I like SF. Babylon 5 tops the SF tv list. I also like ST TOS and the spin offs (didn't watch DS9 tho except for one ep), BSG TOS and Redux, SG1 and movies, Blake's 7.
For films: Metropolis, Blade Runner, 2001 A Space Odyessy, Alien, Aliens 2, Gattaca, Logan's Run, SW OT, not the prequels. I'd rather take STTCW the animated series (not the cartoon) over the prequels, Fifth Element, Planet of the Apes (the old version), Terminator 1 & 2, Robocop.

TV show : Dr Who, Farscape (Scorpiuuuuus ), BSG, firefly ~ Guys, I never saw Babylon 5 but I think it's on Netflix, should I give it a try ? There's also an old serie called Andromeda, was fun at first but the end... bwah... Also Falling sky could have been a great show but they totally messed up .... Movies : Aliens (nightmare childhood), Predators, Sunshine (I LOVE this one), Interstellar (well some characters are boring and speak too much but the black hole is amazing), Star Trek, Riddick movies (Picth Black is far my favourite though). I also love all the travelling time movies like Back to the Future or Terminator A serie you need to try (not sure you can count it as scifi TV show) especially if you like the 80' feeling, it's called "stranger things" on Netflix. I mean, it's like "the Goonies" mixed up with "Silent hill" XD

When I first read Sunshine's main plot I thought "wtf is this movie ?... looks bad.... " but it was from Danny Boyle and I also love "28 days later" so I had to try. My God ! the movie blew me away. So unique. And the OST AVP1 ! I have good memories about this one because I saw it with my brother and we laughed so hard sometimes XD fun to watch ~ I must say I'm very fond of the main Predator on AVP2 (I forgot his name). Stranger things, I loved the show. Certainly because the 80' reminds me of my childhood. Also the show has many various influences, it's sometimes funny to catch them ~

Guys, I never saw Babylon 5 but I think it's on Netflix, should I give it a try ? The beginning is slow. I'm not kidding. You have to start from the pilot The Gathering. The pace is slow and there's wooden acting. If you can get past this one, go on to season 1. The pace picked up a bit but there's still some wooden acting (which I've now come to understand why) but it laid more groundwork for the story. If you can last , season 2 is where the pace began to accelerate and onwards to 3 and 4 where all the fireworks rained in torrents. Kidding. Due to WB's refusal to grant the 5 year season contract, opting to renew at the end of each season, JMS (creator of B5) had to make changes to the 5 year arc he planned out. It's still a masterpiece imo. I've never seen the like. It will never be replicated. B5 caught my eye because I happened to catch the pilot back in '93. It was the Vorlon ship (smacked in zee face, I was amazed) that was so intriguing; organic, not the typical steel lines with bristling gun turrets. And Kosh. Well. I'd better say no more 'cause spoilers. I can only say I laughed and cried with the chars. It's the only SF tv series that brought tears to my eyes when it ended. I bide farewell to the universe and beloved chars with bitter sweetness. They had developed so much, so different from the beginning. Heroes died but they died not in vain.

Guys, I never saw Babylon 5 but I think it's on Netflix, should I give it a try ? Absolutely. It takes a little while to get really started, but when it does... No show does long-term plot arcs better, and that's because the arcs were all planned before the show even started (events are occasionally foreshadowed a full season or two before they happen). Also the character development is incredible, over the series you'll go from hating a character to loving them with lots of ups and downs in between, and it all makes sense.

Also the character development is incredible, over the series you'll go from hating a character to loving them with lots of ups and downs in between, and it all makes sense. Pretty much what Lemur said. For people hungry to get into the action I've recommended that they skip ahead and just watch episodes 13 and 22 of season 1, then watch everything from season 2 on. For people interested in seeing the character development, however, it's important to start from the beginning of season 1 -- which is the route I've taken with most people I've introduced to the series. The pilot is optional, as its events are summarized in the first season well enough, and it's so rough that JMS has effectively (if not literally) apologized for it, including issuing a reworked version (restored deleted scenes that provided important exposition and brought the graphics up to par with the rest of the series; I believe it's harder to find the original pilot now than the reissue, thankfully). As Lemur said, there are plot points planted in the pilot/early episodes that show their relevance much later in the series. J. Michael Straczynski wrote the overwhelming majority of the episodes, including all but 1.5 episodes of the last 3.5 seasons, with consultation from Harlan Ellison (those 1.5 episodes going to Harlan Ellison and Neil Gaiman). This gave the series a unity of vision that is nearly without parallel, particularly when you consider that JMS had mapped out all the major plot points from the start including major events extending for millennia in either direction beyond the show. So, in lieu of turning this into an essay, I'll finish by reiterating that yes, you should give it a try.

Babylon 5 (B5) is my all-time favourite sci-fi show. The CGI they used is dated (if you haven't seen this show and you're used to today's graphics, consider yourself warned) and seasons 1 and 5 are weak, but seasons 2-4 are excellent, as is the overall story. Most sci-fi I had seen prior to B5, if not all, had been episodic in nature, or had limited story arcs, while B5 had a continuous story (mostly). It was also darker than contemporary mainstream sci-fi and focused on the consequences of actions, which was something I found refreshing at the time. Rounding out a top 4 sci-fi series for me (top 4 because going to either 3 or 5 would require some difficult decisions) would be Firefly, Farscape, and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. If you're more familiar with these shows, I hope this gives you a sense of what my tastes are. Note: I intentionally excluded animated series for the sake of simplicity -- also, I've only seen a few and am open to suggestions. I just started Legend of the Galactic Heroes, though, so it may be a while before I get to anything else. People are talking about B5. PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT B5!!!!
Err... sorry... I mean B5 caught my eye because I happened to catch the pilot back in '93. I only discovered it last year around November. My friends got me a second HD for my laptop for my birthday (months prior) and they put B5 and Battlestar Galactica on there. Haven't gotten into the latter but the former I started watching just to have something on while I eat. I was pretty meh about it until Mind War- that episode had everything I want in sci-fi- transcendance, hints of vast and mysterious powers we can't hope to imagine or comprehend and some really great character work including the very first hint of G'Kar's humanity. Also Bester. But yeah Kosh, the Vorlons, the Shadows all of it. Amazing. And in case you didn't notice it did Mass Effect better than Mass Effect did a full 20 years earlier. Bioware should've really paid more attention to how they ended it instead of just skimming and ripping off paying homage to the Cole's Notes of it.

Babylon 5 (B5) is my all-time favourite sci-fi show. Ditto! Just finished rewatching it less than a week ago. Tried to get friends into it but, eh, I honestly don't think people in 2016 can watch it and take it as seriously as it was at the time. (Anyone here is free to prove me wrong though. ) *** Latest shows I've been watching are Stranger Things and Killjoys.

You guys who said V ...good shit guys, good shit. I was hoping someone would have brought up that show. The best mini-series I have ever seen is V: The Final Battle..... that was one of the series that got me into sci-fi. plus, those goddamn lizards with their voice box modulators reminded me of Garrus' voice. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Dalakaar, Killjoys...I have heard some things about it...what is the show about?
also... V, the re-imagined series showed promise up until season 2 ...morena baccarin did everything she could to keep that show going...I do like Laura Vandervoort as an actress as well.

Killjoys is a bit like Firefly in the sense of "grunge-era space". It's about a few Reclamation Agents, bounty hunters essentially. I also give it props for being a Canadian series with significantly less of a budget on it than most shows and doing well with what they have. The music is funky. It gets a laugh every so often and I'm curious about the overarching plotline. Is it great? Not really, moments yes. Is it good? Definitely.

Sheeeeeeeiiit I've got a lot.
Movies:
Pandorum. ALMOST Dead Space the movie but hella entertaining. This movie made me a huge Ben Foster fan. I loved the story surrounding it and the atmosphere. I really wish a sequel would get made.
Blade Runner: A damned classic. The movie to get me and probably millions of others into Cyberpunk. Excited for the upcoming sequel. Perhaps we'll get an answer to that question from the first. Rutger Hauer owns every scene he's in.
Riddick/Pitch Black: The movie to establish Vin Diesel as a SAVAGE. One of the most underrated movie series around. Newest one is one of the most manly movies made in America in a long ass time. Santana is fucking hilarious and scene stealing and Batista first showed he could hang with the big dogs as an actor as well. I like all 3 a lot but in terms of plot and scope Chronicles might be my favorite though Riddick is much more consistently entertaining. Can't wait to see Urban vs Diesel.
Star Wars:
Fuck the first 90% of Episode 1 and the first 50% of Episode II. I'll forever be a fan as long as Jedi and Sith are involved. The rest of the peons just take up screen time unless their name is Han Solo, Lando Calrissian, or Finn. Rogue 1 may have some of my favorite actors (Mads Mikkelson, Forest Whitaker) but to me it looks inconsequential and redundant given we've already gotten enough "just before Episode IV" prequels in Force Unleashed.
Star Trek:
New and old, though I haven't seen the newest one yet. In terms of series on the original and TNG caught my interest. I love the philosophical depth of the originals and the action of the newer ones (and yes, I think Cumberbatch is the better Khan, just doesn't have as much swagger as Montoya).
I'll probably add more as they come to me...
Series:
Defiance
Seriously, fuck you Sci Fi for cancelling it. It was a great show that had an outstanding cast and was far more interesting to me than any show they've had since MST3K. Became a big Tony Curran fan from this show cause Datak Tarr is a fuckin' G. At least it ended in a satisfying way.
Being Human (BBC)
Meh and the American version filled with more tokens than an X-MEN arcade cabinet in 1994. I'm talking about the original starring Lenora Crichlow, Aiden Turner, and Russell Tovey. GREAT acting, especially from Tovey and an awesome take on the vampire/werewolf/ghost angle. It sank a bit once the main cast completely changed as Han (the new vampire) carried the fuck out of that show when the originals left. Like the next mention, ended abruptly but at least the creator got to end it emphatically.
Penny Dreadful
This series is hella good. Top tier cast, top tier acting, and so much swagger from 3 of the main protagonists that it had to be ended prematurely. I love this show and it has my favorite intro theme EVER from such a series, it's so beautiful. The character acrs were amazing and the take on Frankenstein and Dorian Gray. I really wish it continued for one more season. Still some unanswered questions and open arcs that could easily be explanded. Not to mention a fight that never finished.
Again, more to come as I think of them.

There are so many shows / movies I would really like to dig a little further into with you guys from the past couple of lists...so many great things.. I need to find a way to better organize this stuff......Dark Angel...amazing show..was ahead of its time..not to mention it has / had a 20 year old jessica alba....They should re-boot that show... Oni, Defiance.. I am just as pissed about the canceling of it as you are...Defiance !!! my friend.

TV Shows: I don't watch that much Sci-Fi these days, but when I was a kid...X-Files Stranger Things Twilight Zone Red Dwarf Dr. Who Buck Rogers Space: 1999 6 Million Dollar Man Battlestar Galactica (old & new) Andromeda Star Trek Dark Angel Lexx V Outer Limits ... and probably a whole bunch I'm forgetting. Or trying to forget. *cough* Max Headroom *cough* I forgot to add X-Files (my daughter used to hide in her room when the music would start playing because it scared her). And how in the world did I not add Buck Rogers?! My dad used to make all sorts of fun of that show when I was watching and I did. not. care! lol Same with the Six Million Dollar Man and I was JUST thinking about Max Headroom like a week ago, how funny. Oh god... it's all coming back to me now. Knight Rider, Automan, Alien Nation, Quantum Leap... *hold me*
