Sorry, but that (i.e. the idea that people who dislike the game are young and inexperienced) is complete and utter nonsense. I like the game, and I doubt there will be even 1% of the board membership who have played computer games for as long as I have. People like games for all kinds of personal reasons, and that doesn't make them immature or lacking in judgement. Demographics totally come into play. If you can't see the flaws in this game and how the game itself is juvenile compared to Horizon, or Zelda, or Persona - basically it's AAA peers, you are a casual gamer. Women make up almost 50% of gamers. Studies have shown that they largely prefer mobile, candy crush-style games. Men predominantly play shooters. Specifically the 18-35 demographic. Andromeda ramps up the focus on pew pew bang bang to better engage this crowd. Ohhhh...people who like this game are "casuals"! So glad to see that particular epithet made it to the ME universe too, what would we do without it. There's several people who posted here already that are far above the age of 35...but thanks for labelling anyone who disagrees with your position so clearly, it defines you very nicely for us.

Say what you want about Fallout 4, but at least that game matured with its audience; you played as a parent who was searching for his/her son. I turned 35 this year and even though I'm not a dad, I could still relate to the idea of searching a wasteland - even if it meant death - to find my little boy. Mass Effect came out a decade ago and those of us who were there in the beginning are grown men & women now... Yet Bioware decided to give us a main character who is only 22 years-old; a child leading the races of The Milky Way on a mission to find a new planet to live on is absolutely ridiculous (especially for a series that used to be rooted in reality). We should be playing as the Parent who brought their twin children to a new galaxy -- and the twins should have been party members...it would have been amazing to bring your kids along with you on missions (imagine the banter). Bioware missed an opportunity to do something truly unique...which is an unfortunate theme for this entire game. Yet you 19 in Fallout 3 and it's considered the better game by many Neither's as good as New Vegas, tbh.

The Warden is in their early 20's, atleast if you play Human or any type of Elf. Alistair is aswell, and somehow you save Ferelden and even Thedas, yet no one complains about that.

That's because they're not written like teenagers and didn't make goofy faces. I didn't cringe everytime they opened their well-animated mouths.

My twin and I still get referred to as "the boys" by our father, and we're going to be 34 this year.
Some people grow up fast. Ryder seems like a mature 22 year old.

How old was Shepard at the beginning of ME1? My memory doesn't go back that far, due to how old I am Shepard's birthday was April 11, 2154. 27 29 as of ME1 The Ryder twins were born in 2163, making them 22 (not accounting for time in stasis) in MEA FTFY. Apparently, Shep celebrated her 30th birthday with a rebirth. She spent the day in her "meat and tubes" stage. Say what you want about Fallout 4, but at least that game matured with its audience; you played as a parent who was searching for his/her son. I turned 35 this year and even though I'm not a dad, I could still relate to the idea of searching a wasteland - even if it meant death - to find my little boy. Yeah, that's one of the reasons I still haven't played the game. It restricts the type of character you can play to someone who would have a child in a heteronormative relationship. Bleah.

The story line very much follows some of the more cringe worthy YA fiction books out there. I get it though, they are appealing to people in that age category.

That's because in medieval times you were a man at 14. Alexander the Great, conquered the known world by the time he was 25. That's a bit different than today, or what we'd consider in the future. Pretty sure there hasn't been a single US Astronaut who wasn't in their 30's, 40's, or 50's. Also, in DA you become the "Chosen One" , like most fantasy stories. Very different concepts.

And of course, Shepard being around 33 just adds to the Messianic image.

Never read those so I don't really know the story line, but mostly any YA Fiction where you have teenagers to young adults saving the world. Sometimes the authors put in a good effort creating their "chosen one" so that the story works well, but a lot of them don't.

I had no idea Ryder was 22 until someone told me, I would have guessed around 30 given the dialogue and all, and well... the character I could make from the creator didn't look very 22 either lol.
I prefer to think of him as 30.

I'm a little tired of the kid that becomes an adult and saves the world myself. Those that have been around for a little while longer often aren't the target audience it seems. It goes hand in hand with immature writing I suppose... Weird, I'm 52 and I have zero issues with Ryder being a youngish person. I guess it goes hand in hand with the idea that gaming keeps me young. Mmm, that's not so weird, everyone has different tastes.

Can we have a less stupid thread title, please? (I think the OP can edit the title himself without waiting for a mod.) A 22-year-old isn't a teenager. I'm old enough to be a 22 year olds father. That makes them kids to me. its all relative, kid. the Ryder twins are kids who grow up fast. alec looks more like their grandpa than dad

I don't see a problem with the protagonists being young. That was the point of Andromeda. Shepard's story took a hero and made him/her into a legend. This story was to take someone and turn him/her into a hero. It's part of that feeling of exploration, or everything feeling new. New galaxy, new aliens, and a protagonist that is new at being in charge, being in danger, etc. Untested, not confident, thrust into a situation he/she is not prepared for. I thought it was a great way to lighten the tone from the supremely dark ME3.
I understand that people will always want to be able to project themselves into the PC in an RPG. However, that is just not always possible. And at least for people who are older they can at least relate to having been young at one point. It's maybe not ideal, but some RPG's don't allow any kind of change of the PC in terms of age, and some not even in terms of gender or appearance! Would it be nice if every option that a person wanted could be represented? Sure. But demographics matter when selling games. And there are great games like Uncharted and Tomb Raider and TW3 and HZD and others that don't allow a single bit of player customization.
I don't think the story is geared toward teens per say. It has it's darker moments and adult themes, and while it does have its lighter moments and tone, that doesn't necessarily make it immature or "for teens".

22 ain't a kid. Why do so many people have issues with a younger protagonist anyway? They are only 7 years younger than Shepard was in ME1.

I would like to add some levity to this conversation as I'm 22. In high school I had no plans for life and thusly spent 18-21 trying to find out what I'm doing with my life. Finally, I just woke up one day and decided to educate myself and get into the field I really wanted. Ryder in comparison has his/her's shit figured out. Not only were they military (I'm assuming they joined as soon as they could) they decided to go on a one way trip with a bunch of unknowns with a lot of responsibility to go with it. I haven't met many 22 year olds that can do that, hell, I haven't met many 30 year olds who could do that! Maturity isn't tied to age like many think.

The age doesn't get mentioned in the game. So make him/her 25 in your head if you want to.
Furthermore saying that everyone who is 22 is a kid, is absolutely absurd. Some people grow up faster. I was already very major for my age at 16. Not because I wanted to be, it's just the way I am.
Some other people will still be 22, when they are 50 years old and never grow up.
Live is complicated and you can't generalize everything. The OP at the age of 32 should know that.
