SO now all caught up with Lower Decks and no quasi looking forward to the new season starting on the 7th! Ugh so much I low key wanna watch. :/ Anyways the worse thing I can say about this show is there is times that it is a bit boring and a bit just hard to be invested. It really reminds me of TNG (the second comedic sci fi show that I have watched recently that does have a lot of shades of TNG to it). Or I guess the best way to say is that it is kind of like what SNWs is to TOS. A lot of the same type of stories that TOS did with a lot of the same character archetypes....just at the end of the day with the modern sensibilities for serialization and long term storytelling with the character arcs and some of the background plot lines. Singular episodes but with lines or sequences sprinkled here and there that advance the overall plot. And perhaps the biggest bit of TNG or even Farscape lot of weak singular episodes in a season but some really amazing 'two parters' and season finales. The best thing about the show is the cast...at least the lower deckers. All of them are very likeable characters, Mariner has a great sense of comedic timing and Tawny Newsome does a great job with her voice delivery (she works better in anime honestly), Boimler is endearing and very relatable...as is Tendi...and Rutherford may be the weakest of the cast for me but he is pretty sweet in his own right. The bridge crew still is taking a bit to get used to, Freeman has grown on me but is really incompetent at times. Hate Ransom still, Riker/Trip without ANY of the charm and the councelor is Deanna without any of her...charms either I guess. Feels so weird giving her credit. Shax is the best though. Season 3 spoilers So I guess since its fresh in my mind and the only thing worth it...the season finale really was amazing and with it being set up throughout the season and the whole bit of this technically being a two parter.
Yep. First off to expand on the above really think Freeman did Mariner dirty. I knew in the back of my head she didn't say anything and she was just trying to explain herself and no one believed her. Heartbreaking its own right. And the moment Freeman put Migleemo in charge of the bridge I was like "no!" *waves at the screen*. And Rutherford's plot arc the entire season, hell for the entire show, really paid off.
So this episode...I dunno how intentional the timing was on it...but given all the AI stuff in the news this episode felt like a very timely allegory for Trek. Kind of a direct retelling of The Ultimate Computer (one of Lower Decks more annoying habbits not telling new stories just retelling old ones, very obviously) But given AI has been in the news so much lately, again, this message seems like a really important story to tell. And really get the idea that they were at least trying to convey, of being able to outthink and come together to human a way of the sollution is well taken...though I wonder if they should've taken time to focus on that instead of the more Ultimate Computer 'computer with daddy issues' plot point. Yeah more I think about it should've made this a three parter, way too much story to tell in here...but still a great episode overall do not get me wrong. And the subplot with Mariner and the archeologist and Boimler and Shax were both really well done. Speaking of Mariner though this show does, in a good way, love playing with expectations. To find out that Picard was the one funding the archeological mission, mostly works. Also couldn't help but notice that the Soverign class got its butt handed to it.
Anyways though the final bit with all the Calis coming and Mariner coming to save the day almost had my in tears, what a wonderful set piece.

I was thinking for just a moment that she did turn over a new leaf...like what I said...this show loves messing with your expectations.

Insurrection. The Motion Picture. Yep. My order would definitely be different. Part of the fun of this. Kind of funny though in that regard I guess Insurrection could maybe qualify as a 'guilty pleasure' movie for me. Though its themes of Picard and co actually kicking some tyranical Starfleet butt would be up my alley I recognize there was a lot of questionable humor in that to. But its still aged really well imo and it still looks really good. Nemesis on the other hand I liked on my first watch through like really liked it but since then hasn't aged well at all.

But its still aged really well imo and it still looks really good. Nemesis on the other hand I liked on my first watch through like really liked it but since then hasn't aged well at all. How you feel about Nemesis is how I feel about Generations -so much wasted potential. Kirk is all alone with only a horse. Isn't the Nexus supposed to give you the life you desire? Could he not have had his Wife and Son back and been living a better life there that he would have desired? IT would have given some pain to him wanting to stay or leave. Alas some show later on pulled this off better. -Note this link has scream at end). First Contact however is more of that guilty pleasure for me. Though its not do to the two ST VOY cameos: Doctor and Nelix. For me its more about the "timey whimy" -DW reference for the uninitiated. Another thing is finally getting the upper hand over those pesky Borg is a nice plus. Insurrection seems like a rushed movie to me. Not to mention you can see the Baku and Sona being the same race a mile a way. I do find it ironic that all the crude supposed humor of Insurrection is more off putting than the crude plot. Also Brent Spiner did want out of the franchise initially in Insurrection instead of Nemesis. The thing about Insurrection that I do find ironic and funny is Rick Berman saying to Brent Spiner: "Sorry. Kill you next time!". on a POST-IT note pasted to Brent Spiners' copy of the script and then follows up in doing so in Nemesis. Nemesis however has more importance for me and no its not the fact that like Into Darkness it rips off Wrath of Khan... Its actually the first time we see the Mogai and Scimitar class warbirds on screen but in STO the power of the two can be reversed if you build it right. I also like that Shelofs Syndrome -from which I suffer has a classification. You also get one if not the only most important scenes in all of Star Trek: Data's emotional goodbye.

tier 2 next to ST Beyond. Again never saw the box arts... That being said.... You dare put it that low?!!!!!!! yeah admittedly it's a bit of a bubble movie + probably suffers from it being the movie I've seen the most so it's probably gotten a bit stale to me in adulthood. Like it and Wrath of Khan have probably pretty much flipped.

Moopsy! Spoilers for the first two episodes of Lower Decks season 4 That first Voyager Themed episode went a bit too much into rehashing Voyager episode Enemies and themes for my taste. Though the Tuvix-ed / Twovixed / Multivixed (?) Crew part was actually nice - would have been better if it was more developed, but then again that probably would have been even more of an episode rehash. I had some great fun with the second episode though. Ransom trying to not let Mariner irritate him into a demotion again was really nice. Banana people are now canon in star trek? Come to think of it, that episode reminds me of some of those Xenonion entries. And that Moopsy is an absolutely adorable little killer critter The Xenonion news i meant above, no Star Trek spoilers in there
Honestly if you don't know that stellaris themed Onion channel, check it out, their stuff is hilarious

Double dip here we go again. Season 4 episode 1...Twovix. The title which almost makes spoilers irrelevant but KrrKs reminded me I should at least be considerate. And I also have to echo the sentiment about the general review. Well the DS9 episode was far better as an episode then this was, this one felt far too referential at the expense of telling a good story. Buuuut. -Janeway did nothing wrong. Now I know this is a bit of a weird one again but it really surprised me to see that apparently this is an argument in fandom...that Janeway 'murdered' Tuvix. I'm with T'lynn honestly. Call it the trolly problem, call it saving two people at the expense of another, but if it follows that you are murdering a unique life form then by not acting you've already murdered two other unique life forms. I have spoken. So the constant references to Janeway murdering Tuvix really annoyed. +Cried at Voyager. I cried when we saw her at Athan Prime. And I cried now. My favorite Trek as a child though probably supplanted by DS9 and though I didn't get a chance to watch the series in its entirety until later but mega nostalgia. Love the ship. Love the cast. And well I've talked about that enough. +The set up of the joke. Now it should've been obvious where it was going...but I was also spoiled to the fact. So seeing the petal just floating through the air was kind of amusing. +The 'horror' of the B plot. SO since this is Trek Boimler's historically bad day gets historically bad as he almost wrecks a museum piece. +Echo all the sentiments of Trek Culture on the holograms. +Mariner and Michael Sullivan reallllyyy get along...and now she is being dragged away by two of them. +Oh an old nanite has assimilated the Macro Virus and is assimilating the ship...really ironic fate for Voyager. - Big down long time coming since this is the second time its come up. But then the ship sets course for a Borg Cube. And there shouldn't be a collective or a Borg Cube at all right now. Especially the implication is...in the Alpha Quadrant? Like End Game crippled and destroyed the collective...this was later confirmed by Picard Season 3 when it just looks like the COllective was barely hanging on. Sure I can buy a single nanite restarting the Collective argument as Trek Culture mentioned but...that clearly didn't happen. So big down to negative continuity. +Meanwhile T'lliups gets an evil plan together to start combining the crew together for hillarious effect 'bring me more delicious senior staff'...except... -So this thing combines two individuals and they obviously have the same memories...so why did...Friedamoo..start acting all muhahaha. She would've known that Freeman would've wanted to find a more 'peaceful' solution to the problem. She would've had the idea and acccepted the logic that maybe Starfleet command would've found a better solution. But instead she instantly is like 'yes must have more senior staff'. Did not make sense. +Boimler and Mariner's heart to heart. These two have an amazing friendship. And given Mariner's prolictivities no desire to really ship the two...unlike another Lower Deck's couple. SO just a lot of wholesomness which shows plenty of growth for both Mariner and Boims and the two have definitley established themselves amongst some of the golden friendships of the series at this point. +I am the son of Captain Proton! With so many great gags this was the best. +The Cheese saves the day...it was really nice to see Chekov's cheese for lack of another term. +A redemption arc for Ransom pt 1? So I have made no bones about hating Ransom to this point. One of the more 'get off my screen characters' in Trek to this point. But his conversation with Mariner here is really nice though more contextually because of his conversation with her in the next episode to. But he shows empathy, caring, and recognizes her growth potential. +A new threat? So that new ship at the end is interesting. First thought is Section 31 so that is interesting to. Klingons got blown up. 4.2...I have no Bones Yet I must flee. This is much more like it. In an ironic twist I think these two episodes should've been flipped because this felt much more like a return to actual Lower Decks fair and it would've been better on the sensibilities I think if the fanservice episode went later in the season. -So comedy does this thing where they really highlight a thing to an extreme for comedic effect, the trouble is it does not always work...see also the Very Short Trek for instance. But in this case it does highlight another issue. Much like with the portrayal of the Klingons the portrayal of the ROmulans is just such race of hats dialed up to eleven. Now Trek races even the big ones tend to be 'race of hats'...but my goodnewss those ROmulans were acting so cliche and Romulan. My wife even asked 'my goodness how did they even invent space travel' +Mariner overhears Ransom which sets up the storyline and is used to the usal comedic effect. +Moopsy +Livik! *clenches fists* +Continuity...so maybe this is a result of binging it but I didn't notice that this show got too self referential or too internal continuity...even anti continuity at times...except for the notable Penut Hamper incident. But this episode did a great job carrying on plotlines/ character lines from previous seasons and even the prvious season. The main bit Rutherford not getting promoted in the last episode with the rest of them. That was major. +Mariner being her most Mariner in awhile. Shows up to an away mission in sports bra and gym shorts. Also love the interplay between her and the new guy. +Moopsy being terrifying. +The redemption of Ransom Pt 2. So again Ransom really comes through and shines and I think its A. because the two aren't related that he has the distance to notice but B. because Freeman forced the two of them to work together that he was able to notice and appreciate her abilities. I also love the psychological aspect of Mariner's flaws. This goes all the way back to the first holodeck episode where she beats the heck out of her mom on it because of her needing to go to therapy. And just whatever her issues are Ransom is the first one to recognize that she does have these issues and is willing to look past them because he sees her potential. Though in a weird way one of her COs was Sisko right? *cough* +The Boimler plot. Was pretty great to. I loved the gag with the nacelle and wifey was like 'can't he just shade the windows' and then Rutherford shades the windows. +Tendi 'dressing down' Rutherford. Love Tendi. Probably my favorite character of the bunch. Odd that she's 'not that kind of Orion' but she just chews Rutherford out and asks him to get his act together...which we then find out Rutherford was offered a promotion before and then she is like 'hey Billups can he have a promotion for that one time'...and he just gets it. Says soemthing weird about how the crew operates and gets promotions but still fun gag...Rutherford! *shakes fists* +So yeah half a win but I set it up myself and did not pay it off but I'm really starting to ship Rutherford and Tendi. Like they also have a friendship thing going on like Mariner and Boimler but at times there are strong indications that they could be something more. And double fun fact though in a very fun and mutually supportive manner and not the cliche 'oh we are going to act like we hate each other even though we like each other.' +The most dangerous game- Find it fun what modern Trek does, Modern Trek does good things, Modern Trek does bad things but I just sometimes love how the new Trek adds more nuance to humanity at times. It was a stupid as hell plan but the humans let the Moopsy out so they could run the station in the aftermath. So yeah humans suck at times and unlike in the TNG episode its not 'oh look at how superior we are over those stupid capitalist 20th century humans we are so perfect aren't we number one?' No, all humans suck, everywhere. So yeah its fine when you take the piss out of yourself.

First ep of the new season of LD felt like a love-letter to the folks over at r/shittydaystrom on reddit.
Edit: FWIW I'm actually serious about this. I used to post and comment there a bit. It hits... a lot of content there.

I didn't mind the Voyager excursion. Sure, it was kinda neglecting to tell a Lower Decks story in favor of just making the entire episode all about the references but hey, that is a big part of the show, so I thought it was fair game. Maybe a bit weird to make this episode 1 of the new season but that's ok. And at least they are hanging a lamp shade over it at the end, when Freeman acknowledges that it was string of "bizarre Voyager themed disasters" or something like that. Ep2 was decent. Wasn't the biggest fan of the Rutherford plot tbh. Seemed a little out of character for both him and Billips. Tendy was awesome though. And I feel we've seen this plotline for Mariner three times already. But I am still laughing at Shax and Ransom in those outfits in the gym. I mean, we knew it from the trailer but that joke just doesn't get old. Also, I think Trek Culture might have missed an Orville reference there at the end, when the red kid teases the humans in the zoo. That seemed awfully familiar, especially with her being a blonde with shoulder long hair (I don't think the guy was as close but still).

I instantly thought of Orville with the whole menage concept and why they were going.
