I just want so badly for this thing to be good. A proper scifi space game is something I sorely want to get into, and there's just nothing new worth looking at right now, nor is there anyone else really trying to make something like it.

I need something that will fill that space void in my life until bioware figures out what it wants to do with Mass Effect.

I'm hoping we finally get more information on Starfield this summer regarding story/setting and more art, even if the game is probably still is far away. Nothing can fill the Mass Effect void for me so far. Not Expanse , not any Star Trek - so resistance is futile I do (still) replay MET 2-3 times a year and now since I have the luxury of experiencing some awesome mods, especially for ME3, it sometimes feels like a new(ish) game.

Same! But I actually managed not to replay the trilogy since mid 2017, so coming up on 3 years. I hope that after all this time, it will feel a little fresh when I do go for another run.
But yea, there really still is nothing even remoretly like it. The Expanse needs a game though. That would be awesome. It could also be something that has some cool new features. Imagine if someone managed to program some cool physics system that supports dynamic changes in gravity, depending on thrust. How cool would that be?
But yea, I am also super curious about Starfield for the exact same reason. I doubt Bethesda will do anything even close to ME story wise but they are really good with world building. If they can make a decent universe with a lot of freedom for the player and good mod support, that would already be awesome. I am definitely much more excited about Starfield than I am about TES6.

I make no claims whether this is legit or not, but since it's been gaining traction today... These are apparently screenshots from a 2018 build of the game.

That's definitely not the distant future they're depicting there. Based on the comments they've made before, it sounds like it'll be a little more grounded than ME or ST... "Traveling in space in our game, I want to say it's like flight in the '40s, like it's dangerous," said Howard. "It's still dangerous to go and explore, even though lots of people do it." Howard also said he visited Musk's SpaceX headquarters as part of an effort to bring "authenticity" to Starfield, and mentioned that Helium-3—a speculative fuel for nuclear fusion—could be the isotope used to fuel Starfield's ships, or at least is something to be debated. Starfield shouldn't be confused for a rocket engineering sim, though. "We have to gamify it some," said Howard, "so that it's not as punishing as actual space travel." My impression is that, while it's an RPG and not a sim, Starfield's setting and fiction will lean toward 'hard sci-fi'—speculative, but grounded in present-day theory. As for when we'll see more, Howard repeated that we'll need to be patient.

That's definitely not the distant future they're depicting there. More accurately, not the typical distant future that’s popular in science fiction. It’s probably more likely that our manned spacecraft of the distant future, assuming that’s still a thing we continue to make or that we’re still around to keep making them, might even look cruder than this.

I love the design of that ship. It kind of gives me an Expanse-like feel, but also ever so slightly Star Wars-y, the good kind not the........now kind. Having an RPG set in space that isn’t dictated by a “magic” system has a lot of promise to be a huge breath of fresh air. I’m just yearning for this to really deliver.

thanks for sharing the pics and the quotes. definitely has an expanse-y and more realistic, almost present day look. Even if the game is still far away from release I'd love to get some basic information on the species, lore, science, ships and gameplay (can we fly the ships for example?) etc. and obviously artwork. the parent company of Bethesda game studios is going to be acquired by Microsoft btw.Would be really nice to get a status update where they are in the development phase.

The space suit looks a little weird, no? I mean, presumably the dude is in hard vacuum in that picture. Yet his "space suit" looks like it's made out of cloth which wrinkles. So either the suit is not pressurized or there is another suit under the cloth (which would be weird). Or am I seeing this wrong?
(And yea, I know I am in nitpick mode. )

Going to be interesting to play a serious Bethesda game after spending so much time with Fallout. *g*
I hope I can still be a space cow farmer. And build my own farm...
And this game better have full mod support!
Yeah, I don't really care about the science. I personally want FO4 base building in space where I can create my own hubs with my own head canon lore. After hundreds of hours of settlement building, I'm not sure I can go back to just playing a regular mediocre Bethesda narrative. Played FO3 last year for the first time and the world was SO dull and empty! Even the generic homesteads in Skyrim make me sad now. There's nothing like FO4's virtual junkyard dollhouse sim out there. I'd drool all over an expanded base building feature in Starfield.

(And yea, I know I am in nitpick mode. ) AFAIK NASA is working on more flexible pressured space suits. The current SpaceX/Spaceman ones, I think are rated for vacuum at least in emergency use too. as for the "astronaut" it looks like he has valves below the elbows, making the suit more flexible than a "jumping jack". or maybe Starfield has Mass Effect fields too for navel free clothing Certainly it's looking like thrusters/jetpack and air on the back. Interestingly the graphic circle at the bottom left has O2 and Co2 and what looks like gravity meter, rotation? and at the bottom right you can see a tool or shotgun of some sorts. the ship also has a lot of thanks, thrusters openings and what looks like tiles akin to the shuttle.

Yea, I actually read up a little on this today because this got me a bit interested. Actually, that suit would make quite a bit of sense. Aparently NASA did develop so called biosuits, that use mechanical pressure on the body to keep you "pressurized" in vacuum. Only the helmet and and potentially the gloves would need to be pressurized with air. This would be a skin tight suit made out of latex and micro-carbon plates (I am not making this up) and would be very thin and flexible. So it's quite possible he is wearing something like that under the cloth. Not quite sure how comfortable it would be exactly.
So why doesn't NASA use these today? Well, they would be super expensive to make so they still go with the bulky version but in Scifi, fully acceptable, so I take back my criticism there.
As for the SpaceX flight suits, they are flight suits and I think they are only meant to sustain you in vacuum in emergencies for a very short time. But I think they would basically "balloon" out in vacuum, leaving you with very little flexibility. Same goes for the orange flight suits that NASA presented not too long ago. They are meant to provide safety during lift-off/landing and are not meant for hard vacuum.

As a aside this was 2018, I think i read early 2018 build. When I look at what they released of the state of DA4 I think Jesus they aren't even at this 2018 state. is DA4 like 2024, 2025?

I don't mind if some of it is more grounded, like no catsuits in space ME2, but I like psychic powers or something. It not a deal breaker for me, but I'd be far more enthused if they had space magic.

I enjoy space magic just fine....in moderation. I feel that every so often, we should be permitted something that doesn’t steep itself in yet more wizardry a la telekinesis powers so we can get a more speculative brand of setting. I would have been disappointed if there was yet another type of power system where our character can wield otherworldly abilities because of the gossamer strings of the multiverse or some rock that laughs in the face of physics. This is supposed to be more a view into an actual possible future. Space magic only takes away from that in a big way.

Lack of space magic fits what we have heard about what they are going for better. I am not sure what I'd prefer is such a grounded leaning towards hard sci-fi take on a setting. He's got what looks like a shotgun in hud, but I feel when you lean towards hard a lot of the action gets taken out.
