I wasn't sure of the timing, because I'm not following the hype cycle. I was concerned that if I waited any longer (and I've been sitting on this list for a long, long time) I would miss the window of opportunity.
It's one part stirring the pot and one part genuine warning. I really do want people, especially the people on the list, to remember how unhappy they were with Andromeda. And to exercise good judgment about how they spend their time and money. Ultimately the decision is up to each individual, of course.
I also have another post I've been saving for a long, long time, but that one will wait until Anthem actually drops. It's a collection of things we've learned about Bioware games over the years, with an emphasis on multiplayer. We'll see how many of them are still true with Anthem.

I'm in a weird spot where I am pretty sure I will enjoy some co-op fun in Anthem, especially if I can convince my brother to get it, but at the same time I have serious reservations about supporting the title because Bioware has all but abandoned ME:A and just left Dragon Age fans in the wind.
I know their little DA teaser was aimed directly at people like me ... to try and convince us that they still care about Dragon Age but DA:I was a big hit for them, won awards, and made money and they have just left it in the lurch for so long.
As for ME:A they just bowed down to all the negativity, turned tail and ran away. We have plenty of recent examples of games where the developers did the opposite (released game, got slated hard, decided to stick to it and turn it around) and that kind of courage is what I wanted to see from Bioware. Not relegating interesting and hinted at story elements to novels and a big cold shoulder to those of us that loved the game.
At the same time I still got nothing but love for Bioware. They have just made too many of my favorite games for me to give up.
So I probably shouldn't be getting Anthem and I really should NEVER pre-order anything ... but I will most likely pre-order Anthem. I'm still kind of on the fence but leaning towards at least buying it, probably being a sucker and pre-ordering it.
I have never been conflicted when it came to buying a Bioware title. Not even MDK2 way back in the day.

As my skepticism towards Anthem increased (and related, as the hype from fanbois increased) one thing I didn't count on was my desire to be front and center for a possible dramatic flop. I'm still not pre-ordering and won't make a decision on day 1 purchase until I get to play the demo beta but looking back on it the threads on various forums for how janky and awful MEA was were so god damn hilarious that I really want front row seats.
I expect this is why Anthem will have CC presets, not a full-blown creator.

Has anyone tried to estimate why they're even bothering, given that in third person you're always inside a javelin and when you're not in a javelin, you're FPOV inside Fort Tarsis?

In game cutscenes, probably.
Also the face is shown briefly everytime you launch a mission, it seems.

Exactly. so you need to pick a face you are happy with, without having to resort to the 'Ugly Creator'.

You can also make amazing looking characters in ME:A! That was really funny though.

I feel the same way. As much as I'm still angry and bitter at the Andromeda debacle, it was also weirdly fun to be a part of it.
I mean, when else am I am going to get to be Twitch-stream famous?

See, that sucks tho because I rather them have stuck with Mass Effect and try to turn it around as I much prefer ME to DA. Saying oh but we still care about this other franchise doesn't really help just because it's the same genre (rpg) as the other.
The even worse part is... a lot of the gameplay for Anthem looks really Mass Effecty which to me says it's gonna be the successor if it does well. =/
This is not a criticism … more of a different perspective on your point.
Smoother combat … ala Mass Effect … is a good thing … BioWare is using lessons from their other games to make new games. Your concerns over Anthem replacing BioWare's RPGs … is not a trivial concern … but I think Anthem is designed for a different audience than ME or DA.
The audience may be a Venn diagram of sorts, where folks who played ME and DA … mostly for SP, also enjoyed the heck out of ME3MP and liked MEAMP as well … and might be interested in Anthem. They are combined with folks who mostly play shooters and have never really been interested in RPGs, but who might find the enhanced story elements (compared to most shooters) both interesting and refreshing.
I see Anthem as a modernized version of some of their earlier forays into MP (predating ME3), where story and MP were both a significant thing. That's always been a tough thing to do well and BioWare thinks they might have cracked that nut with Anthem. Time will tell.
But I don't think that makes ME or DA less likely. Both ME and DA may become live services, but might well remain self-contained SP games, with a MP element added on. I didn't play DAIMP, but I played the heck out of ME3MP and MEAMP. It didn't detract from my SP runs through those games. I doubt Anthem will replace my desire for more ME and DA. If anything, for me, Anthem will be a bridge to hold me over until the next DA … and ultimately ME … which is where my (two sizes too small) heart really lies.

I would have loved for them to stick with ME: Andromeda. ME1 and MEA are my two favorites of the Mass Effect franchise. I really wanted to continue the Ryder's story. Just not enough people enjoyed it and not enough money to keep it going for EA I guess.

They're my two favorites as well, excluding ME2's suicide mission.

I agree there are lots of loners like myself out there (oops just ratted myself out) who enjoy the SP games, then there those who enjoy MP and/or a combination of the two etc so my thoughts are Bioware is not going to abandon all for the sake of one play style (MP) there is money to be made from us all.
My bright outlook is: Anthem kills it. Bio keeps a dedicated and amazing live team on Anthem constantly making it better while having the bulk of the rest of the crew work on their other games and instead of all the stress of paying salaries for 4 to 5 years with zero income coming in we see them really hit their stride as they enter a new company wide golden age as a developer. Anthem keeps raking in cash while also continuously becoming a better game (see ex. Warframe). EA sees how awesome Bioware really are and backs off a bit and just lets them make the games they want, how they want, with almost zero interference.
As soon as other titles (DA:4 for example) near completion members of teams, that are able to, shift back to Anthem for massive updates (giant WoW style expansions) then shift on to the next project (ME:A2 (please) or ME:Whateverthefuckit'sgoingtobe) leaving the live team in place on Anthem to sustain the ongoing ever growing game. Devs who want to stretch their wings on different projects and not stagnate may jump between full dev cycle games and stints on the live team for Anthem. This invigorates their creative process and makes them really strong and happy ... they go around high-fiving every person they see and even help solve problems in their local communities just by being there.
My dark outlook is: Anthem kills Bioware.

I do not understand where people think JRandall is naming and shaming, or hating.
He is making a point you numbskulls. OP included, many have had their interest damaged in BW product, from their recent product satisfaction. Me too.
As if we needed reminding of that point. I can't swing a cat'o'nine without hitting at least a dozen reminders on BSN. In completely inappropriate threads, to boot.
The post is illustrating what I have known for years now - long-time fans have become wary, and are also called haters because they don't slurp on BWs delicious asshole all day.
Well it's a good thing we aren't being reductive and dividing the world into just two sides. /s
Confirmed by the hater haters, who are a very lively and condemnable bunch.
No, no. You can't complain about the usage of "hater" and then turn around and use it yourself.
And you got me all wrong. I don't give a shit about defending Bioware or their allegedly delicious asshole. I'm lively in my desire to get people to own their own bullshit. And so much of this, I don't know what to call it, alerting the unsuspecting to the evils of abusive Bioware? -- is just bitterness and inability to deal with one's own disappointments. Why does that justify anti-social behavior? Why does that justify spewing inane and repetitive grumbling all over the place, at every opportunity, particularly when someone is innocently enthusing about something Bioware?
Worst of all is when that disappointment and heartbreak is disguised as standing up for consumer rights or championing gamer lifestyle or some other such fakery. If I repeatedly cry out against my disappointment and heartbreak, I'm just a nerd, but if I cry out about the injustice and greed of corporate EA, then I'm a freedom fighter, and entitled to spew against EA anywhere and anytime, in the name of justice! That utter mendaciousness really pisses me off.
For once, I'd like to see someone just say it like it is: I loved Mass Effect, it was my whole emotional life and I deeply identified with Shepard, and Bioware fucked it up with the RGB ending and now I'm broken hearted and bitter and I need to lash out at everyone and everything because I just don't know how to deal with it.
A statement like that would get no condemnation from me.
Inquisitor: Is that innuendo? Sera: No, it's at the front!
You've just watched clips from the best ME game in the franchise; according to the majority of this forum user base lol.
I still remember the adventures of ugly Shep (it was called something that, I don't know if that is the exact title) ...

Of all the things to criticize about this thread (and there are many), the one getting the biggest reaction is my use of the word "haters"?
I mean, let's set aside the twisting of linguistic knots it takes to not construe, "I will never buy another Bioware game again," and "You have officially lost me as a costumer," and "I feel totally played by Bioware," as quintessential knee-jerk EA/Bioware hate speech, because my original point was that it was a bad list of haters. Incomplete. Inadequate. Sub-par. Lame.
I mean, if you are going to post a list of haters, at least do a good job of it. Like don't include people who just want to wait for a sale, ffs.
Or better yet, don't have a list at all. That seems better.
No! Op is doing God's work! We should be happy simply being allowed to share the same atmosphere with a man so noble as him.
