What's the competition for Bioware style RPG's? I'm genuinely curious. I'd love to have some more of these types of games to play but quite frankly when I want a Bioware style RPG I seem to have to boot up a Bioware game.
I have a lot of RPG's from plenty of different developers but none of them do party based rpg's even remotely the same as Bioware.
Coming up in 2019? The Outer Worlds from Obsidian looks promising. Wasteland 3 might be good? Beyond 2019, Cyberpunk 2077 is looming on the horizon. You think 2020 or 2021 for Cyberpunk? I know for sure BioWare isn't going to release DA4 until 2021 at least.

It was originally called Cyberpunk 2020 .. so 2020 seems like a really cool year to bring the new video game adaptation out.

Hey, that's me!
I'm still on the no pre-order boat, but I'm not that guy that gave up on Bioware games. While I'm not pumped at all for Anthem (even thinking of skipping it, since it's not my cup of tea), I'm still waiting anxiously for the next Mass Effect title.
But about pre-ordering stuff, I don't usually play games on their release days, so it's a no-brainer for me.

As silly as it sounds I preorder knowing that the as shipped will have its bugs that will get fixed while I'm in the cc making my toon I'm in no rush to get to the finish line so to speak.

What's the competition for Bioware style RPG's? I'm genuinely curious. I'd love to have some more of these types of games to play but quite frankly when I want a Bioware style RPG I seem to have to boot up a Bioware game. Depends on how important romances are to you. Bioware pretty much has a lock on that kind of content, with one exception see below. If you are willing to forgo romances: If you can play on PS4, there are plenty of options. The last 3 years have been a bonanza for deep story-centric SP games on PS4, and even longer than that if you count The Last of Us. Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, and Hellblade:Senua's Sacrifice are all games I highly recommend. I'm in the middle of Red Dead Redemption 2 at the moment and liking it, so that's another. If you are on PC or Xbox, I'd recommend NieR:Automata and the only other game that has Bioware-like romance options, that I can recommend: Life is Strange 1. None of the above are create your own character. They are all more like Mass Effect where you inhabit a specific character. There's also one more game that has romances but I can't recommend it. Detroit:Become Human. I don't hate it as much as some do, but I didnt find much to like either. LiS and Detroit aren't RPG'S either. They are more like pick your own adventure, Walking Dead style.

I played almost all of those, at least partially! Not quite scratching the same itch but great games. Detroit I played a couple chapters and decided to save it for later ... I am stockpiling as much cyberpunk/sci-fi human android etc stuff I can for the lead up to Cyberpunk 2077 so I can completely overdose on the genre. I actually really enjoy David Cage games though and what I played of Detroit was pretty cool.
Your first sentence pretty much nails down how I feel, in that Bio has a lock on a very specific brand of deep character interaction in party based RPG's ... I do need to play Torment: Tides of Numenera which I hear has some good party dynamics and also Divinity Original Sin 2 ... I just have to get my brain in the right place to play turn based (which is weird because I grew up playing turn based but I need to be in the right mood).

DOS2 is a goddamn masterpiece. It's got a 93 on Metacritic which makes it one of the highest rated PC games of all time and it's entirely deserved. The companion stories and subquests are really great, and there's romance options which play out really well with surprisingly good... er, "romance scenes" lol. Chris Avellone (Planescape: Torment and KOTOR2 among other titles) was involved and the character he wrote for has a fucking incredible story.

Well, they shitted us with their last two MP releases:
DAIMP was so buggy it dint survive the initial month of non-maintenance. The release timing was really bad. Don't buy any x-mas releases since. MEAMP they dint figure out until like half a year after release. It was fun to punch pixels for two weeks then the overall shit balance got old. It's pretty hard to make a good SP combat and then fuck it up so colossally in MP.
So yeah, I'm not hyped. Mildly interested. If it's just for the drama.

I'm not bitter. Lots of other cool games out there. Just disappointed and not very optimistic about Bioware's future. Same goes for Bethesda. As long as the competition picks it up, there is no reason for gloom. Life goes on with or without Bioware!
Every game developer's style is unique, of course. So while there isn't any developer that does companions EXACTLY like Bioware, there have been a number of games that do emotional character driven storytelling as well or better than Bioware in the past few years.
While Andromeda left me very cold, I cried playing Horizon Zero Dawn, was deeply moved by Arthur Morgan's story in RDR2 recently, loved every second of Witcher 3... the companions of Divinity Original Sin 2 were way more interesting than any of MEA... just to name a few games that bet Bioware at their own game imo.
Companion banter is something that Bioware does very very well. And the competition for this level of interaction cannot compete indeed. So the question is, what exactly you're looking for. An overall attractive RPG package? A really well written story? Romances? Imo Bioware today is only superior to other RPGs in terms of party banter and the amount of people you can bang. They used to be THE best developer for emotional storytelling but the competition in that regard has stepped up their game. Pretty much all open world designs by other devs are superior. So it comes down to specifics and personal priorities.
