If you want to do it anyway, just do it, I'm not stopping you. But you're asking for opinion and I don't mince words, if you plan on cheating on him, just leave him be. Toying with him add nothing except colouring your perception on him. I'm not even joking how toxic it gets to be a FemShep/Kaidanmancer when the hate train happens especially over something that was optional and a player's choice to begin with. No need to get worked up like this. The user just asked if a certain setup is possible, not an opinion on the morals of cheating. Let them play their game how they want.

True. When I write up my playthroughs (I'm currently in ME2), I've mentioned things like how, despite being angry over what happened on Horizon, I'm still glad Kaidan isn't with me. In the end, TIM would try to further use Kaidan against Shepard so it's best they're parted. How I see things when writing from Shepard's perspective versus from my own is different. So, in ME2, I understand where Kaidan is coming from. In ME3, where Shepard has been interrogated by the Alliance - and almost certainly given a very thorough physical - it's not reasonable to assume Shepard is with Cerberus. The real problem is that Hackett and Anderson - who both knew more about Shepard's activities, including those done on behalf of the Alliance or just themselves - never bothered to clue Kaidan in that Shepard wasn't a traitor. They could have done that and still said the details were classified. And Kaidan doesn't even really ask questions until Mars. It is a pretty big coincidence that Cerberus attacked the very first place Shepard went to after being released from house arrest. Trying to find out what's going on there seems to me like the responsible thing to do considering no one else was willing to fill Kaidan in. The questions with that huskified soldier don't strike me as unreasonable either considering Liara wasted two time skips that she could have used to tell him about the Lazarus Project. And of course, wanting to know why someone is pointing a gun at a councilor strikes me as extremely prudent even without the baggage. The really sad thing is, that the original script called for a much more extensive subplot about the Illusive Man turning Shepard and Kaidan against each other. If people think Kai Leng makes the squad look bad now, they should see how utterly idiotic he would have made the whole crew look originally. That's one of the things I'm glad they cut out, even if it meant Kaidan getting less content. I've seen a similar thing to the reaction on Reyes, Solas, Koth and Senya. But I think its rooted with the player's perception of how a supporting NPC shouldn't antagonize the Player's motive or decisions and its simply unpleasant and infuriating to be denied. I've had Horizon is described to me by the worst betrayal from a squadmate who should have your ultimate trust because everyone else in the game does. No matter how progression and development of that character or the narrative that will lead, it doesn't change the fact that irrational ugly feeling of being snubbed, the hurtful actions of a disloyalty that deserve to be punished rather than understanding. It doesn't matter whether there's a logical reason behind it, its just is.. the character is antagonizing you and undermining your authority, naturally they deserve a bullet in the head. It doesn't matter if you play a stoic character whose responses are constant, player's feelings still took precedent. The Illusive Man did try to turn Shepard and Kaidan against each other repetitively in ME2 and ME3. The rift is intentional, however in Mass Effect series, the story aren't being told through another perspective which severely limited the information you're getting. It would be nice to get a lot more cutscenes of other characters which happen outside of player's first person limited POV. Say after your talk with Anderson and the Council in ME2, when you walk out of Anderson's office, Kaidan suddenly emerged from the shadows just moments before the door was closed. === As for the other topic, I've already put out the exact dialogues lines of whatever the OP wanted to see with the 'desired' outcome. I am blunt about it because I won't sugarcoat it, Kaidan's reaction is one of contempt and for many that stays forever. But whatever comes out of it, that's their call.

The Mass Effect fandom has the worst case of Fourth Wall Myopia I've ever witnessed. It just amazes me how many players can't wrap their heads around the fact that Kaidan, and Ashley for that matter, thought Shepard's death was faked and no one gave them any reason to think it was actually history's first prove resurrection. Not to mention the fact that the Illusive Man was intentionally feeding Kaidan biased, if not outright false, information to encourage thinking that Shepard was a traitor. Thank you for linking the trope. Now I have a name for how entitled certain Mass Effect players behave. "How dare you question Shepard!? You are whiny/stupid/disloyal!!! Out the airlock with you!" They never try and see things from another character's perspective. They just expect everyone to kiss Shepard's ass regardless of the circumstances.

And yes my question was purely technical ("what happens technically in the game if...")
I already played the 3 games and if it can help you feel better aiobhealfae, I didn't romance anyone in ME1, so, no drama afterwards.
I just wondered what happened "if"... that's all. It was not a question about morality or who is wrong or right.

I think now that I have a perfect male run of ME1 and 2...I'll just stick to 3 since there's no gay in the previous 2 games. Kaidan is best in 3 on top of that. So it all works great for me just skipping to 3.

So it all works great for me just skipping to 3. I actually happen to love ME1 quite a bit so I can't imagine skipping it. Plus, I love flirting with Kaidan in ME1. And while I'm denied romance in ME2, I've actually come to enjoy the game quite a bit. Having a fun time playing it right now. The way I RP is just lots of fun. I write it down in the "What did you do today in Mass Effect?" thread. My posts are quite lengthy. I'm playing a full Paragon (with very few Renegade choices) but I love delving into things like wondering if TIM is partially indoctrinated since, while he is ultimately helping me, he also keeps throwing me into traps without letting me know what's going on (Horizon, Collector ship). And I discuss my feelings about the situation with Kaidan on Horizon to indicate that a) I'm glad he's not present to be further manipulated by TIM and I don't want to risk him on a suicide mission, even if I'll do it myself. It's like keeping hope alive that I'll survive so that maybe I can be with him again. Plus, every time I go to feed my fish and play with my space hamster, his picture on my desk activates. I'd rather have the full experience, the love, the loss, and the reigniting of the romance, then just play the parts that are convenient to me. The one and only glitch still present is the email Kaidan sends that refers to me as a woman. I'd love if someone would make a tiny mod to fix it. I mean, just this year a same sex mod was created for ME1 so it's not implausible that someone might get on this as well. Meanwhile, I've installed Backoff for ME3. I hear that it will extend the same sex romances to give more content. Not entirely sure how it works but looking forward to it.

PS3 doesn't have even an option to modify the save to give you the glitchy m/m experience in Mass Effect 1, so there is no flirting in that game for me. So it's just Shep and his hand till 3. I actually like the story in 1 okay, but the combat and the repetitive side quests are horrible. Mass Effect 2 is fun enough, but again no romance and I've played through it a million times.

Understood, but my experience in ME1 is NOT glitchy. There's an actual same sex mod that was created in February. It unlocks all the dialogue. My male Shepard is never referred to as "ma'am" or "princess". During the sex scene, it's male Shepard and Kaidan. Honestly, I kind of think it's worth playing on PC just to get this experience.

I play on PC as well, but I started ME1 way before this upgraded mod. The use of female pronouns and the femshep model in the cutscene were total dealbreakers for me so I played without any mods. At first I resented having to play through two games without any romance, but the payoff in ME3 went above and beyond my expectations to the point where I think the slow burning friends-to-lovers romance arc is the best way to play. I'm happy the new mod exists for those who can't wait to get with Kaidan (and who could blame them?), but I think it's too late for me. I'm already set in my ways.

^--- ok that was supposed to be quoting you saying that you'd installed Backoff but weren't entirely sure what it would change. Dunno why the forum ate that quote. It looked fine in the preview!
Just FYI, Backoff doesn't support modded-in M/M romances, and giftfish is pretty adamant about it being incompatible with the same-sex mod. Judging by what's come up on the mod's Nexus thread, it looks like Kadian doesn't acknowledge the past relationship during their dinner date; I've no idea if that's the only bug that would be introduced by a modded import, or if there would be more.
As far as what the mod does do for MShep/Kaidanmancers, from poking around under the hood I've seen that it extends some of the early game flirt options to MShep (Which were, I guess, FShep only in the base game? I don't have any experience with the M/M romances), and restores some content - mostly unused lines.

blauwvissa: Oh, I see. With Backoff installed, I loaded up save from right after landing on Mars. Went through it and got to the scene where the huskified Cerberus soldier was found by Kaidan. They have their talk. Kaidan asks of the person he loved is still in there somewhere. I guess this means that Backoff is inconsistent with how it handles imported m/m romances.

dmc1001: Seems to be the case, though if it's only that one conversation... browsing the files and it looks like a change to one of the conditionals could potentially fix that. Oh, and there's a reference to the ME1 romance in the pre-Cerberus base conversation, isn't there? That's another place where the convo would probably go wrong. (I was unhappy with some of the changes that BackOff makes to the FShep/Kaidan romance and have fixed them. Now I fear I'm developing a taste for it.)

Oh, and there's a reference to the ME1 romance in the pre-Cerberus base conversation, isn't there? That's another place where the convo would probably go wrong. (I was unhappy with some of the changes that BackOff makes to the FShep/Kaidan romance and have fixed them. Now I fear I'm developing a taste for it.) It's funny because I use Gibbed and make sure the appropriate boxes are checked. I guess I'd need a full PT of ME3 to find out for sure. If it does cause those kinds of problems I'll probably have to figure out how to remove it before I import my current Shepard who's in ME2. I feel like that will be a lot of work because a great many files were overwritten...hmm, or maybe not. They might all be in a mod folder and so easily removable. I'll look into it when I get closer to the end of ME2.

I feel like this may have been posted before, but I'm okay with it.

If you're not put off by tinkering, I'm cautiously optimistic that removing the reference to Shep's sex in conditional 4309 in ConditionalsDLC_CON_BACKOFF.cnd would solve the problem. It's the only time I see a specific reference to Shep being male or female, and as long as the romance flags from the previous game are set, everything else should run as expected - you should get both the early flirts and the recognition of a previous relationship in the cafe scene.
It's such an easy fix that I'm suspicious of it. One of those "what am I missing?" moments.
The fact that they have lines like "..the person I followed to hell and back, the person that I loved.." makes me think the writers were being deliberately accomodating of modded romances.

I'm not afraid to tinker. However, I confess to not knowing how to alter that file. It's easy to use a coalesced editor or something like Gibbed, but I don't really know how to alter something like a *.cnd file.

Ughhhh, I wrote up an explanation of conditionals editing, only to realize that I had missed the BLINDINGLY OBVIOUS flaw: there aren't m_Shep audio recordings of the lines "Us" and "I can't bury what I feel for you, etc." that would need to be present for that conversation to work.
So, so much for that approach, unfortunately. I knew it was too easy!

Modding MET sounds complicated. It's probably for the best I'm on console. Though I do wish I could get the happy ending mod a lot! Oh well, maybe someday I'll have a decent pc.
