Right. Germany. Pros: - a robust, relatively competently run economy - a mostly efficient and affordable health care system - cutting edge technology level (go, experimental stellarator fusion reactor) - beer... pretty damn good beer - not very religious populace (though that's changing for the worse, slowly) - low crime rate (which is also changing for the worse) - some beautiful places like the Rhine valley - a language in which you can say "good morning" and make it sound like a threat - home of the original Disney castle (Neuschwanstein) Cons: - has a government that gladly sacrifices the wellbeing of the populace over that of corrupt banks, large corporations, broke EU countries and strangers of suspicious background - part of the EU... i.e. member of an incompetently run club where half the people has one hand in our purse and shows us the middle finger with the other - almost uniformly left-biased media who scream "nazi!" and "Fourth Reich!" at even the slightest hint of dissent - a justice system that would rather punish a potential victim for fighting back while migrant group rapists go free - an overworked police force whose results get screwed by the justice system mentioned above - a run-down military that gets sent to fight in places that don't concern us at all - hundreds of thousands of strangers who claim to have fled from war (all through Europe) but just can't find their ID to prove it Oh I'm pretty sure that Merkel can get rid of most of those pros if you reelect her for another term.- Which is most likely going to happen. You Austrians have the chance to select the "right" leader for your country. Dat re-election.

FIRST STATE TO SECEDE FROM THE UNION REMOVE LINCOLN South Carolina is so pretty! When I lived in Georgia, I had never met so many Civil War buffs. Oh, excuse me. "The War of Northern Aggression."

West Virginia in the U.S. though I'm originally from Ohio (Ohio is a bit flatter) Don't have any pics but the Appalachia country side is quite a beautiful sight to see. I live in Morgantown though which is a college town and the bad thing about that is that there are lots of shitty college students during the school year (population doubles when students come into town for the school year ) There is still some interesting wild life around here though and such. Dare I post the Joni Mitchell song?

Oh hey lucretia , a neighbour! I need to go back and visit Norway some tome again soon, it's been a few years now. Such a beautiful country! One of my favorite countries to be honest. Perhaps beaten by Thailand, but still. Lovely place! Slightly embarrassing but I can't seem to recall where I last went.. Up north somewhere. Narvik perhaps? Basically went and had a pizza and went back to Sweden again so it wasn't the longest of visits. By the way, everything of yours is rather expensive! And yeah, lutefisk, or lutfisk as we call it is pretty common here as well, and it's really nice. I've grown up having it before Christmas just like you. My wife haven't tried it yet so I need to make that happen soon. Might need to plan a scenic road trip along some nice fjords in the future when our baby gets a bit older. At least old enough to appreciate it. Hello neighbour! Ah yes. Have been through Narvik several times. It's about a 3 hours drive from where I live. Have also been through Sweden some times, mostly with my family on camping trips during the summer when I was little. Skellefteå, Piteå, Luleå, Umeå, Jokkmokk. And later I have been some trips over the border to the towns Arjeplog and Arvidsjaur. Plan on a little trip through northern Sweden next year. Yes, it's expensive here... There's a reason many norwegians go to Sweden or Finland on shopping trips. It's simply too expensive for some. Sounds cool. Norway has lots of nice fjords, so should be plenty of places to choose from.

But nah, the only time I've attended a carol service at the abbey was years ago with my nan. It was the nine lessons and carols or something like that, it was very um, Christmassy. I liked it. But I'm always at the Christmas market, and Christmas light switch on though, especially when Nicolas flippin' Cage switched them on that one time. NICOLAS FLIPPIN' CAGE. Jaysus.

And i sometimes pop by in town to see the market but usually im on campus or train station.. I've heard a lot of good stuff about the carol service and that it is just a tad christmasy

I live in northern Virginia, the suburbs of Washington D.C. Some fun history: Back when America was being founded, they couldn't decide what city should be the capital. Some people thought it should be New York, because it was the biggest city, some said Boston, because it was the most important trading harbor, and a few people said Philadelphia, because they were from Philly and couldn't see how shit it was. However, they were afraid that if the capital was in a state, that state could control decisions by manipulating local laws or bribing congressmen (this actually did happen while Philadelphia was serving as temporary capital under the Articles of Confederation), so they included a clause in the Constitution saying that the capital would be under direct control of congress, and suddenly no one wanted to be the capital.
Meanwhile, the southern states were dragging their feet on accepting the Constitution at all. They had never been very keen on independence; their main export was tobacco, and their main buyers were British, so they were afraid that without colony status they would be passed over in favor of Caribbean tobacco. They eventually agreed to sign on in exchange for a capital in the south, but that posed a new problem. The only important city in the south was Atlanta, and that was too close for comfort to the Spanish and French colonies. Congress eventually decided to build a new city on the border of Maryland and Virginia. It was central to just about everything, the Potomac river was deep enough for trade barges but too shallow for warships, and the area wasn't populated yet, so the states had no problem giving it away. Then they got there and found out that the reason it was unpopulated was that it's a useless swamp where you can't grow anything and any big building sinks into the ground. Through much effort, they eventually managed to drain the Maryland side, but the Virginia side was so obstinate that they ended up just giving it back and acting like they never wanted it in the first place.
Then in the 1960s they finally realized that they had vastly underestimated the number of people it takes to make a city actually function, and they simply had no room left to build more housing. So people started moving into the north bit of Virginia (which still had nothing in it), and made a bunch of towns that all look kind of the same and don't have much to offer except some trees that turn pretty colors in the fall. But, despite the fact that this place has no real history and nothing interesting, it could be worse. I could live in Baltimore.
