Would be nice to have something like planet/hub/other location-specific, memorable mellow tunes going on instead of just listening to the droning sound of the Nomad and SAM constantly telling me about the temperature. Or just footsteps in when out and about in DAI, or just silence at Skyhold unless you get the bug where the dramatic war table drums keeps playing. There's just such huge swaths of both of their most recent games that feel depressingly silent. I honestly can't off the top of my head say I remember any piece music from DAI and MEA other than their respective main menu themes, which I do like. The bard in DAI was a nice touch, but I'd consider that to be a separate thing.
This is one of the things I really miss and one of the few that genuinely gets me to put on my grumpy "it used to be better" hat and wax nostalgic. It's crazy how much of an impact such a small thing has on just how much I enjoyed and still enjoy spending an obscene amount of time tinkering with gear and chatting with the gang at the camp in Origins, or going into a tavern in BG/BG2 to fine-tune and prepare spellbooks or just reading the just-for-flavor fluff books.

I miss it too, very bizarre design choice from Bioware. That Voeld exploration track is the only one I can remember after 100 hours of playing.

Maybe I'm alone here but I don't really like when the background music plays on a loop. I really loved the camp music in DA:O….at first. But after playing for countless hours I started to get tired of hearing it all the time. I hated the Normandy ambient music even more after a while. Where I wish the music was more varied and meaningful/unique are the actual missions. Inquisition gets a lot of guff for not having a track that plays all the time, but I felt it delivered the music best where it actually counted.

OMG Dragon Age Origins Camp, so many memories. As was said previously Voeld is the only zone whose music I can recall and it's great. I'm not sure why music wasn't added to the other zones.
Inquisition had some nice tracks as well
They also did a great job with the bard songs in the taverns.

They need to strike a better balance between quiet and exploration tracks. There are so many iconic ambient tracks, especially in KOTOR, that just add so much charm and character to the locations and the story. Both DAI and MEA have been basically quiet empty wastelands, and the lack of music doesn't help.
On the other hand, not everybody wants to listen to the same song playing on endless loops in big worlds like in MEA. But there should still be some music.
In an ideal scenario, they would have ambient music play 50% of the time, and 50% quiet, and maybe even put in a toggle to disable ambient music for a time.
They should honestly look to Skyrim for tips on how to do this. It had excellent exploration tracks and ambiance, and it never felt overbearing.

I too join those who don't want a repetitive ambient background track. Even if it's something I really like... which is extremely rare... it still gets old quick.
Of course the simple solution to this is to let people set the frequency of ambient music, as well as plug in their own tracks if so desired.

There's a mod for Oldrim that let's you use your own tracks... which over-loaded that poor 32bit engine when I used it... not sure if they've got one for the Special Edition yet.

I don't know if it was a bug or by design, but I honestly can't remember hardly any music in the game. Even in my recorded videos, nothing really. You can kind of hear it starting up in battles, but it's so soft, the other sounds drown it out. I don't remember any ambient music while I was just walking/driving around.

I really don't want to hear the same 2 minute song for 100 hours, so I don't think Bioware really had a choice once they decided to make the game 80+ hours long. The music isn't bad, it's just that we don't remember it because it was infrequent. However, if we had to listen to the music endlessly we would remember it -- just not in a positive way. But that DAO camp song. The memories!

lol, it would be fantastic to torture the Nomads' crew with your own favourite music. Can totally imagine an occasionally groaning Vetra "could you pleeeease switch to some better music" or Pheebee getting headaches I don't mind if there isn't a permanent loop of music, but I've just landed on Elaaden with the DA: O music still playing and all of the sudden there was the epic-dreamy feeling that MEA often misses!

There is ambient music here, just turn all other sounds down to about 60% while the music is 100% to hear it. Actually the ambient music in Voeld is very outworldy and I wish that the game had more of that, instead of the generic battle music in Kadara. Actually the music in Meridian was pretty awesome, as well as few pieces in the beginning. The romance theme was forgettable, first for Bioware for me, maybe outside DA2. It's a shame, ME2 soundtrack made the game feel so alive, and ME3 soundtrack is a masterpiece.

I actually think it gets drowned out by all the other sounds. I'm sure I've heard music but the mix is so poor you don't hear it.

the music is there, it is just very very quiet and well, unremarkable for the most part also it is very easy to disable/mute, so why would something like "it is annoying" be any argument at all and this FO... seriously? thats the radio and the game so easily modded, we can add thousands of songs if we want to

I for one want the merciless looping of 2-minute-songs back!! Dunno if my copy is bugged or if the mix's really that poor, but after almost 200 hours in the game, I can't single out even one song.... and that's just sad to me.
I finished Nier: Automata just before starting with Andromeda and... the approach to music in it is pretty much at the other end of the spectrum. It's loud, looped and in your frigging face, so to speak, all the time. The first track in the game:
Heh, to me, that's just sublime, but I can understand that'd get annoying to others, so options would be nice.
Oh and DA:I had an excellent OST!

BIG BIG BIG mistake ! Background music is absolutely MUST BE. I also don't understand WHY there is no music during exploration ??? I spend so many hours in Mako because I love driving and listening music at the same time. In Nomad it feels so... empty.
Who knows, maybe incoming patch will change it ? Well, there is a soundtrack for MEA, not the best maybe, but still...
BIOWARE BRING EXPLORATION / BACKGROUND MUSIC BACK !!

Yes, it becomes really, really apparent about 20 hours in. The first few hours you're still grasping at the situation and getting comfortable with the mechanics. It's a terrible oversight and it cheapens the overall experience.

It took my breath away only because I felt like I had just walked into a jazz club and it sounded genuine. Other than that, it's recycled songs from Fallout 3. There are some great mods out there. Too bad EA f***ed all that up.

The lack of background music is actually one of my biggest gripes with the game. It just makes it so much harder for me to immerse myself. An example is that when you go on an 'ancient remnant sudoku from another galaxy' solving quest again you can sometimes spend up to 10 minutes in a bland screen without any sounds whatsoever. It's just a killer for immersion. I might have liked the sudoku's more (doubt it, but it's possible) if there was actually some music to keep you occupied. I also want to give an example of a game where the background music is extremely strong and immersive although I'm probably going to get lynched for saying the name so I'll just let you guys guess which game it is . (There is a thread discussing that game VS Andromeda on the front page though). The strong points of the music in that game are that there is A LOT of it and that it really helps enhance the emotional moments of the game. I also applaud it because the developers really thought about making the music match with the setting. In fact, I must admit that I still listen nearly daily to the 'one hour of emotional music' videos on youtube when I have to concentrate or write a paper. (link in the spoiler tag) There are only a few other games which hold that honour: Oblivion, Fallout New Vegas and Mass Effect 2 and 3. Although ME:A is of course a game in an entirely different setting, there is still so much more the developers could have done when it comes to music and sounds. A radio in the Nomad where you could upload your own music next to some pre-made songs or a lot of electronic background music for when you're driving around would have been infinitely better for me than the awkward silence for example. About the notion here that music becomes too noticable: I can see where that issue comes from and that is obviously a downside of having music in a vast game like ME:A because you can never have enough music to keep it new in a 100 hour game. I can't really relate however because it has never bothered me. I have over 300 hours on New Vegas and I always have the radio on. Also, like someone else pointed out, it is always quite easy to just switch music off when it becomes too repetitive. Then you'll just be back to what we have now in ME:A. It is however, in my opinion, always better to have the option to toggle music on or off than to have no option at all. By the way, about Fallout New Vegas: I always switch radio stations when Johnny Guitar comes on. When I'm listening on youtube I just skip the song. It's the only song where I do that, love the rest. Edit: Also uploaded my favorite song from Oblivion. Jeremy Soule is a master when it comes to creating good background music. I also like this song because I instantly have flashbacks about the wonderful 'Radiant AI' of that game.
