In HoI4: Well, well. Civil war in Soviet. Who would have thought that? Tsk, tsk, what bad luck for them. 😏Could it possibly have anything to do with all those crates of rifles, 🤔 I shipped off to those nice Russians a couple of months ago? Nah,.. couldn't be. What did they call themselves? Ant Ista Linists something? Good people I'm sure.

Last night my ISP had a maintenance and in the morning I didn't have internet. I called support, but we couldn't get it to work by using the default factory settings. According to them there was no router connected. So, they will send me a new router tomorrow. But I stubbornly tried it a few times and all of a sudden everything worked again. They will send a new router anyway, because my router was unreliable.

Meanwhile, I've heard from Paradox that they soon intend to do it again: Make HoI4 incompatible with save games. So I'm not investing too much into my current game, though I intend to take the opportunity to experiment a bit.

Note to self: When walking make your feet use the floor. And avoid headsets on said floor. So, I had to buy a new over-ear headset. I opted for a cheap one of about 40 euro. To my surprise it sounded better than I thought. 50mm drivers, which are used in more expensive ones as well, are its secret. It is a bit firm on my head, but so far it is a pleasant experience. And it has a feature that I didn't see before. If I had second headphone then I can daisy chain it for a guest. The cable for that is supplied. It also works fine with a phone and it has a 3.5mm and a 6.3mm connector. It has a mic and a remote. It's a keeper.
I think someone dropped my shower head, because it leaked from the side. So, I ordered a new one. Also cheap. 15 euros. I wasn't able to find out if it would fit, but it turns out that the connection is half an inch for all of them. It fitted perfectly and it works fine. It has 3 different settings. I am very happy with it.

So tomorrow, HoI4 will probably be patched beyond save games again. My current game will be the third game to be interrupted after 1940. That's pretty much when you (or I at least) finish up basic organization and basic upgrades. So I've done that process pretty repeatedly, and am starting to fall into a practice. I set all ship building counters to 1, to gain control of the dock yards after they have finished what they're doing, and queue additional yards to finish everything asap. It usually takes about a year for Britain, and then I have free yards for upgrading ships. That year is spent to research things to have on the upgrades: Sonar, depth charges, aircraft catapult, radar - though radar will not be quite ready... So this time I modified my order of upgrades again, to better fit needs and march of the technology trees. So I started with aircraft carriers. You just slop on another aircraft hangar on them, and upgrade engines of Hermes and Courageous class. Swapping engines on these particular ships is remarkably cheap. Why? Probably an oversight by the developers, since engine upgrades otherwise tend to be almost as expensive as a new ship. I also chose to let the Ark Royal finish building, and not only that but built another three Ark Royal2 class (featuring extra hangar) carriers, since there will be a need for more carriers and will take a good while before you can build anything better (due to Naval treaties). Previously, I have started with submarines, but last game I learned something new: You definitely want submarine engines III and submarine torpedo room III before you do it. This is acquired with Sub 1940, which you push in the development program. Not to build any 1940 type subs, but to stuff all existing subs with maximum torp III and engine III. Double torpedo sets and sub torpedo III will give those old subs tremendous firepower, and the III engines will make them silent and hard to detect. Old order: sub upgrades, destroyer upgrades, light cruiser upgrades, heavy cruiser upgrades, carrier build programs, BB upgrades, various build programs. New order: Carrier upgrades + carrier build program, destroyer upgrades, light cruiser upgrades, submarine upgrades, start of build programs for subs and destroyers, concurrent with heavy cruiser upgrades, BB upgrades...
And it worked pretty good. My submarine squadrons have done a splendid job massacring the Italian, German and Japanese onslaughts. They have really tried hard to get troops onto Britain, Caribbean, Malaya, Africa, Malta,.. to no avail.
When it comes to industry I've followed a repeated sequence of one civil factory, one infrastructure to 100%, and then three shipyards. And I never build anything on less than 100% infrastructure, takes too long time.
Military factories I only gain in the early years through various "National Focus". Consequently there will be a lack of aircraft and armor. There are no solutions, only tradeoffs, as Thomas Sowell would say. Playing Britain, the navy is more important than everything else. There will not be time to replace significant ship losses! Significant losses -> broken navy -> collapse in the naval struggle -> and you're lost. You MUST dominate and stomp! All the time. Political developments are unknown of course, but it's fairly safe to bet that you'll have at least three big navies, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, or USA against you, and maybe four. The navy must be so well equipped and so well trained and so well organized that it can consistently outclass the opposition in every encounter. Achieve that and it seems "easy", fail and it becomes hopeless. It's an all or nothing problem.

Yesterday was painting day, but today I have basically wasted the entire day with alternatingly watching Jimmy Broadbent and Steve Alvarez Brown drive iRacing Sebring 12 hour, and playing HoI4. They have kinda crappy iRacing rating, particularly Steve, so they were misplaced in mediocre slot. Steve qualified the car in 6'th. Jimmy started the race and went quickly up into the lead. When they had lapped the entire field, I quit and played HoI4 for some hours, desperately trying to build enough destroyers, just as usual. We had fish and fries, really nice. Don't know why I've started to like that so much lately. I've always liked fish, but fries... Just checked into the race again to see if they have been crashed out. Nope. They're still in the lead with 1½ hour left, and by almost 4 laps now. Well, we'll see if they last the entire race. P.S. Yup, they won by 4 laps. ...And oh yeah, I watched a couple of movies on TV. Don't usually do that, so more of the day wasted.

I have changed my mind about the headset that I bought earlier. The ear cushions press too firmly against my head. And because I wear glasses it was really uncomfortable. So I have changed it for a Corsair HS65. It is comfortable, is wired, has a mutable mic, volume control and it sounds good. It works for many different platforms. Great for both listening to music and for gaming. From stereo to 7.1 surround. It costs twice as much as the other one, but it is worth it.

Really crazy game in HoI4 this last time. Lots of cross-alliances and back stabbings. Only Portugal stayed out of the fray. They usually do. France and Belgium soon joined Soviet in their global conquest. Good thing, meant I could take more control of Africa. My fleets dominated as never before, proving my new modernization concept. Never had so small losses.
Against Germany, the land warfare and air was a completely different thing though. I threw in a strong army to try to help Netherlands stand against the onslaught. Worked well, sort of, or worked for a while, but my losses were unsustainable, depleting my stocks and manpower. Many thousands of aircraft shot down, many thousands of tanks lost. Units completely depleted of trained men and equipment. My production lines and reinforcements couldn't keep up. Netherland was occupied and Germany's defeat had to wait for a couple of years.
This requires study. I'm only good at handling the fleet.
But that part was glorious this time. 18 Carriers (5 old original + 13 built), 22 Battleships (12 old original + 10 built), 31 Heavy Cruisers, 75 Light Cruisers, 295 Destroyers, 216 Submarines. For once I have "enough" destroyers, a 660 ship navy.
Fleet a bit thin on Carriers and Heavy Cruisers, I would have thought. But this time I never needed any more. Enough destroyers cure many problems.
How? - 133 dockyards!

I have to say that this last HoI4 game has been rather strange. Of course, all HoI4 games tend to be strange, and even with exactly the same initial conditions, very different things may follow. But, anyway:
Italy decided they wanted a rematch after a new government were given all their territory back. Essentially they turned communist, failed to recruit both Communist China and Soviet, but lured poor Bulgaria and Mongolia to join them and then went to war.
Now both Italy and Bulgaria have capitulated again. But Mongolia is far away and has no borders to any enemy nation, and also no coastline. I do not believe any nation in my faction is allowed to send troops through the surrounding lands. I even suspect Mongolia can't either, so now what? Forever "war" without a shot fired?
Meanwhile, I was mistaken in believing I had enough Destroyers. - Of course not! What was I thinking? I started up a couple of production lines again. But, strictly, I don't need more destroyers. Because I think I've sunk all competing navies. I believe the only sizeable fleets navigating the oceans are British. So no, in that regard I don't need more destroyers. But I have my requirements for the task forces compositions. That's why I need a couple more, to fill a few holes.
But this game is probably done, ...unless Russia and China attacks. And USA declared winner (but is an ally so I take it.)

I haven't been able to log in for a couple of days. Amazingly, MS Copilot solved the problem for me. AI ain't completely worthless. It sure know computers and networking at least. One of my settings had changed without me noticing.
Anyway, I've also fixed my problems with PayPal, and thus purchased Baldur's Gate III. Amazing game, though I'm just a couple of hours in.
I suppose the HoI4 game is over. Nothing happens. Forever-war between parties that can't reach each other. Hmm, I wonder if that is something for real diplomacy? 🤔
So do I dare start a game as USA? That's a mountain of work. Maybe I need to learn more about land warfare first. Problem is I don't like playing as Germany or Soviet. Oh well, I suppose there will be a lot of BGIII.
Looking at the number of postings here lately, I could almost believe others have the same problem. But no, the problem was on my side. Or was it?

Had a very long, but still really good day today. Played my first round of golf for the 2024 Season, and only having started swinging a club 2 weeks ago at a Simulator and not doing anything really since last August....Today, I had it in mind- I went onto the course with the mindset "I would be happy with a solid 90 for the first game of the year..." And I actually shot better than even that. I didn't lose a ball until the 15th hole (then put two O.B.), but that was the only error I made all game. I shot an 87, I played the Front 9 in just +4 and got worse on the back 9 because it was really backed up. I waited 20 minutes just to tee-off and then another 15 in the middle of the Fairway for the idiots in front of us to get off the green so I could hit. But after becoming very impatient, instead of hitting a 6-Iron 200 and reaching the green in two, I chose to lay up with an 8-Iron and I just hit a weak 155. Then I chipped on and settled for Par 4. But because of the backlog, I rushed myself to finish that hole. I just wanted to get off and move on to the next one. Yet still, the guys in front were still taking their time. Turned what should have been a 4 hour round into near 6 hours on a course that is only 6500 yards from the back (Blue) Tees.
Still, to have shot an 87 on my first game of the year....I walked away quite happy in spite of a few bad holes. Tons more golf to play!

Watched the Bilstein Bois race for the first time this year. 4 hour Nurburgring Nordschleife. They have got a GT4 this year, BMW M4 GT4. I thought the higher class would be more competitive, but well, they're doing real good. They were mostly in the lead. No 1 in class and pending pit stops even maybe No 1 in GT4. But then, after 3 hours, just as Steve were going to pit and handover the car to Jimmy for the last stint, a front tire exploded in 270 km/h. Scary shit. For some reason, Steve managed to keep the car on track and not crash, though the steering wheel position was weird. He managed to limp into pit, but everything around the wheel was smashed, suspension, steering rod, brakes. The mechanics tried to get the car out again, as finishing the race would give some points. But they never found all the parts needed in the hour that was left, so no go. Pity. Starting the season with a win would have been neat.
Cause for the tire failure was probably sharp wreckage parts left on the track from a number of previous accidents. Lot's of crashes. But it's a multiclass race with more than 100 cars participating so it's pretty hectic.
I've got a bit deeper into BG III. It's a great game and so. Very much like Dragon Age: Origin. But: While the game is graphically modern and much more advanced than DA:O, it plays worse, for the very same reason. It's hard to see the things you need to see, particularly in combat. And the optional "Tactical View" doesn't help at all. This forces you struggle with the camera all the time. Unfortunately, at least I, then often manage to screw up the commands for the party members. I get locked into attack mode when I want to move etc. or the wrong weapon, or wrong character. It's fiddly and annoying to get used to. And I need a manual. The tutorial hints that pop up, usually do so when I'm occupied with something else, like fiddling with the view control, and then quickly manage to fade away never to be seen again, before I have a chance to read them.
So, despite the incredible reviews this game has won, and it deserves them because there haven't been a game like this in decades (or decade), my verdict is that DA:O is better because it plays better. Otherwise, this is very much a wet dream for DA:O fans, a DA:O style game with modern 3D graphics and UI. So, yes, a fantastic turn-based party-RPG game. Absolutely. ...But it plays worse than old DA:O.

Another 4 hour race on Nurburgring Nordschleife today. Bilstein GT4, Jimmy started, just a while ago, from pole of GT4, 25th overall, and is now, after a couple of laps, leading GT4 with 20 sec. and 23rd overall. If the car holds together for all 4 hours, it should be a win today. Because Manny is as fast as Jimmy and Steve is almost as fast, and Mischa can't lose enough time to drop any position. ...But: Long distance racing is about consistency. There has already been accidents and tire problems for others.
P.S. It should be mentioned that Bilstein is using this car for suspension developments. Of course they are. So it's in a GT4 subclass SP8, that allows some non-homologated deviations from the rules. So it's to be assumed that these cars might be faster than the standard, SP10.
P.S. 2 So P1 in class in the end, P4 in GT4, P21 overall. It got more exciting than it needed to be, due to another puncture and two extra pit stops. Steve even had to do some hero driving in the last laps and a heroic overtake on the penultimate lap, in order to get back into P1. All's well that ends well.
P.S. 3 The overall winner passed the leader on the finish line, literally. Some thousands of a margin.

I had a petit mal seizure while driving and nearly crashed. For the uniniated: a petit mal seizure is an absence seizure, where your brain kind of loops for a short period of time, usually just for seconds. I started having them after Covid in 2020, but I don't have a diagnosis or anything, and they don't usually happen when driving. Until now.
So, there was a red light up ahead, I started braking, and then nothing. When I came to, the car in front of me was far too close, and I thought I'd hit it. I'm pretty sure the automatic collision detection engaged the brakes, and I panic braked, and the car stopped just in time.
I consider myself warned.

That must have been scary. Do you really need that car or can you live without it? Take care man. I want to ban you for a long time to come.

That must have been scary. Do you really need that car or can you live without it? Take care man. I want to ban you for a long time to come. I actually avoid driving when I can, because of my eyesight, but this was a special case. We have a nice car, and I enjoy driving, but yeah, imagine if that had happened on a motorway.
Thanks man, I'll try and stick around; there is much banning to do indeed.

I mostly didn't do things I should have done today. I didn't finish though, so I'll continue to not do things I should, tomorrow.

Today two friends came to visit me. One of them brought the board game Catan. To my surprise I won. I like these guys having around. I know them for about 50 years. We lost contact, but these days we see each other at least once a month. Good times.
