I'm so happy it seems like Reyes is picking up a lot of steam. I fell in love with him after our first meeting. That wink sold me. I was worried because he was basically a big nothing in the pre-release marketing and hardly anyone was talking about him. He wasn't even included in that "who will you woo first" poll. Now he's a strong second place to Jaal in the best romance poll and I've seen so much love for him. I really hope it's enough to convince Bioware to expand his presence. We need that Kadara DLC and Reyes in squad!

Regarding that podcast: taking your business elsewhere isn't "biting the hand that feeds you," it's finding a different hand that won't slap you in the face. Bioware failed to live up to their own standards, and it's perfectly fair to criticize them for it. Kinda off topic musing/rambling: I'd love to see another successful space opera RPG with a potentially LGBT protagonist come out in the next few years, both because more variety is good, and because I'd like to see Mass Effect face some competition within its niche. Maybe that'd get them to actually give a damn. I've heard mixed reviews, but I have a friend that really likes Technomancer. It's just based on the one planet, but it's more sci-fi than other stuff that lets you be gay. I've been thinking about picking it up, myself.

There aren't anyone? Let me name it for him, Dragon's Dogma, Dragon Age, Technomancer, Fire Emblem Fates, Fallout 4, Skyrim, Persona 2, Stardew Valley, Langrisser, Saint Row 4, etc. Biting the hands that feed you? lol, sorry, if I don't eat shits. They asked a guy who didn't play any game outside of Bioware apparently. Don't forget the Fable series. While not great, they got it. Also, really? Don't bite the hand that feeds you? When the hand feeds you scraps with a hint of bullshit, i'm gonna bite. Fable was actually my first experience being able to have a gay protagonist! It's always been kind of special to me for that. I was disappointed that Reaver would never love me, but still. lol

Off topic I was just browsing to find my profile picture I made in big form. It has 2.5k views, either that's a lot of peopl on here or it's gotten around. It is my proudest creation mind you This is funny to me, because back in the innocent, speculation days when a couple of us were thinking Gil's "only friend" might be a pet I was thinking Gil seems like a cat person. If only!

Hey guys, looking for community feedback on the situation for review materials. Please keep it constructive however. What'd you think of the situation with the m/m romances, and all the romance options as a whole? I was incredibly disappointed that we didn't get any options in the squad. Add to that, we're the only ones to get only two options, only ones to get just NPC romances, with one not even being on the Tempest, only ones to not get a sex scene, only ones to get only CC face LIs. I love Reyes, but was so disappointed his animations were clunky and unpolished compared to those with Sara, as well as dialogue with Vetra after the romance where she calls you his "queen". It felt like the effort didn't measure up with the male romance for him. The disparity for m/m romances compared to everyone else is the most it's been since ME2, when they shut us out entirely. To take a step back from ME3 was pretty hurtful, I have to be honest about that. That being said, I did love Reyes and hope he gets more content in the future. I'm definitely supporting the push to make him a squadmate going forward. I loved that he was a complex character with a story relevant to the plot. Bioware often makes the m/m options unimportant to the plot and, with gay exclusive characters, heavily focused on their sexuality. Gil is another "gay story", for me. Steve had his dead husband, Dorian had his daddy issues with magic conversion therapy and Gil has his gay parenting story. The bi options at least tend to escape that, and Reyes at least had a part in the story that really interested me. His voice actor also did a great job putting emotion and personality into his lines. The Kadara plot as a whole got me really involved and attached to a positive outcome for Reyes, where as a lot of the choices in game didn't actually feel like they presented any real risk of loss. Introducing Raeka for a few minutes and making me choose between her or nameless Krogan Scouts, or making me choose between the Ancient AI or a random NPC were like this. I couldn't feel very invested in those choices, but I was willing to go to war with Sloane for Reyes, for sure. Basically, I love Reyes and want more, but I'm incredibly disappointed with how obvious it was they'd spent substantially more time polishing his scenes and dialogue for a Reyes/Sara romance in comparison to Reyes/Scott. I was also shocked and disappointed with how little content they made for us, as a whole. I hope we'll get more content for Reyes in the future, but I also hope it measures up to the hetero options, both in terms of how much is there and how it's optimized for us vs the version of Reyes for Sara.

Just because people are happy with Gil does not mean they can't see how BioWare should do better the next time or that they aren't salty in other ways. You can like something in spite of its faults and still want it to be better the next time. That's my personal feeling on say, Dragon Age Inquisitions romance options. The Lesbian/Bi/Gay romances were enjoyable, but parts of how they were implemented was problematic. Being happy but also critical is MUCH better than just being critical though! Like, I'm super happy with my options in DA:I, but after 1000 hours of gameplay, extremely critical of both. But they gave me entertainment and joy for a good amount of time, and I romanced them lots, and even though I ended up being extremely critical of both after banging them numerous times and my canon Inquisitor going solo because my true love is Blackwall, I'm still happy with what I got. And hell, I'm happy being single too, because I had my fun, and I fell in love with the series because of Iron Bull and to a lesser extent Dorian! So MEA kind of hurts, because it didn't give me that experience that DA:I gave me. I try not to bring my salt over here because I don't want Gil fans to hate me more than a couple already seem to, but this specific topic is one I've been thinking about, so I want to comment. lol I think the issue of "getting two well developed options that are fully to your taste" vs "getting characters you love with shorted content" is a bitch of a choice. This is me with Reyes. I love Reyes as a character so much. I would be heavily tempted to romance him instead of Jaal and Liam, if they were options. I would probably keep a game state each with Reyes and whoever the squad was, hoping Reyes got a big role next game to justify him being my canon. Even though I hate that Reyes was off ship and not squad, I love his character and I like the idea of him and Scott as a couple. My casual Scott works so well with Reyes. It makes his story feel complete. DA:I felt really lonely, to me. I didn't have any interest in doing the Iron Bull romance and Dorian just felt so incomplete. The weird thing is that I loved Dorian from the promotional material. I was in his character thread on the BSN from fairly early, cheering for him to be the gay option before we knew. I hate that it felt like he never grew and our relationship never grew. He always felt so distant to me and, eventually literally distant. I just kept wanting Dorian to change and be more emotionally available, more supportive. But no, he just talked about himself some more. Emotionally guilt trip me every time I go through something traumatic. I'm literally about to die and all he's got for me is an, "I knew you'd break my heart, you bastard". It's like, COME ON, man. Make an effort here. Not everything is about you. So, even though DA:I had more content, I enjoyed it less as a narrative than ME:A with Scott and Reyes, because my Inquisitor didn't get that complete feeling in the romance department. But there's also this part of me that feels like.. a traitor to the cause? I should have voted with my wallet. I shouldn't have even bought this game for scraps. I shouldn't praise their work with Reyes when I know it's ultimately less than everyone else got. I'm not happy with what they did and I definitely want them to expand our content. At the same time.. I can't deny Reyes fits my personal taste more than the majority of m/m options in all previous Bioware games, in terms of personality, romance tone and place in the world. If they offer us two characters in the squad next game and write out Reyes, I'll definitely applaud their progress, because it objectively is progress. But I'll definitely be a little disappointed internally, especially if they're not characters that personally appeal to me. I can understand Gil fans feel the same, that they wanted someone with this personality, maybe even somebody that wasn't combative, or with a more domestic plot. Everybody that posts in the dedicated romance thread knows how I feel about the romance by now, I imagine, but I get why others would feel differently. I think we're basically divided between people that want more content for one of the romances given, or people that want someone entirely new and weren't happy because they wanted an alien, or just a different personality type. I don't see many Gil or Reyes fans that are genuinely happy with the amount of content, just some that love those characters enough that Jaal or Liam wouldn't replace them, even with more lines and scenes. And I think for some it may have been different, but they've already gone through hours and hours in game and committed to the idea of Scott with their guy. It's hard to see someone else now for some, I think. So, fixing what we've got feels better than moving on. I get why others feel the other way, too, though. I think outside of "there needs to be more m/m content" there isn't a right or wrong on the specifics, just personal opinion.

I'm with the opinion that explicit sex scenes are not at all needed and actually a huge waste of resources, but I agree it's obviously shitty if they make them for everyone but gay men. It sends the message that they think gay sex is either too gross or too controversial for their game. It sort of legitimizes that sort of thinking. So, by all means, dial it back for everyone, but I do think it should be there for gay men if it's there for everyone else. The alternative is too negative a message.

i have clear preferences myself, but i'd rather see bioware not assign any clear top/bottom roles to anyone. bio games don't need to be that explicit, and i definitely prefer having room for my own imagination regarding sex scenes. Honestly, I'd be totally fine with it if they didn't go so over the top with the sex scenes and stuck to lusty kisses and after-glow scenes. Then people could imagine whatever they want. It seems like they blew out the budget just trying to do a few of these scenes, already.

Fortunately any possibility can be true. And any explicit sex scenes involving m/m characters in the future I would hope have an option to determine the roles to keep the rpgness in tact. This, I really doubt will happen. They'd have to make two whole scenes for every m/m character, probably three dialogue options to imply top/bottom/vers. IMO, it's not worth that kind of resources and I know they're not going to think it is. We're lucky if we get one scene and a decent amount of content. But I still think these highly detailed sex scenes were a dumb idea, to begin with. It doesn't feel like they had the time and resources to work out even the few they did without shorting everything else.

Hawke can joke with Fenris about his (Hawke's) dick being too big after one romance scene... your speculation is well-rooted in the text, caladrius . Someday I have to do a Fenris romance in DA2. He's actually the most attractive Bioware romance, to me. I think he's incredibly cute. I just always do Anders because DA2 is practically a story about Anders, not Hawke. lol

I think on the gay sex top/bottom issue, they should just pick whatever they think Makes Sense (lol, I know, can of worms here) for the character. It's not really reasonable for them to animate multiple scenes and dialog options to pick your own sex adventure. That's a waste of resources, to be perfectly honest. I love the romances as a narrative tool, but wanting them to become a choose your own porn adventure is excessive. Just pick one configuration and go with it. The only problem would be if it was the same every time. Flirts can sometimes imply versatility, too. I'm sure sometimes people will want one character to be another position than they pick, but compromises are necessary. Resources aren't unlimited.
Also, I'm just going to go ahead and make a judgement call on everyone so far. I'm sorry if my stereotyping offends anyone. lol
Kaidan - Vers, but bottom scene. Steve - Vers, also bottom scene, because Shepard was ++ machismo.
Gil - Bottom, he seems submissive, to me. Reyes - Def. vers, I think he's up for anything. He'll flirt with Scott about giving BJs. lol Top scene, though. He was dominate in the cave scene.
Zevran - They actually showed him as vers, top for elves, bottom with everyone else.
Anders - Vers, but I would say bottom scene. Fenris - Bottom, because, idk. Bishi elf.
Iron Bull - Canon top. Dorian - He's basically a canon bottom, imo.
As for the PCs, I read Shepard as really hard to imagine as a bottom, because he's so cheesy machismo. Scott could be anything, but I think of mine as vers in his relationship with Reyes. The DA characters have more range.

I've heard these lines of argument, and I'm not sure I agree. And as for whether Reyes is better for the Angara... This, to, comes down primarily two things: a figure-head Angaara to be his puppet-ruler, and a lack of public extortion for protection money. That's not what I base the assumption on. Keema says she works with Reyes against Sloane because Sloane never listened to her and just used her as a figurehead for the false impression that she cared about Angaran matters. She sees Reyes as a friend and believes he listens to her more than Sloane. You can talk to an Angaran at the collective base that says, after Sloane is dead, she joined the Collective to get rid of Sloane because of the way Sloane treated her people. She says she's happy with the results. Efvra at the resistance is happy with Sloane gone and the mayor of Aya talks about reaching out for renewed relations with Keema. Instead of Outcasts patroling the streets of the port, you see "local Angarans" in large numbers. That alone is pretty high acknowledgement that they have substantially increased presence and power, imo. There weren't even any Angara Outcasts that you can see, which I think is telling in comparison to the fact that a lot of Angara join the Collective. Your standpoint seems to be that every Angaran we talk to is just too stupid to know they don't have it better under Reyes, despite the fact that every one seems to think they do. I think it's simpler, and more respectful, to believe they know what's better for them. Reyes isn't perfect. Kadara is always going to have flaws, especially because the Nexus keeps sending all their criminals there. The evidence does suggest, imo, that Reyes is better for the Angara, however. I'm willing to take that from their own accounts and presence.

I save the scouts because it makes Drack happy and I don't really have a reason to care about Raeka. She existed for like five minutes and getting Hayjer doesn't mess up anything. Drack is like my monster BFF.

I like the trust/approval system, honestly. It feels super weird being able to do literally anything and the characters react to you basically the same. I feel like it's actually more needed for most DA games. The choices were pretty sanitized in ME:A. There weren't really very many morally grey choices. On top of that, though, there weren't really many characters with strong opinions on anything in particular. It wasn't really a game where it seems like you could easily piss off most people. I liked the friendship/rivalry system conceptually in DA2. (although with some characters I had to metagame or use the console to stick to a path) I don't mind having antagonistic relationships if there's a story there. If it's just, "this character doesn't like you; your relationship goes nowhere" nope, don't care for it. Don't like characters written to get on your bad side. I don't have a burning desire for morally "grey" choices, either. I certainly appreciated that Andromeda never gave me the opportunity to commit genocide, (because maybe genocide is good, if you think about it) unlike the OT/Dragon Age. I don't really take actively evil choices (imo, at least), but I like that DA has more choices you really have to think about and weigh the consequences. I found ME:A kind of flat with choices. To me, making choices that are tough with real consequences in the world and with the characters is more enjoyable than being able to just do whatever you feel like and having everybody be fine with it, even if it doesn't make sense for certain characters. The risk/reward makes me more invested in the characters than if they're just automatons that go along with anything the PC does. I like that they'll get pissed at you, or even turn on you, if you go too far out of their comfort zone. It just makes them feel more like real people. And, also, I've never really had any problem managing things with DA, so it doesn't seem that extreme. But people have different levels of "realism" they want in games, or ideas about what that means. I can understand why people wouldn't want to bother balancing what the party wants. It's like, I like the all bi system, but other people argue it's not realistic. For me, having people go along with everything is too unrealistic and it's harder for me to get invested. It's just my opinion, I get why other people just want to do their shit and not answer to the NPCs. lol

On the case of Iron Bull, what we were told on the old BSN was that one dev actually used his own extra time to make Iron Bull ungated. So, the DA team didn't really actively decide to do it, just the one guy was a hero. lol I want to say it was John Epler that did this, but I'm not sure now. While this is true, he still had to have the "go ahead" from higher ups. He could have worked on it on his own time to his heart's content, that doesn't mean it would have been put in the game if Mike Laidlaw (creative director) and Mark Darrah (executive producer) didn't think it should be in there. Those guys are the bosses of Dragon Age. Not David Gaider, not John Epler, not Patrick Weekes. Those two men. And they have higher ups that they answer to as well. If fact, David Gaider even mentioned that this content wouldn't be in their games if they didn't have the support of studio executives and further on at EA. But that is Dragon Age, not Mass Effect. It is different, targeted at different audiences, with team members with different goals. Continued comparisons are not apt. Well, all I'm saying is, in a pinch the DA team as a whole would have still left certain m/m races as the only ones that didn't get two options if one person hadn't fixed it literally as an act of charity. I'm sure if someone had offered to do extra work for free to make Scott's animations with Reyes better, they would have been totally cool with that happening on the ME team. It's not that I think the DA team, or even the ME team, are being specifically malicious. But when resources are down to the wire, it's generally m/m choices that take the hit first, in both cases. To characterize it as the whole DA team making a decision to put aside resources to fix Iron Bull is also just not the case, and kind of belittles the point that this specific animator did a very cool thing for us. It is true that DA has a better track record, though. I doubt they would have pushed both m/m options off on crew/NPCs. I'd definitely be more shocked if DA didn't have at least one m/m option in the squad. Although, I guess I actually didn't predict ME would backslide since ME3, so there's that.

I may be the only one, but the squadmate I'm having the worst time warming up to is Cora. She could tell me "good morning Ryder", and my instinct is to respond "did you mean to say: I was an Asari Commando, good morning Ryder?" I'm very tired of hearing her talk about it "You know, the Asari Commandos have a saying about mornings.." lol It is weird how much she talks about it. Like, we know, stop fangirling, it's embarrassing for both of us at this point. Maybe we should count and see if Cora talks more about Asari Commandos, or Gil talks more about Jill. Just kidding, Cora has more lines about everything than Gil. She doesn't bother me that much, though. Mostly I just think it's weird how shallow her characterization is for being practically the most obviously canon romance as designated by the devs.

I like Liam and Jaal with their bro rivalry, plus the banter between Liam and Ryder on Liam's personal quest was funny. I felt like Liam and casual Ryder were a great fit. Drack and casual Ryder, also. I loved the bar fight so much. But nothing about Vetra got me very attached. I feel like I'm one of the only people that seems to never be very into Turians. lol The one I didn't expect to like that actually grew on me is Peebee. I thought she'd be another Sera (I hated Sera so much), but she was actually pretty chill. I thought I might kill our friendship shooting her ex, but she was cool about that, too. Even though many who romanced Jaal hate PeeBee, I liked her a lot! Her loyalty mission was actually a lot of fun, and I could count on her to have my back. She was also cool about my rejecting sex with her, telling her to leave Jaal alone and saving her ex. She didn't ask me for sex. Other people that locked in Reyes before the zero gravity scene have said she didn't ask them, either. Not sure if other romances lock it out. Seems mixed on that front. It worked out for me, though, because it just avoided awkwardness. But since I won't be romancing either Jaal or Peebee, I guess they might as well get together in my game state and make some very purple babies. Haha.

I dislike Tann because of the way he treats the Krogan, as well as the fact that he wants to screw over the Angara whenever possible to put the Milky Way species on top in Andromeda. He's an asshole, but I have to say, I don't know what the Nexus would look like if Sloane had been the leader from what we've seen. She's not a competent leader. She seems like a good soldier, but not a leader. I imagine she would have been good as chief of security, if things hadn't gone south. Her leadership on Kadara was just awful. It was a really unsustainable situation. They weren't adapting, like you see the Collective trying to. They were making enemies of the Angara. They relied on dwindling supplies pilfered from the Nexus and were constantly banishing people to die in the Badlands. In the end, Sloane needs Ryder to save her, because she makes an incredibly stupid mistake going out to a cave alone to meet some shady merc leader with no reason to expect she won't be ambushed. Sloane is just really, really stupid.
Though, I guess a lot of what Tann did was also stupid. Turning on the Krogan actually made no sense. There wasn't really anything sustainable about his approach, either, without the Pathfinder. It just hadn't gone so immediately south as Sloane on Kadara. But Reyes doesn't like Tann either, it turns out. He seems happy to deal with the Pathfinder and to align with the Initiative, but he says he left the Nexus because he didn't like the way Tann was leading and thought he could do better himself. IMO, it looks like he really can do better than Sloane or Tann. The Collective is well stocked. They're learning to live with the environment on Kadara and they've enlisted the help of the locals. With the exception of Kaetus, the Collective also seems more loyal to Reyes than the Outcasts are to Sloane. I think it's fairly hard to argue that Sloane is a better leader than Reyes, based on the evidence. But I can see why some people think that's not necessarily positive, if they're hoping to just take the port back later, anyway. Personally, I like that the Collective is strong and makes the Angara stronger. I think the Collective and the Angara will be great allies to have in the long term. Sloane strikes me as the "Milky War First" choice, even though she charges the Initiative. Siding with Reyes is ceding power to the Collective and to the Angara a bit for the long term, where as Sloane seems like more just a short term sacrifice of power. Arguing subjective morality aside, I think a lot of the choice is wrapped up just in how you feel about that.

You can woo Reyes up until the rooftop scene (kisses for all!) After that, you have 2 options: 1. Play through the rest of his plotline and break up with him at the cave scene. Shooting not required--you can still side with him and break up. A bullet does put a damper on the relationship a bit more dramatically however (who would've guessed). 2. Lock in the relationship with Jaal or Suvi (after Archon ship quest for Jaal, not sure about Suvi), then go back to finish Kadara--the rest of Reyes' scenes play out as if you never hanky-pankied at all. Don't have to break Reyes' heart but may break your own. I did option 2 only to reload and replay after realizing that Jaal, despite being sweet and plot-essential and sexy calamari, could never fill the empty space in Ryder's, ahem, heart the way that Reyes could. You're a pal! Now to decide which will be most dramatic and torrid... oh vicarious pixel love life. The bullet seems most dramatic but then I end up with Sloane in charge... also having the guy who broke your heart having a major role in the story still seems to have better long term dramatic payoff. Then hopefully he'll turn up in the sequel or the DLC to turn her head again. I do love Reyes but I'll dump him for another lover simply because I'm greedy and want all the romance scenes I can finangle. Reyes survives the encounter no matter what you pick, so he might come back no matter. I don't know if it will effect his willingness to get back with you if you shoot him, though. I'm going to say it's possible it could be a problem. lol The relationship ends automatically with Reyes if you side with Sloane, but you can also immediately break it off with him and reconcile as friends if you don't. I think that would probably be the smoothest way to "keep your options open" if he's important again later, like if he becomes a squad member next game, which a lot of people have been asking for.

Although, what was up with Gil? I thought he was the gay romance option but he ends up being father to Jill's child if he's not romanced? What was that about? They have a platonic relationship. He doesn't have sex with her. She gets banked sperm if you romance Gil (as Scott) and say you don't want a baby. It's a pretty weird, forced plot, imo. The friendship content makes it especially weird, because he never really says he gay and he talks about Jill all the time. To me it would also sound like he was just really weirdly wording he's with Jill now if I didn't have meta knowledge.

What could they even do at this point? Recording additional lines for gay romances is far beyond what a patch can entail Feature Reyes/Gil in DLC a bit. Maybe do a DLC based heavily around Kadara with Reyes as a temp squaddie just for that DLC. Besides that, do better next time. I doubt they'll do anything free for Andromeda's main plot and I doubt they'd do a DLC just for gay stuff. The realistic expectation is just hoping for a moderate amount more content in DLCs and a better distribution in the next game.

On the case of Iron Bull, what we were told on the old BSN was that one dev actually used his own extra time to make Iron Bull ungated. So, the DA team didn't really actively decide to do it, just the one guy was a hero. lol I want to say it was John Epler that did this, but I'm not sure now.
