, like who lives and who dies, who becomes the leader of the krogan as they rise to power. More decisions that feel like they are decisions please. Even if the outcome didn't really change vastly, it really does help to shape your character. We don't really need paragon/renegade for this though adding it back in might be good. Just don't link it to if you get to save someone like ME2. Maybe put points into it to create new dialogue options or build into it each renegade/paragon choice you make like ME2 where that gives you more options. Maybe even have one that is morally grey at times.
- Quest markers: If one quest has five locations, lighting up all five only creates confusion and driving in circles. Different color markers maybe or just one of all five being highlighted would be better.
- Squad control: Letting me have access to their powers would be nice. Also liked it when they had more powers like in ME1. ME2 was a joke with only two powers for each squaddie. I liked that I could focus my team on one or specific threats on the field before. Now, it's a mess with them running around everywhere and me having no degree of control over the situation at all.
- Quests: Please don't give me twelve stages to a squaddie quest where I have to go to three different planets at three different times then check emails another four times for it to update. Tis much easier to throw said squaddie out the airlock especially when they aren't particularly interesting to begin with. ME2 was actually more fun for me. Learn what it is. It's important to them and learn why. They do it and get it done. None of this nagging me to keep doing more for them.
- Mail, conference calls: In ME3 we could talk to Hackett in flight to a mission. That was great. Let's get that option back. Let's also be able to access mail from the omni tool so we don't have to keep going back to the ship for updates.
- Last but in now way least, Story. We really need to sit down and have a talk about this:
The Archon: He had no depth. No character. He was a one note cartoon villain. Compare him to Saren or Illusive man and tell me what you see? Not much. Uninspired. No complexity to him at all. Let's not do this again please.
Kett: We get two new species and only one is fleshed out. The other we get a couple of details about and the rest is still a mystery by the end of the game. How does that happen? Was this a direct choice? Are you doing this go keep us coming back for more? Because that only works in TV shows where you get new episodes weekly. Here? Not so much. Why did we not learn more about them in this game? They are everywhere. We infiltrate bases. We infiltrate ships. And we learn nothing. Nada. That is not a good plan. It is the second of three new species. We should have learned a lot more about them since the third essentially unknown.
Crew: Please flesh out our characters more. They lack complexity which makes them dull. Perhaps moving toward conversation that is more like DAO would help flesh them out more and make them more interesting. We learned a great deal about our characters there and as a result they were far more interesting. DA2 got that right too IIRC. ME2 did well with it. ME1 as well. DAO/DA2 probably was the best IMHO.
Music: Where oh where art thou? Seriously. Where? Please go back to ME1 and ME2 and listen to the game. Beautifully scored. Each mission in ME2 has its own music. Finally mission? Great score. MEA is way too quiet except for SAM who never shuts up. Please make him quiet and add music. Thank you.
SAM: More like Edi, less like the nagging voice in my head that serves as a thermometer, a mining tool, and a general interruption for even his own comments.
Final Battle: Please don't make the final battle one I have already done within the game. Please allow me to actually fight the villain at some point in this battle. Perhaps even interrogate them a little like I could with Saren and Illusive Man to a lesser degree. And yeah, maybe persuade them to some degree using those paragon/renegade options. Give me that option to use that to gather information or try to steer them to another path.
