So, exploring that humongous game, HoI4, I discovered another little button a couple of days ago. "air group"
Well, I was mostly interested in if it makes air power more effective somehow? It doesn't. Just provides another mechanism for grouping air wings together, besides bases or tying them to armies. Could perhaps be of some use if one does it from the start and throughout the game. You still has to micromanage the wings, but at least you can call up the entire group that you want to do something with, instead of looking through them all.
Land war suddenly started to go well. So well that I now have the problem of a too long front, thinning my forces. Moskva seemed tantalizingly in reach, but alas, more enemy divisions materialized and I have to secure my front. I have two armies in Ukraine and Caucasus. Despite also having help from allies, USA and Turkey mainly, that is not enough. I would like a third army. Unfortunately I can't scrape it together. But Germany seems to have started to collapse. Frontlines are also moving in Balkan, Italy is liberated and USA holds almost the entire German north coast. But I have run out of primarily armor, light tanks, medium tanks - I'm using old, obsolete models as replacements for combat losses and I have a deficit in armored transports and anti-tank cannons.
Well, I have some ideas. I have 2000 strategic bombers and lots of attack aircraft and fighters. I'm going to deploy those to Ukraine and start bombing Romania and German Russia. Air power doesn't do much, but it will probably get Germany to allocate more resources to fighters.
My land forces running over some coastal cities, in Yugoslavia and Ukraine, Odessa for instance, forced the enemies' fleets out to play. Unfortunately for the enemy, those fleets were manned by completely green crews. Mine were manned by hardcore veterans. Also my fleets were much better organized. The enemy battleships were not accompanied by many destroyers. Most of those were in a different harbor. Basically they were just running away from the harbor. The bloodbath was glorious. I said before I thought there were at least 2, probably more battleships left. Well, the Italians had been really busy. Lots of modern (stage III) battleships. I think they should have built more destroyers. Then maybe my victory would have cost more. One Aircraft Carrier. Fifteen! - 15 - Battleships! 8 Heavy Cruisers. 12 Light Cruisers. 63 Destroyers. 61 Submarines. I lost only one single Destroyer. That hurt of course, but I can't complain about the tradeoff.
They still have harbors left in Yugoslavia and Romania. ...Wonder what hides there?
The old ships that you start with as UK are really useful. Take good care and upgrade at the right moment. My HMS Queen Elisabeth, a WW1 BB, has a heavy attack value of 77, as designed after my final upgrade. But with the death skull veteran crew, that heavy attack rises to 130!! Which makes that old bucket the most powerful ship in my navy. More than my SuperBattleship Britannia will have, when she's ready, ca 120. Queen Elisabeth has sunk no less than 6 enemy battleships in her career! ...So far. For comparison, the starting Queen Elisabeth has a heavy attack of 39.2.
You get 12 old Battleships and three old Battlecruisers when you start as Britain. It takes many years and lots of steel to build another 10, so you really have to get as much milage as possible from those old ships.

Still no TV. A technician contacted me this morning, saying he was on it, and that he would contact me again. Then nothing.
I'm wary of overdosing on HoI4. I'm gonna impose a 2 hour a day limit on myself, and sit down with a novel instead.
But things are going well. 2 armies can make do in Russia. I've battled by hand, micro managed the divisions and thus encircled and snuffed out a great number of German, Finnish, Romanian divisions, making my frontlines rather empty. I've taken Moskva, and much more. Turns out Germany has built the full complement of factories in every Ukrainian & Russian province. Those now fell to me and eradicated my armor deficit, while Germany should start feeling the lack. Maybe I'll win this HoI4 game, ...for the first time... barring it gets unloadable after a patch again. Yugoslavia has capitulated, but there are complications. Germany holds on to part of Yugoslavia and has a corridor to Romania. Austria does not participate in the war, but is giving free access to German forces. Which means that the long border to Austria must be held and that ties up a lot of forces. I have an army in Yugoslavia and that is pretty unable to do anything at the moment.
Now I'll put on some music and get on with Northcote Parkinson and a Napoleonic wars sea novel.

Okay, I did win. And not long after. Germany collapsed, and then Romania.
I need to stop building ships. I almost have a 1000 ship navy, and they take too much manpower. I also disbanded some air wings, to free up personnel.
And then Kwantung Empire attacked. It's sort of annoying news, since I don't have troops along that border - though they're on their way. Worse is Indochina, which is already being run down by Kwantung. I only have some Malayan troops there, lean divisions. And it will take forever to get forces there, if I had any spare. ...I think I'll just leave it to divert Kwantung, and advance straight through Siberia and roll up Kwantung, similar process as I used with Germany.
But some other day.
Because the TV works now. Already saw a good movie. They're not common these days.

HoI4 Another enemy, another war. I was caught out hanging a bit, as I tried to recover and rebuild. My ships were queueing in the shipyards for upgrades, and I had not built infrastructure and supply lines through eastern Caucasus yet. The navy still came through. 3 Battleships, 18 Heavy Cruisers, 28 Light Cruisers, 58 Destroyers and 1193 transport ships sunk in hundreds of battles in just two months. My Britain only lost 2 Destroyers. I can live with that exchange.
Japanese ships. So Kwantung is apparently some Japanese started Chinese empire project. So Yamamoto and Musashi probably hides in some harbor.
I sent Montgomery to Indochina with ten divisions I managed to scrape together somehow. He hasn't arrived yet, but seems keen and optimistic. The Kwantung Japanese managed to cut off my railroad from India - Burma, but we'll deal with that later. Let's start in Saigon and go North. The Malayan 'lean' divisions do a good job of holding the line as they are forced to retreat. Kwantung has only taken a third, and Monty's transport ships are close now.
At the long front in Caucasus I have 3 armies and 72 divisions. As soon as they are properly supplied they will get order to advance.

I spent 5 hours with banks today. Not actually talking to them. That was probably just an hour or about, ...even less perhaps. But preparing papers, travelling and waiting. ...And, okay, lunch.
Then it's painting day tomorrow, so I had to remove old painting from the Bamboo easel I stretch paper on, and stretch a new one, scary, empty white paper... I'll have people watching me tomorrow and I haven't even decided what to paint 😧
Long tough day, I'll suppose I'll do some HoI4 now.

So I probably did win this HoI4 game. Kwantung capitulated and no one has attacked me since. There is a lack of credible candidates, maybe communist russia, but I only left them the poorer parts of old russia/Kwantung, northern and eastern, so they'll be poor.
In the lull of peace, which has lasted for a good while, I've been building infrastructure, railroads and stuff, modernized my divisions and ships.
All thing considered, I think this long game has been the most fun and rewarding one so far. I noticed it was fun to play Britain, so I kept doing it and learned from each game. I will probably play Britain again, next time.

After many many years of brushing my teeth the same way I have recently changed to a new method that may be worse, better or more likely be no different at all. Next check up I intend to ask my dentist though.
My regular method for years was to wet the tooth brush bristles, put toothpaste on the tooth brush and brush away.
Now however I wet the bristles, but then put a dab of toothpaste on the tip of my tongue. I move my tongue around all over my teeth inside and out, all over to get a bit of a layer of toothpaste on all teeth. I then brush. At the end I feel I have had a better overall coating of toothpaste on all teeth and my mouth feels fresher afterwards after the spit and rinse.
And least you think this is just another Eccentric Beerfish thing........well maybe it is.

HoI4: Reflections and observations. After I purchased HoI4 a very long time ago, I hardly played it. A couple of attempts between many months of abandonments. It was a monster to learn to play (and I still haven't done that, but I'm starting to question if that is even the point?), and there were also so much that really annoyed me about the game.
But, something drew me back to try again, ...and try again. And it's apparently starting to fascinate me.
This last time, I played my game intensely enough to "finish" (sort of) the game before Paradox made the savegame incompatible with a patch. And that's a first. But both that and the accumulated experience made me imagine I had come to some sorts of understandings. Disclaimer: This is a software toy more than a "game" and the experience changes depending on how you play it and as what. My experience is mainly based on playing UK, because that is what I've done the last three times and got the most milage from, and playing it on modest difficulty levels. Still:
Much of what I tried to learn on internet, on how to play, was not quite right. Some of that is because of patches that has changed some things.
Civilian Factories is also for warfare and for winning wars. More so now that logistics have changed with the inclusion of building railroads. You need to build supply lines behind your troops, and behind your allies' troops sometimes too. Harbors, infrastructure, railroads, supply depots. I have never converted a civilian factory to a military factory.
Air power doesn't seem to affect land warfare much. But it does affect your Victory Score points, and those are used in the occasional peace negotiations and peace treaties. So there's still a reason to do well enough. And you do need to protect your country with interceptors, or you'll be repairing infrastructure all the time. Most effect though, air has on sea warfare. Naval Bombers are effective, and so are Carriers. An absurd detail is that 'air superiority' mission counters fighters, but 'intercept' does not. One result is that you have to protect your interceptors with other fighters on 'air superiority' mission. Aircraft probably need to have 100% reliability. I haven't tested that yet, will do next game. But it's impossible to keep the proficiency of your aircrew up with 88% or 96%.
So units can be trained from 'green' to 'trained' and then to 'regular'. Only combat experience alone, then leads to 'seasoned' and 'veteran'. The proficiency of the military units has a big impact on combat. However, with losses or damage, the proficiency then becomes diluted with green additions, during reinforcements or repairs. This doesn't work in a balanced way for air, land and navy. It's in my experience impossible to keep an air wing even at 'regular'. They drop back to 'trained' and then even 'green'. Similarly, it's hard to reach 'seasoned' with land units. They're more prone to drop down to 'trained'. Ships otoh, I do get to both 'seasoned' and 'veteran'. Not much problem. Next time I'll try having reliability of planes and vehicles at 100%, and see if that makes any difference.
Playing a power depending upon its Navy, like UK, USA or Japan, you cannot afford more than trivial losses, or you're f**. Seriously. You need to take very good care of your old ships and stay on top. The reason is that it takes forever to build - and thus replace - big ships like Carriers, Battleships, Battlecruisers, Heavy Cruisers. ...And you will always have a lack of destroyers. Starting a UK game at 1936, you have 12 obsolete battleships and 7 carriers, 5 of them rebuilt from cruisers and battlecruisers. I have continued the last game until 1959, 23 years, and have built lots of shipyards and taken most of the steel in the entire world, I still haven't built more than 21 additional battleships and 23 additional carriers. How many do you think were ready by 1945? Take care of your old ships. You need them.
Try to preserve your fleet and progressively whittle down the opponent, until you have complete supremacy. A key to this is to have a healthy screen in your 'Strike Fleets'. Count the number of cruisers, heavy and light, and multiply by at least 4, to get a proper number of destroyers. Like a Carrier strike force with one carrier, could be like 1 CV, 2 BB, 2 CA, 3 CL, 20 DD. See why you'll always lack destroyers? If you build a small strike force, for use somewhere where real opposition is not expected, 3 is good enough as multiplier, example 1 BC, 1 CA, 1 CL, 6 DD. You then need 'Patrol Forces'. A small such is composed of one light cruiser and six destroyers. It's important that the light cruisers are equipped with aircraft and catapults from the start, first upgrade, and get radar and sonar on the ships asap. Because this will somewhat help to keep them out of harms way, since you will set them, all your task forces, to be cowards. "only engage at low risk". A patrol force can also be reassigned for convoy escort, though the need should not appear if you keep your navy strong and dominant. You'll sink enemies before they can attack your convoys.
Destroyers only have two slots for 'fire control', 'sonar' and 'radar'. After the last patch, the best choice seem to be 'sonar' and 'radar' for patrol destroyers and 'fire control' and 'radar' for screen destroyers. However, you'll need both patrol and screen destroyers in both strike forces and patrol forces, just different quantities.
And do use submarines, a lot of them. Squadrons of 10 on convoy interdiction.
Another reason you cannot sustain losses, if you depend upon a big navy, besides it takes a lot of time building replacements, reinforcements, is steel. As you build enough ship yards, you'll discover you cannot find enough steel. So be careful with your old ships. With their crew experience they will be as good as new ships if you upgrade them. You can easily upgrade everything multiple times except armor, engines and main armament. Upgrading those things is normally not worth it as it costs almost as much as a new ship. ...However, putting a third main turret on your old BBs is sort of doable and later in the game, at some point it's necessary, and may also need an engine upgrade to keep speed above 20 knots. It will cost time, but not steel.

Had two more Meniere's attacks this week and a boat load last week...so my GP has made an appointment for me to see another ENT (I don't want to because of how other 'specialists' have treated me in the past....I have to say, I'm very stressed about this appointment for that reason). But I will try to give this one the benefit.

Had to give a call to screwfix customer service and they promised that the thing is on the way and should arrive tomorrow morning. Hopefully is it true and i not gonna get in trouble with my boss.

Eshops can be good or lousy. Bol is the largest in my country. I think that one has the best service. Here is why...
I needed a tub, because the filter of my washing machine needed cleaning and a square tub should work better than a bucket to catch the water when removing the filter. It should be delivered the next day in the evening. The postal service has a track and trace, so at the indicated time, I was on the lookout for the van. I saw it, but he didn't stop at all. A few seconds later, I got a message that it will be delivered to a local post office, several kilometers away. So, I was annoyed and complained to the postal service and to the eshop. The eshop orded a replacement product free of charge and they refunded the money of the first one. However, the same thing happened with the replacement product. This time I got a message that it was delivered. I was smart and photographed the delivery truck, which proved my point. The customer service of the post was horrible and came with nonsense solutions (like wait two days and blablabla). So I contacted the customer service of the eshop, who contacted the postal service. And by magic, a few minutes later the doorbell rang. The delivery guy was ordered to drive back and deliver the package.
So now I am officially a fan from that eshop. And I got that tub for free.

Against much better judgement - I actually try to avoid sugar - I ate an entire pack of cookies while having coffee and reading a book. Regretting it as I did it, but unable to stop, like a dam drug addict. I think I may have skimped a bit on breakfast and lunch and maybe had some low blood sugar? I think that might have been it because I was also cold and freezing. And I regretted it afterwards, because of course I didn't feel well for many hours.

Ive been there. Ive done the same thing, except not with cookies...for me, it's crackers. And I generally dont eat well. Not that I dont eat healthy ( I do. I dont eat fast food like pizza or mcdonalds) but I generally only eat once....MAYBE twice a day, and the portion size is rather small.
Gone are my days of eating two sandwiches...now I usually only eat a half, and on rare occasions 1 whole one.

Decisions, decisions. Do I start a new HoI4 game as UK again, or as USA? Or do I buy Baldur's Gate III?

Well, I couldn't buy Baldur's Gate III, because I have a new bank card and my bank doesn't like Pay Pal any longer. It's probably fixable, but nothing new. There are a lot of stories around, from vendors and others, but there's no point in me recounting things I know nothing about.
So I was left to HoI4 again. This time I found a page of custom settings for the game, and I now understand how higher proficiency levels are reached by air wings and army divisions. You buff their experience gain. I'm not sure I want to do that, because I've played with zero buffs for all nations before, and this would make it impossible for me to compare things to previous gameplays. On the other hand, one could make different nations perform more in line with historical WW2 performance? Well, I did it. <Brrr> Will Germany be unbeatable now? Crack Waffen SS schwere panzer divisions? Those were beaten irl by air power, but air power has hardly any effect on ground forces in HoI4. I'll have less problems with Italy and Soviet though.

Finally, after about 20 months there was a date planned for a surgery to close my stomach wound. The hospital called me that the surgery of the 20th of February may be delayed, because of an emergency surgery of another patient. They will inform me on the 19th about a final date. I understand that my condition is not life threatening, but I still wish it will be over soon.

Had yet another Meniere's attack today during a staff meeting in front of my Supervisor and a room full of colleagues...Ears exploded and it came on with such force that I almost.completely fell over. Luckily my Super was there to catch me and stop me from falling.
Later, Went to my Dr appointment today to flush out my ears, hoping that would help relieve some of the symptoms...and as Nurse Hottie is flushing my ears, and especially after she finished the left side...I was hit with vertigo so hard I yacked and nearly fell off the table! I didnt have any sense of balance or direction whatsoever. She turned back from the sink just in time to stop me from falling off the bed/table and hitting the floor.
She cleaned up....then continued doing my right ear...only to have the same thing happen!
She cleaned up the floor again and went to get chnaged into clean scrubs...But had me lie down on the bed.
I hate having my ears flushed!

I forgot to harass my bank today, so still no PayPal and still no Baldur's Gate III.
So I settled down with HoI4 again <sigh>
So I started a new HoI4 game. And I buffed nations as I saw fit, to reflect their WW2 performance. ...Which I regret, because now I cannot compare how my strategy/tactics work. Anyway, I started 1936 as usual and am at end of 1938. Germany and Soviet have got rid of Hitler and Stalin in civil wars, but stayed fascists and communist. Franco lost the Spanish civil war and Spain has gone full communist. Which is bad news for my Gibraltar. France is still democrat, but will probably go communist. I've supported democrats in France previously, but it doesn't matter because 'someone', prob. Soviet, sponsors a coup sooner or later. Not going to waste the resources this time.
Even with zero buffs, Germany was always a very hard nut to crack, their divisions “never” folding. -What have I done?
Japan is stomping all over China in WW2'esque fashion. They haven't done that much in my previous UK games. Last time was my single US game, which I abandoned in disgust when Japan sunk all my ships. I had no clue about playing navy back then. Mexico is having a civil war, but it seems the democrats are winning for once, so maybe I won't be involved in wars in the West Indies?
I have focused entirely on upgrading my ships, building only infrastructure, civilian factories and shipyards. I usually get an Ark Royal class carrier in the early game, but not this time as I canceled the build. I'm trying to make the upgrades as effective but cheap as possible. Which mostly means just filling the empty slots. Later, they will get upgraded with new technology, for now just lets get them in fighting shape. Some sonar, anti-air and torpedoes for destroyers, aircraft catapults and radar for light cruisers. I'm done will all the destroyers and most light cruisers. Soon I'll have researched better radar and fire control which will go on the heavy cruisers. Hopefully I will not suffer the same kind of early losses as in my last UK game (Oh why did I buff Germany?)
I've discovered I have too few submarines. I've never really seen that as a problem before, the destroyer situation always being desperate. Problem is I don't like the 1936 submarine hull. I was going to wait until the 1940, but maybe that is unrealistic. Submarines are necessary for defending both Britain, Malta and Singapore from amphibious invasions, but they do all over good stuff, hampering the enemies throughout the games.
