Right. That's a problem with CRPGs. ME2's approach was pretty good, except that it let you do any number of missions before doing Reaper IFF.

I would like open worlds to continue like this for the next MEA but ONLY side planets. I want the next game to be exactly like how they did it with mass effect 1, you have main story worlds, like noveria and feros where you do main story missions and you have side story planets with side content. Main story content shouldn't touch or mingle with side missions so people can either do side content for addition story or they can touch main content and just main content, never gotta touch the other stuff, this makes it less overwhelming. I lot of people are overwhelmed by the content, even if you can just do main missions, you have tasks all over the place, it just feels "let's get this over with" feeling. That could be a very interesting way to do it. That's make all the open-world stuff fully optional, so people wanting a linear story would be able to ignore the side stuff. What about loyalty/companion quests? Unique areas like Liam's could be very fun. That's why I liked Jack's loyalty mission so much. It was totally unique. Liam's mission were great and all the loyalty missions imo, and companion missions can be classified as "main priority". Mass Effect Andromeda does a good job in showing what the priorities are with the journal: Assignments and allies, this is a much improved over Inquisition but those tasks clog the open world especially when you mix it with main missions, one of the reasons I think the prologue should have been more linear. Bioware should make worlds which show Main priority and worlds that show Secondary priority, let the player know that they are entirely optional. Secondary quests usually make no difference in the end. Look at Witcher 3, none of my secondary quests made any impact on the end, it was almost self contained stories in themselves, maybe in the sequels they touch up on it, just like mass effect 1 towards 2. This I think is the better option. People who like a linear progression, they can do main priority missions. Those who wish to explore and get spammed with missions on the map can go to secondary planets. Also I only realized now that there isn't any gating for Mass Effect Andromeda, no power and no levels on enemies, they should continue this for dragon age too. Good change that.

I would disagree. The best parts of Andromeda and Witcher 3 would be the freedom parts of just exploring and coming across random events or quests. And the open world aspects make sense in Mass Effect Andromeda rather than ME3 because we are a pathfinder with exploration, discovery, and problem solving being the major pillars in this game's design. So if we removed the quests and the narrative from these games entirely, you think they would still be fun? Just walking around a forest and happening upon a a group of monsters is quite possibly the least compelling part of The Witcher 3 along with it's unnecessary loot and crafting. I might boot up Just Cause 2 or Skyrim specifically with the intent to tool around and nothing else. However, if I jump into The Witcher without a quest, it all feels aimless and mundane. More importantly, exploration need not happen exclusively at large scale. The most rewarding exploration I've had in a game is quite possibly within Gone Home, where I could observe the intricacies of this lovingly crafted vignette of a 90s family. There's nothing inherent to an open world that improves upon exploration; it mainly just transfers the navigation of detail to the navigation of scale, and there's no reason that a more condensed hub couldn't portray the sense of scale about as well as an open world all while eschewing the more repetitive aspects of open world games. Well yeah you need some sort of story or quests. But in both Witcher 3 and MEA, you can just go explore and happen upon a quest. That quest happens organically without the game forcing you to do that. Having the freedom to play the game as you will with good stories is very different from have a glorified interactive movie. It's all about balance. Just cause is a fun game bc of the gameplay even though it has crap stories. Skyrim also has great stories but the fun part of the game is the RPG aspects. Uncharted is a great experience albeit short with barely any replay value because of the rails it's on to deliever a great interactive narrative. Mass Effect needs to fall somewhere in between. I honestly really don't like playing ME2 or ME3 because once I beat the story, that's it. Game over. I just invested all these skill points into a character and now I have to start all over. Having the open world aspect, I can continue to play with my leveled up character for much longer and eventually do all the open world stuff again in new game plus. I'm hoping the dlc will add more to the open world aspect to completely overhaul the events we can interact with. I would really like to have bounties and new mission types (also involving the Nomad in new ways) given to us from our established colonies.

I prefer non-open world game focused on story and characters. I love andromeda but it's lacking compared to ME2 and 3.

I don't get it. If ME:A shows anything, it is that open world and corridor-shooter with hubs can co-exist.
It's not like in DA:I where you have to do some side quest and close rifts to continue the main story. If you only focused on the main storyline and loyalty mission, it is just one quest after another, no exploration is required, just some driving around and flying around, and it has enough contents comparing to previous games.
Also the side quest in ME:A is much better comparing to DA:I, every planet has several side quests that has cut scenes and storyline. Sure there are some "go there scan that kill these.", but every open world has that, including the Witcher 3. There are tons of quest in Witcher 3 is just "go there , witcher sense this and kill the monster".

To be honest, I'd rather the main quest not be linear. Bioware is better at linear than open world. You could see this going back to ME1 which had both. DAO was big linear, ME 2 was linear as was ME 3. Even with DAI the best stuff is linear. And I would disagree. First, the best parts of ME1 were the non-linear bits. And ME2 and ME3 were both just awful RPGs. Moreover, I think the average quality of BioWare's games was higher pre-ME, when the games were just less linear overall (except JE).

Corridor shooter with hubs, FOR SURE!!!! MEA is already a corridor shooter with hubs to some extent. You do have to do some of the open world stuff, but many of the quests are corridor shooters. I could be wrong, but I would guess that, in terms of time played MEA contains not far of as much corridor shooter game play as each of the trilogy contained on release. ME3, for example, had about 30 proper missions, and I would guess that there are 20+ corridor shooter quests in MEA.
