Well, latest session of HoI4 has been,.. different. I'm at end of 1940, and I'm untouched by war. Formally, I was on the side of democrat Mexico in their civil war. But I only had some destroyers and subs patrolling the coasts. Mexico wrapped up that neatly themselves. Italy not being so strong help for the junta may have something to do with it. Italy have pretty much collapsed with their own ambitions (just like irl, only Hitler is gone and can't help them). I was sort of preparing for them to be a nuisance in North Africa, but that never happened. They broke themselves already in Balkan. France is democrat again (how did that happen?) and have joined my UK in an alliance (they briefly joined Soviet before). We have USA with us too, so this looks like an easy game? (I've only managed to become allied with USA this and the last time, playing as UK. That's how strange this game can be.) ... I may have reinforced my Mediterranean fleet command too much, Italy not being its usual self. Maybe I'll need that stuff in the Far East? Against Japan? Which is rolling along like a steamroller, wrecking civilizations and complicating things all over poor China. I spent an awful lot of time and political points, trying to patch together and revive the Empire. But I failed so completely that I'm surprised the path option even exists, as I'm dubious it's possible. Oh, well. I have excellent relations with Germany. Even so, they seem to be planning a war against me? HoI4 Germany is like that. Fascist, democrat, socialist or imperial doesn't matter. 🤔 They will go to war. My Royal Navy is in tremendous shape, top notch, after I went all-in on naval preparations like I've never done before. Armies and Air force, ...eeh, not so much. Italy and Soviet being not so powerful as usually has definitely impacted the game's progress. Now, what will happen with Germany and Japan being more powerful than normally?

So the answers are in. It was a very bad idea to buff Germany and Japan. Japan sent a giant navy strike force, that was twice as large as my two strike forces combined, to my Singapore, took one look at my strike forces and turned around and fled? Couple of months later, it came back, like five times as big! It had more cruisers than I have destroyers, like around just short of hundred. While I'm curious about how the AI Japan could possibly know how well equipped and trained my ships were - it fled the first time -, I'm not curious about how badly my fleets would be pulverized. I hit all disengage buttons, still lost 11 destroyers that I'm not able to replace. Meanwhile, Germany rolled down through Netherland, Belgium and France, wiping out - not driving out, defeating, but killing - all American armies, some 80 divisions! And some 30 Soviet divisions (allied with France)! Can't be replaced either. All while simultaneously exterminating Poland at the other end. ... I think this game is done. Is there any point in trying?

...And oh yeah, there's been a landing on the Moon today. By a NASA sponsored, private American company, Intuitive Machines. IM-1. It hitched a ride with a SpaceX Falcon9 for most of the trip, then did the Moon part itself. Selecting the landing spot and landing was done independently by onboard AI.
And actually, this is the first time USA lands on the Moon again, since the Apollo project, 55 years ago.

I figured the HoI4 game was screwed anyway so I figured I had nothing to lose and could try harder by taking bigger risks. So I sent both of my Mediterranean Strike forces and one of my home fleets to Singapore.
They actually got a grip on the Japanese fleet, but nothing more. Despite heavy damage, I could see the Japanese Carriers and Battleships go down to 27-40% strength, they didn't sink much. They managed to escape. And so it continued. Most of their ships is probably in repair now, but they have split their force in smaller fleets that do some kind of hit and run tactics, and they manage to escape every time. I'm going to see if any doctrines can offer some help, but beyond that I don't know.
Meanwhile I have some big problems in Africa that will take a ton of boring work to fix. Germany inherited French colonies and French forces and are now attacking.
...So I don't know...
Oh, and yeah, Soviet is now allied with Germany and Japan,.. Of course it is.

Deleted the latest HoI4 UK game started a new one. I'd gladly experiment to find out WTH is going on with the Japanese navy, but I'm not doing that wile I micromanage battles with French-German-Soviet forces on a dozen fronts spread out over Africa. It's just too much hard work for too little fun. So... Back to 1936, and no buffs for Germany and Japan this time. P.S. <cough> okay, okay, I might have buffed them again, just a little...

I had a good day today; No Meniere's attacks since Friday, but I also found some really cool ASL/Deaf-HoH-themed sweatshirts on both Amazon and Etsy...I've been looking for things like that for years and have never seen any so when I found these I obliterated the "BUY NOW" button and flogged by credit card.
Ah, retail therapy.

Good grief, charities are going over the top in the things they send you to try and get you to donate.
This latest package they sent me:
- A happy face mini sponge, I have no idea what one would use this for? - A hard plastic square about 2 inches per side, no clue what this is for? Maybe wind shield scraper? - A small phone note pad, these I use a lot and are handy. - A pen, cheap pens but I use them a lot. - A vinyl shopping tote bag, these I use.
A few charities i contribute to through out the year but my main donations I all make at one time once a year in December.
But once your name is on a giving list you get sent this kind of packages all he time from all sorts of charities.
Has zero effect on my contributions (timing or amount) but must work for them

It looks like my surgery is planned for tomorrow morning at 8AM and I have to be there at 7AM (my time). I am nervous, because the 4 hour surgery determines whether or not I can get rid of the nurses, who treat my wound at home every two days. They are friendly, but I rather have my freedom back. I have that wound for about 20 months now. It is time that it gets closed.

I have that wound for about 20 months now. It is time that it gets closed. Good luck AFW! It should be fine, nerves are very understandable due to what you went through but lady luck will be sitting on your shoulder tomorrow . Thank you! Another unrelated problem. My washing machine was leaking. And it was very hard to get an appointment for a repair. So, the technician finally came today after 16 days. In the meantime I had to order towels, because I need one or two towels daily and I ran out. It turns out that the machine was fine, but the drain was clogged, so it overflowed. The plumber couldn't come today, so he will be here tomorrow afternoon. Slight problem with that, I am still unconscious at that time. I hope that a friend, who has the keys of my home, can open the door for the plumber. Because the washing machine is in its own room, which is also used for storage, I had to make room for the technician/plumber. Now my living room is full of the laundry of 16 days, buckets, brooms, detergents, fabric softeners, toilet cleaners, an ironing board, an iron, etc. At the same time my cleaner came today, so he had to work around that. So I had to dump all that stuff in the shower, so he could clean the floor and then back to the living room. I need the shower again when the nurse arrives at 5PM, because I need to shower half an hour before that. Chaos. Usually the nurse comes very early in the morning, but she cannot be here tomorrow morning at 5 or 6AM (obviously), so she offered to be here at 5PM. That way I can arrive clean at the hospital. That was sweet.

Oh joy, I open up one of the local versions of an on line news site I go to and find out some guy got murdered like 7 blocks north of my house, on the same street as I live on. This happened Monday apparently and just now the cops are talking about it? I must have walked right past the place on my evening walk this evening and did not even know.

Well, for starters....we got a new addition to the family on Thursday! A 5 year old female Golden Retriever who was a rescue from a puppy mill; never seen or known or had any contact with life or the world outside of a dark, dank barn somewhere out in Amish territory (so, no electricity) for the first 5 years of her life. The only light she saw was the sunlight through the barn, and when it got dark....everything got really dark and she was left alone outside in the barn with who knows what else, if anything at all. EVERYTHING is a new experience for her. So Thursday I ran home from work to see her, and I've spent every moment I could with her over the last 48 hours. She's so sweet! Extremely nervous about everything, but that is to be expected. It will take her a good six to eight months, maybe a whole year to really settle in and get acclimated to the world and everything in it. But we are going to give her a permanent FOREVER and ever and ever, happily ever after home.
As for this afternoon....I just received another sextortion email. I completely ignore them, I know enough not to ever do anything with them (especially payment!) I just use my Bitdefender Total Security add-on to "mark as Spam" and thenI get rid of it. But damn, if it's not annoying AF. They had stopped around November and through Christmas and even into this new year 2024, so I was kinda hoping I was done with them....But now this is the 2nd one in a week that I've received. Frickin' annoying!

Horrible day today; three (3) HUGE, full-blown Meniere's attacks lasting a total from 5:30 am to 2 pm....That's 3 in 8.5 hours....that's an average of 2h 50min per episode.
I felt so horrible, I decided to take tomorrow off. For me, that's a huge step. I never take time off work whether it's legit sick time or 'just a day to myself'. I'm always working, even when I am sick. But today was so bad, I'd decided I didn't have a choice. I didn't want to take the day off...I NEEDED it.

The surgery didn't go as planned. I understand that my condition was not life threatening, so I was on a waiting list for many months. Besides that the surgeon needed a knee surgery, which also required a three month revalidation. So the surgery would take place on the 20th of February. Last week the surgery was delayed for a week. I understand that emergencies take priority. No problem. So the surgery was finally scheduled for the 29th of February. However, the surgeon who planned the whole botox thing and type of mat replace surgery to close my 20 month open wound wasn't present. In my medical records the original surgeon wrote that he wanted to do the surgery himself and I also wanted him to do it. So the surgeon present called the original surgeon, who was in the city and he jumped on his bicycle and performed the surgery himself. He later also apologized to me. That was cool. I had constant difference of opinions about medical issues. Of course they usually know things better than me, but when they don't then they don't just man up. The list is long, but I have enough going through this again. One of the issues is a belt which I need to wear for six weeks around my chest. And that belt hinders my oxygen supply. That may sound obvious to you and me, but not to the medical staff. I asked for the obvious tests: with belt and oxygen mask, no belt and with oxygen mask, with belt and no oxygen mask, no belt and no oxygen mask. Of course I was right. But that meant I was an annoyance and I had to go with belt and no oxygen mask. So when I got home I wasn't even able to walk small distances during doing the laundry. I took the belt off and it went a bit better, but I still felt insecure and didn't want to sleep like that, so I called a doctor to my home and one came with an assistant. He ordered to take the belt off and don't do the laundry. Go to bed. Tomorrow your regular doctor calls you for a solution. (This happened yesterday. I am waiting for the call). Anyway... I got my freedom back: No more nurses at home every other day. Edit 1: I forgot to mention that I have COPD and Asthma, so my oxygen level is already bad. Edit 2: I lost my passport, so I called two departments of the hospital yesterday. They called me back and told told me that they found it.

The last HoI4 game has turned out to seem very interesting. I've never seen that before. I've arrived at Jan 1941 without being involved in any war. And my UK, Churchill and everything, is allied with a Mussolini led fascist Italy and democratic France. We're an European island of peace. And I have a military Attaché in Germany - also democrat - and deliver Lend Lease to them in their war against Soviet. Germany, Poland, Finland, Baltic nations, Sweden, Czechoslovakia and Japan are allied and at war against an aggressive communist pact led by a giant Soviet empire.
I've done tons of mistakes in my own buildup, but I've still probably done better than ever before, though I have a lack of destroyers as usual. It seems like Germany-Poland will be able to win. We'll see. And what happens next?

<sigh> They did it again. Paradox patched HoI4 and made all save games incompatible. I had to restart from 1936, do all the groundwork again. I've only "finished" this game once, uninterrupted by patches. It's my fault I guess, playing so slow.

Paradox patched HoI4 and made all save games incompatible. That's the Paradoxian Hell Loop; one of the reasons I grew tired of their games. Pity, I was a fan for a long time, but now I enjoy more watching and reading how other people play.

Had a great day yesterday.....Last day of work before March Break and last night I got the chance to spend some quality time with my best friend; he is married with 3 kids and has a crazy busy career so we only see each other maybe two or three times a year....But a friendship that has lasted 36 years, it's like no time has passed at all and we can pick up right where we left off but still share in each others ups/downs. It was really good seeing him last night. Quality time well spent with some good laughs along the way.

So, playing HoI4, minding my fleet upgrades, I suddenly decided to look in to my ol' buddy Germany, see if he needs any more lend-lease. And was shocked by a sudden reality-disconnect - or re-connect -, because there he was, the ugly, disgusting face of Adolf Hitler, staring back at me. "- How the H** did he get back into power?!" ...Then the penny dropped, that was last game, the save game I couldn't load because of the patch. This is the new game I started. ...And USA is not my ally. Mussolini is not a peaceful friend. Germany is not democratic. France is not an ally, and is balancing on a communist takeover any minute. Pity, it would have been cool to see where that other game would have gone. Now I'll never know.

Last night at 1AM I woke up with a wet T-shirt. Long story short: One of the weak spots of the old would was stitched, but the skin was too thin there. So it opened. And thus it is leaking like hell. If the bandage is saturated then I need to use towels on top of it. It will heal, because this time there is no net near it, but it will take some time. So, instead of a nurse every other day, I now need a nurse twice day. That's progress. That spot is isolated from the rest of the new wound. And the main wound is huge, but it heals just fine. It is closed. Now if only that tiny isolated spot can do the same...
