I read this article and stumbled a lot over the WTF idea of a science article sponsored by Bethesda (for Prey) or any software company or even politics. It's bothersome. At what point does such an article stop being science and shift to advertising/marketing or outright manipulation? In this case, it isn't and it's a remarkably short article that I would have liked more examples. I thought about how such an article might have been 'sponsored' by EA for Andromeda as a way of explaining space magic or dark energy etc. www.sciencealert.com/an-astrophysicist-reveals-what-sci-fi-gets-wrong-and-right-about-science

One of the science fakes that happens to be my pet peeve is the "humans only use 10% of their brain" myth. Drives me nuts every time I hear it.

My local newspaper has been running "advertorials" for different things over the last couple of years and some of them have been next to impossible to detect any difference between them and a true news story. At least that article at the start has a noticeable line of text saying it was sponsored. The ones I have seen in my newspaper were using a four or five point font and all it was disguising was "Ad" so good luck finding that.

I like those kinds of articles. Bringing hard science to video games can't hurt, though I don't want developers to drop the sci-fi part either. I love sci-fi. It's been an integral part of my life since I was a kid and the stories built around it can be just as amazing as the ingenuity in creating new technology to build that story around.

I actually liked Lucy, and I liked the Stargate tv series (that does the same thing). It still makes me yell every time they get to those parts, though. There is the the 90's emo movie called "Powder". Pretty sure it was all about the 10% brain thing too... Also...in regards to thread topic, I just wanted to point out that scientists are increasingly trying to reach out to folks. When we develop proposals for funding, it is super important to have an innovative and meaty "Broader Impacts" section to detail creative ways to make our research more accessible to the public. Some people have really amazing ideas about this (I personally suck at it, and my stuff has been mostly working with local communities to create interactive displays and educational materials). But think how many more people you could get interested in science by integrating movies and video games into outreach? This may be something along those lines...

One of the science fakes that happens to be my pet peeve is the "humans only use 10% of their brain" myth. Drives me nuts every time I hear it. The way I understand it, we only use 10 percent of our brains at any given moment, but are able to use 100 percent of the areas. Ugh. Hard to explain, but basically, we can use the entirety of brain but never at the same time. There, that's how I understand it.

Hard to explain, but basically, we can use the entirety of brain but never at the same time. There, that's how I understand it. It's something like that. We use all parts of our brain, but we tend to only have a certain amount noticeably active at any given time, depending on what we're currently doing. But more brain activity doesn't mean funky powers, because there aren't really "dormant" or "untapped" regions. I mean I think it's possible for our brains to evolve into being able to do more, sure, but not because of % brain usage haha.
