I'd skip the water cooling, unless you plan to overclock. I've always used a good fan and never had a problem since I don't overclock.

I set myself a budget of $3500. I'm really, really hoping to come way under budget so I can get a PS4. I'm buying a new monitor, a whole new, liquid-cooled rig (i7, 1080ti video card), 64MB RAM, and the best PSU to accommodate all of that. With prices expected to tumble, I may be hitting the market just at the right time to save some serious money. This rig is going to last me about three years at Ultra settings, 60fps or better on Frostbite. Maybe, three years down the road, I'll need to upgrade the video card, but it all depends on how low I have to go on the settings. I cannot wait. The end of June won't come fast enough. You can skip the water cooling in my humble opinion. All of my pc's have been air-cooled. I can run Andromeda at 1440p Ultra and keep the card at 53 with just the fans. I also keep my rigs well into obsolescence and none of them have over-heated. Usually the only hardware that breaks is the hard drive. Everything else lasts forever. Normally, that would be great, but I'm sticking inside an antique desk with (a newly carved hole on the fan side) and removed the backing of the desk that covers where the tower will fit. It got warm fast using the old rig (hence the holes) and I finally removed it from there. However, I think I can make it all work by liquid-cooling and fans using the new ports I carved into the desk.

If you have a problem with air flow you may still run into a problem with liquid cooling, since it depends on air cooling of the radiators.

I'll give it incremental tests (30 mins, 1 hour, etc.) If it ever gets too warm, I'll place it outside of the desk on a pedestal, out of sight.

I notice the prices of the individual components you list add up to $750-1000, but the total quoted is $500-700. Also, it doesn't include a cpu cooler, power supply, ram, or any disk storage. I recently built a new rig, so all of that is pretty fresh in my memory. I used fairly high-end components, and the total cost was quite a bit more than what you've stated here. I do sometimes wonder if it's possible to build a capable gaming rig in that $500-700 range. I suppose it depends on what kinds of games you expect to play, eh? I set myself a budget of $3500. I'm really, really hoping to come way under budget so I can get a PS4. I'm buying a new monitor, a whole new, liquid-cooled rig (i7, 1080ti video card), 64MB RAM, and the best PSU to accommodate all of that. Maybe, three years down the road, I'll need to upgrade the video card, but it all depends on how low I have to go on the settings. I cannot wait. The end of June won't come fast enough. You can build a great rig for about half that - though it depends on whether you intend to include a high-end monitor. You can skip the water cooling in my humble opinion. All of my pc's have been air-cooled. I can run Andromeda at 1440p Ultra and keep the card at 53 with just the fans. This. I would not consider water cooling unless I was trying to build in a small case that would be confined in some shelf or something, and thus have it's ventilation / airflow restricted. I shudder to think what could happen to all of those expensive components if you happen to get a faulty water cooling system that springs a leak... IME, it's usually either the HDD or power supply that fails. I expect we'll be seeing fewer disk failures with SSD.

I'm actually curious about how reliable my SSD's will be, I bought them with a 3 year warranty. I've heard that power supplies are prone to failure and I have no reason to doubt it, but it hasn't been a problem in my case. An Uninterruptible Power Supply would probably also help with the wear on a PC's power supply.

That looks viable - though you'd have only 128G of disk storage, and no optical drive. Also, you'll need an OS (unless you have an old license you can re-use).

I could've told projectpatdc this is a PC community before polling. It always has been. Without the poll, though, we'd have missed some good comments. The above is a good point. I've always been a console gamer, since that's what I had access to growing up. That said, any benefits are dwindling quickly. This community makes me consider PC gaming more seriously all the time. Yeah I was thinking it was generally pc players so I got curious and made a poll. I find PC gamers, no offense, usually hold higher standards and typically enjoy niche gaming. I don't run into too many people that would rather have completely linear games except my few friends who play on pc. They want everything to quick, efficient, and easily accessible, and they usually don't like anything in a game that "pads" the experience. It's nice seeing a different view/preference from so many people. I am curious how many of these die hard Mass Effect PC gamers will try out Destiny 2. If the story is good like they are proposing, I can see it many of the ME fans gravitate towards that game because of the story, lore, and linear level design. Although I think we are getting larger overworlds this time. On the Scorpio, I think Xbox is a little out of touch but i like that they are trying something new. Some will gravitate to it for the specs, but I feel like its the library of games and the community that ultimately sells consoles. Xbox's library of exclusives has been lackluster, and Playstation's community has grown tremendously do to more community based games/online play. I won't leave Playstation solely because of the people I play with. The games are a bonus at this point. Xbox lovers will stay for their community, but its never a good thing when there isn't growth. Xbox needs that growth in sales and consumer base. I don't see it happening. I would rather get build a PC myself in addition to my playstation. Mods intrigue me, and I want to learn how to do them to enhance games. I will try anything that satisfies the following non negotiable conditions:
-has a setting I like (it has to be something other than elves and dwarves with bows and swords in Definitely Not Another Ye Olde England); - where I chose my own dialogue responses at least out of two, at least on the MAJOR quests; - that has a protagonist I can create with CC; - looks good; - does not have oppressive feel; - does not have free-for-all PvP; - provides all the gear you need for SP in SP; - has a straightforward gameplay and character build (all keybinds fit on the 12 button gaming mouse); - has interesting dialogues; -and does not take itself too seriously.
The above list is the MUST, and huge bonus points for good-looking male characters, cool outfits (with pants NOT stockings/heels) for females; companions and romances.
Erm... I must have just confirmed you opinion that PC players are niche But for me, anything else is just not a video-game. It's a TV show where I shoot things. And I don't like watching TV. I've tried a couple of MMOs that broke my rules, and... thanks, but no thanks.

I first started with an Atari then Nes, Genesis then my first Power Mac🤢. I loved waiting for the map in Doom to load or how long it took just to find a server for MP. Remember this folks?
It never was that simple for me. Lol. I have a console too but much prefer pc.

I know it's off topic, but have you tried Fallout 4? It fits all your criteria. And an MMO you might like would be Star Wars: The Old Republic. It's BioWare, and you can play it as a single player game. And no PvP, unless you want to. I started SWTOR after the Mass Effect trilogy, and if you play a female Republic Trooper, it's almost as if Shepard had been transplanted into the Star Wars Universe, because she is voiced by Jennifer Hale.

I've played SWTOR for three years before playing ME Trilogy and DA series. 30 characters on two servers, every class story at least twice, all raids, and tons of non-rated pvp. I dunno about FO4. I've tried another mom after, and decided to go back to SP. grind is too much for me. I was thinking of trying New Vegas, but I think it was first person view that put me off. I am waiting for Tyrany to come on sale.

In Bethesda games you can always switch between first and third person. New Vegas is pretty good as well, but way more buggy. I'd recommend FO4, it's the most "BioWare" game Bethesda has done so far. And the first with a voiced protagonist.

I like all sorts of games, really. I've played most Bioware games, the Civ games, a couple Age of Empires and Age of Mythology (one of my favs still). All the GalCivs, and Civ 5 and 6. And some random funny games like Overlord I and II (those are hilarious). Hidden object games, a couple of Dash type games. Candy Crush, Bejeweled. Skyrim and Oblivion, Warcraft 3, Guild Wars I and II. Diablo series.
My opinion of whether a game is good or not depends on what I expect out of it and how smoothly the game runs/plays. How intuitive it is, and so forth.
So I don't know if I really qualify as a niche gamer lol.
For the pricing out of a rig, sorry, I tend to assume that you already have a PC (if not necessarily a gaming one), and can transfer the hdd and OS.

Consoles are just less of a headache now. Thanks. I don't see any real usability difference between W10 and, say, XP, myself. (Never bothered to upgrade to 7 or 8.) Can consoles actually be maintained? My impression was that they work until they fail for good.

Consoles, because I'm house poor. I like consoles myself. I can see modding becoming the next microtransactions thing on consoles. Steam tried it once and they're not done with the idea. Neither is Bethesda. I think there is going to be modders who are going to benefit greatly from this and make some real money doing it. It's just that I have no faith in Gabe Newell, Todd Howard or any AAA publisher. It's going to be fouled up and corrupt as you can imagine without it being illegal.

PCs got worse in that operating systems have become awful and maintaining a PC is always more of a hassle than consoles. Consoles are just less of a headache now. Thanks. I don't see any real usability difference between W10 and, say, XP, myself. (Never bothered to upgrade to 7 or 8.) Can consoles actually be maintained? My impression was that they work until they fail for good. There are console repair shops all over San Antonio. You can go into any one of them and get your console repaired or sell it to them for parts. I remember for a while that one shop advertised that they were no longer take XBox 360 for parts. The repairs usually run from like $10 to $150.

Well consoles are simpler, so they would require less maintenance and concern than PCs. But PCs are so much more versatile, so they would be more difficult to maintain. But a handful of simple concepts and you don't really have anything to worry about on a PC. I've never had a virus or malware infection, for example.

Playing on Amiga 500. Damn those loading times... Oh.... Those memories of my first Amstrad. Never owned a console. Yeah had an Amstrad myself 10 minute loading times tape deck the works good times. Not as much fun as todays games though. As for the OP's question PC is my weapon of choice as I find it easier with my disability to use keyboard and mouse. The abilty to use mods is kind of cool as well although this is just really a bonus.

I play on PC only, originally because the games i enjoy most were PC exclusive (RTS and few old RPGs), so my old PS2 was eventually done for.
Anothe reason is because i do work on a desktop PC, so it's a simple thing to upgrade it a bit and play games on it too. Eventually i've grown to love PC gaming (mods, ini tweaks, online features, etc.) and don't miss at all the consoles.
