For all things Steam I look at Steamspy. Almost 500K sold doesn't look bad for KCD for a start.

They had a vision and went after it. Is there any way I can review the Kickstarter goals? The KS goals are still on the ks front page for the game. They made the game the way games are supposed to be made: the same vision from start to finish. And yeah for 1m copies sold.

I hear the System Shock rework is done for - mostly because of losing scope and feature creep.

That is a blog entry from Daniel Vávra (KCD writer and director) from 2012... He's a good narrator. And good points - Many games I've enjoyed the last couple years were actually made by small teams. It's like an artist though - you gotta have the talent to make that vision become true. And then sell it - here's where people with a wide range of skills really shine.

Pretty darn close. The only aspects that are not why are multiplayer, but it is a question of risk taking and ambition being high, without unecessary baggage. It's making me enjoy the game despite glaring flaws that hold it back, it took chances that mostly pay off. Well done. Another point in regards to KCD and games in general: There are a lot of (controversial) claims that video games cost a lot more to make, do to the use of new technologies etc. and therefore require (supposedly) monetization in the form of MTX/LB and similar. I think that if anything, games like KCD, or MP titles like PUBG or Fortnite, prove that actual gamers are mostly content with "lesser" technology when the games themselves actually has something interesting to offer. Hell, personally I don't really mind in some cases pixelated graphics, cell-shaded graphics, or top-down old-style CRPGs. The games I enjoyed most lately are not of the classic definition of triple-A, and some of them were designed in one of the styles I mentioned. I think that the constant chase after new technology is motivated by other interests, not necessarily by consumer demands. True, but I would also put the caveat to the fact that the "lesser" games listed are more counter-culture vs toleration. They offer a lot because it's not a Whopper or a Big Mac, it's instead a 5 Guys or Big Burger or something new/different enough to be considered better. Even if, by point of fact, they have problems or are no better or worse. It is a sort of growing phenomenon I think because of what the games represent, versus who or how they are made.

I'm not an american, so the analogy is somewhat lost on me... Could you elaborate on what you meant? In other words, its more popular because its not mainstream...despite being of similar quality of what is mainstream in most cases. And they have to have McDonalds and Burger King and terrible fast food overseas!

Yes, I decided to do some Kingdom Come Delirium, yesterday and the experience was quite unique while riding, lol.
Also, does he have other animations when drunk? I looked to me he made a more drunk impression when interacting with NPCs. He did a hilarious throwaway gesture when I refused to take some reward for some christian deed.

So yesterday I went with Henry to a scribe to learn how to read. I must say that I was impressed by how the game handled that. I was half expecting the game to hand-wave the whole thing away with: "Gimme da monies, okay now you can read!!!111" Instead, we got an immersive cutscene with a time-skip in it, where you see Henry actually learning how to read! I can't stress enough how helpful such things are for immersion. At least for me. Also afterwards there's a question. "What did you read?" And you can answer with either "I'll read it again" "Something about a goose and a man" or "Greed doesn't pay" and far as I can tell, "Greed doesn't pay" is the right answer, because it's not what's WRITTEN, but what the MEANING behind it is. That was a neato detail.

Yes, I'm fairly certain that animations change. I accidentally did the guard patrol quest while drunk, and it was fairly hilarious to watch Henry berating people for disorderly conduct while swaying on the spot... I also like the drunken sermon.

Honestly it should have been, come back for lessons each week sort of thing until you get rank 4 of reading. That has been a sticking point for me, the relative shortness if what I figured would be lobg form quest lines. Such as the courting quest line...i was highly dissapointed at the end of it because it seems all interactivity after its finished is gone, including options for gifts and talking about what you did and all that, and they built it up so well... I was not a fan of that one at all.

I very much liked the courting quest, but yes. I'm sad that afterwards there's next to no content.
And sure, I met a "clairvoyant" (quotes used because of doubt) who said Henry's woman would be named Catherine, but I didn't trust her in the first place.

That's the thing, the fact that it's a side quest where we dictate pacing, but after the reward it just ends and we lose all interactivity, totally kills the flow of the character and the strength of the interactivity. It ruins the sense of realism the world struggles to hold up to begin with. The little vignettes they did provide were good, but they lose all emotional resonance soon after you are rewarded. It's a mix of good ideas with bad game design and writing decisions.

All good points, still, I think that while the game is far from perfect, it got enough things right to the point that other developers should take notes if they make a game that's somewhat similar. I like the idea of the combat system (especially since I got better at it...), I like the idea that Alchemy actually requires you to DO the alchemy. I like the fact that it takes time to read books, and that your ability to actually read improves the more you read. I like the start of the Theresa romance arc (I'm around the middle and so far it seems very charming and realistic). I keep imagining what a fantasy game like TES or DA would look like if it had an actual pseudo-realistic melee combat system, and perhaps a magic combat system as well, perhaps with some interaction between them. (use magic to actively shield yourself in melee or blast an opponent away, rather than merely casting buffs or casting nukes that have no real impact, have a counter-spelling system and the ability to have actual magical duels! Use enchanted shields to deflect magical projectiles, etc.) This has the potential to be amazing. Basically, I find this sort of pseudo-realism to be a refreshing change, no matter what setting you apply it to. Well thats the key, its refreshing because this is normally only relegated to mods people put in on themselves. Were in that niche where it is kind of fun for us, or at least a challenge to do, but the majority I don't think will find that fun at all. I make no bones that this game is good, but it's good because it does a lot of things differently and took risks. It's why I said a page back, on a technical level there is no real difference between this and Andromeda, to use that example. We like this more because it feels different enough to be new, and we are in agreeance with the mechanics of it. It's why some reviewers out there didn't enjoy it...too clunky, compounded with the bugs and other nagging issues and all that.

I was able to chuck in the bouquet from the Hans+bathhouse quest for Teresa as present after romance, but nothing else. She just wanted Hal for the sex.

Some gifts are actually fairly cheap, like certain dresses. Personally I'm not feeling strapped for cash. Killing bandits and looting them + poaching seems sufficient so far. I'm not sad for the money. I'm sad for the lonely soul and broken heart.

For those who are further in the main story - when is a good time to take it easy and just do sidequests? I'm trying to mix it, but I'm often supposed to meet with another NPC on certain hour or daytime (and I suspect there might be negative consequences if I don't show up at least until tommorow), but I feel I might lose some content before I finish the main storyline.

Actually had a prompt that doing a certain thing in the main quest would end up disallowing me to continue certain things. I dunno more at this time. Haven't made it past the point very far.
