Ok so say what you want about MEA. But one thing I did like was giving the main characters a first name that other characters used. I feel as long as I get to make choices and roll play the character how I like I don't mind them being named. I feel it is a lot better then your best friend and lover calling you Warden or Inquiisitor.

Yes.
Mainly because I don't see them doing that for all four playable races - meaning that there'd be up to a total of eight names they'd have to pre-record - and I don't want them to limit race selection again.

I feel it is a lot better then your best friend and lover calling you Warden or Inquiisitor. If it is the SAME as ME:A, where I can chose my own name, then it is all the same to me if they voice it for those who stick to the default name. To me choosing character name is essential part of making the game mine and falling in love with my character, and I am not giving it up. I am totally fine with others referring to my char by the nicknames from Bhaalspawn to Pathfinder & I always loved it how LI in Bio games gave the PC the endearment one too, like, say "amatus" and "siha" Aww....
Erm, also what formerfiend said. It better not be a human only game!

You know, despite of deep adoration for Hawke, that's actually my LEAST favorite nickname of all. That olde "e" on the end still maketh me grind my teeth.

If they want to use your last name (as in DA2/DAI) or your first name (as in MEA), I'm fine with either/both as long as I can choose my own first name if I want to. But it is a nice touch. Either way, you're going to be addressed by your title, pet name, etc. 90% of time anyway to keep the VA word count down, unless they go with single race protag again. I don't foresee that happening (I hope not), but you never know...

While I stand by my original point I'm going to add that I'm kind of hoping we don't have an official title in the next one. I don't want to be part of an organization like we were in DAI. If there's one thing I hope they bring back from DA2 it's for our PC and party to just be an unaffiliated group of highly skilled individuals, rather than part of a larger entity.
Would like a little more self motivation than in DA2, though.
Sorry for the tangent, though.

I like my own name. Even giving the warden or inqui (and Hawke) of course last names was a bit too much for me. but Since Hawke is my favorite player character in the DA series, I'm not wholly against it, if it is well done. But I prefer to give my characters my own names. And I too want to keep the different races - something I like to see in the ME universe one day too

I second that yes and that why. I know there are people who find it odd when love interests or companions refer to the player character by their title or surname but I think a fine compromise would be, as it has been before, that the love interest and companions refers to the player character by a nickname or endearment.

A last name I tolerate some what but a first name, I find it annoying. Then it doesn't feel like its my character I'm playing, I'm playing someone else's character.

One more thing: if there is the last name, but you can give the PC a unique first name, please, do not identify the avatar with the Last Name tag. I know the technology is there to put the customizable first name as a tag over his or her head!

Ok so say what you want about MEA. But one thing I did like was giving the main characters a first name that other characters used. I feel as long as I get to make choices and roll play the character how I like I don't mind them being named. I feel it is a lot better then your best friend and lover calling you Warden or Inquiisitor. Eh, Gil still calls Scott "Ryder," even in some romance moments, so it's not universally applied. I wouldn't mind it as long as it's like MEA where I still have the option for my own name. I'm also using the default Scott as I like his appearance. All of this, in combination with the large amount of auto-dialogue, doesn't really give the feeling that Scott is my character. I'm okay with that, since it's ME and I'm not emotionally invested in the franchise. I would NOT be okay with that for Dragon Age, where I want it to be MY character.

I don't mind either way. In a lot of the games I play, the main protagonist already comes with a preassigned name (there is no option to name them). Therefore, for me, naming the main character is not a prerequisite to making the game "mine". It's the actions/decisions and the relationships that I form in game that make the game "mine".
'What's in a name?' as was so famously put.

No. There should be no default name, no default appearance, nothing. That's my opinion.

If they do use a default appearance - which I'd rather they didn't but I'm not entirely against - I want them to make it a malleable appearance. It annoys me that we can't make any small edits to the default appearances of characters like Shepard, Ryder, or Hawke. Maybe I like the basic appearance of those characters but would like to make one or two minor changes - tone down on BroHawke's beard a bit or give LadyHawke longer hair or change their eye colors a bit.

I like to have multiple characters and so definitely want to be able to choose my own names. Also this: Yes. Mainly because I don't see them doing that for all four playable races - meaning that there'd be up to a total of eight names they'd have to pre-record - and I don't want them to limit race selection again. Multiple races/backgrounds requiring different names makes having an optional default name a lot less viable then it was in MEA. And I don't want to get left with only one background/race option.

I wouldn't be against it. I didn't care one way or another and played a custom named character in Andromeda. Once I saw the videos of how often the first name was used, I went with default on the second game and liked it more. I think the way Andromeda gives choices in going by first or last name works perfectly fine.

I thought it worked okay in DAI. There they used you second name when announcing you at official functions, like the ball, and your LI used their own pet name for you, which I thought was better than if they constantly used your first name. I am quite happy for my first name simply to appear in codices or on documents in game, so it is clear that it is my character.
What is my annoying is when they give you a title and people are constantly addressing you as that. I didn't like being constantly called the Warden in DAO, particularly by my LI, I preferred being called Hawke to the Champion in Act 3 of DA2, and would rather not be called Inquisitor on its own or Herald in DAI. The former seems too formal for my liking and the latter totally ignored my insistence that I wasn't the herald.
I'd prefer not to be a named character and I certainly wouldn't want to return to being just a one race named character with only one background.

I think it would hurt the games replay value for me if I was limited to a particular name. Maybe its irrational, but it would make it harder for me to see my characters as different people and take away some of the appeal of playing the game again.

The only thing I want, is that your LI stops using "Sie" in the german dub when talking to you. "Sie" is the formal you, which is used when you talk to someone who you're not on first name basis with (boss, co-worker, stranger, a teacher etc). I hate it when it's used between people who are clearly in a relationship. It feels so impersonal. The personal you would be "Du" which is used between friends and family (and co-workers if you're on first name basis) So far I heard the "Du" being used between: Hawke and family and...that's it... Of course I don't want them to just address you with "Du" from the beginning, but maybe when you reach a specific point in a friendship. Like for example dealing with Dorian's Father, or doing Cassandra's quest about the Seekers. At least your LI should (when you're locked in) call you "Du" in personal conversations. (When I played ME2 I had a conversation with Thane and he said "Du bist mein bester Freund." (You are my best friend) and I was SO happy he addressed my Shepard with Du and not Sie. QwQ It was only one line, but still.) I know, this thread is about first names, but the "Sie" feels more impersonal to me, then getting called by a title.

You have to consider that most conversations, outside of specific romance scenes, are used for both friend/romance and non-friend/non-romance. Having to record the line multiple times takes additional resources. I can only think of one example right now where the PC is addressed with "you," where relationship status changes. After Adamant and The Fade, Dorian asks the Inquisitor, "Are you all right?" Now, you can be friends with Dorian. You can be romance partners with Dorian. You can also be non-friends and have low approval. The line is recorded once and used for all three. While it would be nice for him to say, "Are you all right, amatus?" (along with the informal "you" in German) to a lover, for him to only use the informal "you" to a friend, and for him to use the formal "you" to a non-friend, they're not going to commit that many resources to such variation. However, scenes that are romance specific I definitely agree should have those sorts of things accounted for in different languages.

Yea because i wouldn't be able to name my own character. That's a part of the process of making a character yo, taking away that option would totally limit my creativity.
