"I was hoping for more Yarr! Pirates and less, shooty pirates."
Is this evidence of a broken translator throwing up random sentences it found on the extranet?
Is this evidence of Asari Pirates out on the high seas? Or did Asari space pirates once seek to imitate their primitive water bound bretheren?
Perhaps the Krakken myth is a metaphor for an Asari's head tentacles.
Sirens anyone?
I believe this is enough for us to finally call bullshit on the translator in Mass Effect.
There is no way to explain what she's saying. Unless she spent her teenage years researching the golden age of piracy on earth.
Which would be so obscure a topic that not even PeeBees near magic randomness accounts for it.
Unless of course Bluebeard was a peglegged Asari pirate with a hook for a hand and a fetish for Spanish gold.
The translator breaks my immersion...

Since ME2 aliens seem to know a lot about human culture, despite we being the newest arrival being only part of galactic society for a few decades, while humans struggle to even pronounce alien names. Humanity is special.

Every time I talked with her, it seemed like there was one of these immersion-breakers every other sentence. They could've easily lampshaded it too, by having Kalinda be a human, then it suddenly makes sense that a name comprised of the English letters "PB" is a pet name from her human ex, and how she's so knowledgeable about human culture and idioms.

Kind of goes along with Samara knowing about Knights and Samurai, funny enough.

This is an excellent idea, and one I wish they'd had. Kind of goes along with Samara knowing about Knights and Samurai, funny enough. The two situations are nothing alike. Samara explicitly describes how she familiarized herself with human history, in order to more capably understand and interact with them. PeeBee, although I like her, does make me cringe, at times. The pirate thing is the worst case. She simply acts like a young human woman. I realize that "rebellious maiden un-asari" is her shtick, but they overdid it, at times.

Both Samara and Peebee are interested in cultures outside of their own, and take an interest in some human history. The context is much different, but the similarity is still there.

She has no interest in what the Matriarchs have to say, devotes all her time into the Remnant, looks into Angara/Remnant artifacts, understands Vetra's latin phrase, and spends off hours in the Hyperion. It would be more accurate for me to say she's into anything non-Asari than specifically human history.

While I agree her statement seems somewhat odd without context, I have a slightly different opinion based on Asari's age in general.
When you're 100 and something, you have plenty of time to talk to people, accumulate knowledge about other cultures and find out the peculiar things about them - like (maybe) in Peebee's case, human pirating during the Golden Age. I think it's not utterly absurd that she might have picked up something in that respect and done some digging in the archives.
But in general I agree, the aliens oftentimes seem way too experienced with human culture. Still, I find this way more frustrating with the Angara, who - in contrast to the Asari - are way too human-like in my opinion, and also seem oblivious to the fact that there are also other species around.

Hey, at least the angara don't use the latin alphabet nor do they signal their streets in English.

It's like Jaal stating that angara are very emotional, meaning he's using humanity as a baseline in his comparison and not his own people, in which case he would have said that humans seem to be a bit lacking in the emotional department.
That kind of inexpert writing is all over the ME franchise. Aliens talk from a human perspective and not their own. Would asari claim that they are a long lived race instead of thinking of their lifespan as normal and humans being short lived? If humanity met a race of aliens with an average live span of a dozen years we suddenly wouldn't think of ourselves as long lived either, right?
Rookie mistake.

Garrus had a couple of lines where the 'mistranslation' had been addressed. I can't point the exact moment or dialogue, but he did not know what 'chicken' was (while having heard that many things 'taste like it'), there was something about 'duck'\'ducking' (again, him not knowing what's that\how to do it). Both examples belong to ME3, I think.
Andromeda has some 'lost in translation' moments too, but I don't think those were executed too well (and they should've written much more of that).
Worst 'crime' I can think of is the Angaran sense of humour. I mean, really? We've been living on the same planet for centuries, we belong to the same Human race, and jokes/humour are still the hardest part to translate! 'English humour' would be a great example. I believe that no less than 60% of our planet won't EVER understand what's that so funny about Monthy Python, even when provided with the proper translation. And then, of a sudden, we have Jaal sharing jokes with Liam (and playing jokes on him too - like teaching him a marriage ritual song telling him it's a popular kid's rhyme).

I swear by Shrubbery and a Herring, that no hating was implied! Ni! It's just an example of an 'absurd' humour, which many people can't\don't understand. And we are the humans.

I think this is all a bunch of nitpicking that disregards the fact that no mass effect alien species is really anything more than humans that look different. They're all familiar with humans, use their phrases frequently, act like them emotionally... etc. Mass Effect is pretty much space fluff. The only game that made any real attempt at something interestingly alien was ME1 with the Rachni. So nothing PB says makes me cringe, it's just par for the course. Same with the Angaran. To expect more was not very realistic. The time to walk back things would have been some kind of customer revolt at ME2, which went for rool of cool for whatever reason (I'm sure SuperMac had a hand in it, but I don't think he takes sole blame). Mass Effect Retrospective 1: The Ages of BioWare www.shamusyoung.com/twentysidedtale/?p=27792All that said, I'm not a Bioware basher. Their games are fun and put a lot of what I want into their games.

You've got a point there, if humans can't even agree on what's funny what are the chances an angara is suddenly gonna agree? I now of course feel the need to point out that your mother was a hamster.

Totally agree, this is the real world and sometimes I feel like people have ridiculously high expectations for every single aspect of the game. If all of these things were actually addressed in game the writing could end up being lines and lines of explanations and context and it'd just be shit.

Why is it unrealistic to assume Peebee has spent a considerable amount of time invested in human culture and understanding? She even describes herself as having a very short attention span and always wanting to search out something new or understand something no one else does - hence her diving head long into the Remnant in Andromeda despite all the problems the Initiative was suffering from and then her subsequent disappointment that the Angara had been researching Remnant as well. With that in mind, it's actually unreasonable to assume that she DIDN'T jump full board into human understanding, research and culture when they showed up on the galactic stage. No one else in council space would have done it before after the First Contact War and it would be an interesting challenge for her as well. That would explain her detailed understanding of human culture, idioms, and yes even her humanized nickname.

Let's see. An Asari interested in other cultures and history, citing things from other cultures' history....
What madness is this?! It's totally inconceivable that a reckless free-spirit like PeeBee would be drawn to those same kind of people in Earth's history! How dare she!
Seriously, people? Digging real deep to find stuff to complain about after patch 1.07.

I think a good addition to Bioware games would be the ability to straight up kill companions if you decide - Garrus style. I would shoot Peebee right in her fat ugly face and made a sarcastic comment about it. When did Garrus kill one of the companions? Must have missed that little gem in all my playthroughs. Unless of course you are referencing that 'comic' written by a 10 year-old edgelord, which has nothing to do with ME.
