I had planned to make this long post as my first entry in to this amazing topic. But I have decided to keep it somewhat short as it seems I am a bit late to the party. I fell in love with Kaidan after watching a video of the romance as male Shep, saw an almost 3 hour version with female Shep, and I knew I was head over heels. Funny thing is I have never touched a Mass Effect game, but with the new remaster coming soon it's the perfect opportunity to try it. And what better way than to experience the romance in upscaled graphics. I can only imagine what Kaidan's improved character model will look like.

I fell in love with Kaidan after watching a video of the romance as male Shep, saw an almost 3 hour version with female Shep, and I knew I was head over heels. Funny thing is I have never touched a Mass Effect game, but with the new remaster coming soon (even close to my birthday) it's the perfect opportunity to try it. And what better way than to experience the romance in upscaled graphics. I can only imagine what Kaidan's improved character model will look like. First off, welcome to the forum
Secondly...I had the same reaction as you did upon meeting Kaidan, I came into the Mass Effect franchise by means of the second game (recommended to me by a friend, I in turn recommended him Dragon Age). Jacob became my first Mass Effect 'lover', then I found out about the first game and played that, mostly to get a better sense of the story.
Granted at the time I'd played Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic a few years prior, and his VA also voiced Carth Onasi, so went into the first game expecting a bit of a rehash of that character. Boy was I surprised, I loved Kaidan...nay I love Kaidan. I've been through some...bad times, and at the time had frequent nightmares, even about Mass Effect (husks in particular) but for some odd reason Kaidan was always there to safe me or help me wake up by telling me...it'd be alright.
So yeah, out of all Bioware romances Kaidan was, and still is...one of the few romance options I've never swapped out for another.
To cut this short, I too look forward to seeing Kaidan in all of his 4k glory and fall in love with him all over again

Just as we talk about what Kaidan would look like upscaled to 4K and Bioware releases a trailer...
Waited for Kaidan to show up, and he does appear, for about 1 second, what I did get to see looked good though, then again it was the ME3 model so no surprise there. Was hoping to see if the same model is used for ME1, we do get to see an upscaled Ashley from ME1.

Kinda sad that I missed out on so many good discussions because I was late to the Kaidan Alenko fandom. I came here to this positive environment because I could find nothing but hatred for the guy, and I did not understand why. All the same topics have been brought up here at some point, and it was the exact same things I could find no matter where I looked. On youtube or forums I could find nothing but the exact same words brought up over and over again, he is boring, whiny, and distrustful. I have seen the romance and non-romance conversations on youtube over and over, and I do not understand where they are pulling out these arguments from. He has the most interesting background, killing a Senior Turrian Commander with (flawed) L2 implants at the age of 17, losing the girl he loved, and almost single-handedly closing down an entire company in the process. He is a powerful Biotic using old hardware, suffers from Migraines, but does not let it interfere with his performance. This he brings up once in a conversation but just as quickly brushes it off, saying it’s nothing more than a headache, and not the debilitating condition that it is. He has his life together and he does not need Shepard to make a name for himself or push himself to get ahead in life like other characters i can mention *cough* Garrus *cough*. The whole Horizon debacle I understand can rub people the wrong way, but people are looking at the whole thing with a mindset that all people can use to look at a conversation after the fact and know exactly what to say to get the best outcome, it even has a word, it’s called hindsight. I have had arguments/fights with my boyfriend, and in the heat of the moment have had no idea what to say and even say the wrong things. I think it’s rare for anyone to know exactly what to say or do when you are angry, only to figure it out hours later when it’s all cooled down. Many arguments always started with, Shepard should have said this or Shepard should have done that, and they are correct, but Shepard cannot see the future, and in hindsight, we can all be clever about a conversation and roll our eyes at the outcome. As for the voice actor and Carth Onasi, I have read all about that too, many people hating on Kaidan because he also voiced Carth, or to project that character on to Kaidan is just petty in my opinion. Carth may be whining (not a word I like to use) but if they actually played the game and listened to his story they would understand why. His wife literally died in his arms and he lost his son because a man he respected betrayed him. If you are not allowed to be distrustful or complain a bit about it, what kind of soulless individuals are these people? If someone I loved died in my arms I would be sad/angry about it too. I love Gabriel Sbarge's voice acting, it’s very unique. To have the ability to make a raspy voice sound so natural. One youtube comment I found said the voice was monotone, I was seriously considering telling that person to look up the word in a dictionary. I hear inflections, emotions and at one point he even does voice acting, within voice acting, with the line “I was at the helm of the dreadnought that killed your father”.

Oh trust me, you won't believe how many times I (and probably other Kaidan fans as well) heard/read the phrase 'Kaidan is so boring, you should romance Garrus (or whoever) at least he's loyal to Shepard'. Plus, I only ever view Garrus as my Shepard's brother...or at least a brother figure, never as a possible lover.
I admire Kaidan immensely, he's loyal to a fault but knows where to put his priorities. I love the teasing line Shepard can say to him during ME3's prologue
Shepard: you were always stubborn Kaidan: *laughs* me? the ways he says it seems to say 'we both know you're just as stubborn' my heart almost literally broke during the end of that mission when Kaidan nearly dies because of that f-king droid
during the Citadel dlc he has a line where he says 'I can reave know' which according to the lore is quite a hard move to master for any biotic that's not asari the reason why he isn't as powerful...is because he tends to hold back, a fear of hurting those around him due to what happened on Jump Zero. During ME3 he lets go of that finding out just how powerful he really is. Plus there's the whole 'trained an entire biotic platoon' meaning he's also a good teacher.
as for Horizon...people seem to forget Ashley has the same exact reaction as Kaidan does...granted she tends to get the same response as Kaidan. 'She's boring, xenophobic and racist.' Have to say, I didn't really like her much at first either...but during a recent playthrough I played a religious Shepard who bonded with Ash over their shared faith. Ashley is so much more then what people give her credit for, same with Kaidan.
Sad to say I never finished KotOR, my pc at the time broke down and the new one wouldn't play the game because the new hardware didn't recognize the disc
also if we're talking monotone voices...I always found male Shepard too sound way more monotone then Kaidan ever did, which is the main reason I play female Shepard

Regarding Horizon, large parts of the fandom suffer from a bad case of Fourth Wall Myopia. It's honestly astonishing sometimes how many players can't wrap their heads around the fact that from what Kaidan, and Ashley for that matter, could see is that Shepard wasn't killed and brought back. Shepard's death was faked, so they seemingly endured two years of heartbreak for nothing. All of the information that might have convinced them that Shepard could still be trusted was being actively withheld from them.

All of the information that might have convinced them that Shepard could still be trusted was being actively withheld from them. first time I played I was like 'why are you angry at me, I'm back aren't I?' then in later playthroughs I was like 'yeah...I see your point, I wouldn't trust me either' , and considering what we learn during the Citadel dlc...yeah
I was always surprised people like Garrus and Tali instantly took Shepard as being back a good thing...I mean, for all they know they were a clone or something worse okay...at least Tali questions the fact why you're alive, but provided you did her ME1 quests for the data, she accept it as fact after you say this
then there's Liar-a ...I mean Liara, I get that the creators kind of want to sell the whole 'she's Shep's 'canon' lover/friend' but she could've at least told some people closest to Shepard that they were alive...and being rebuild by the only people who have the technology I mean...why didn't the asari have that technology? A history and culture of thousands of years and we needed to trust Cerberus

Hell, immediately after leaving Horizon the Illusive Man admits that he was purposefully leaking information about Shepard's survival to the Alliance and the Council. I highly doubt those leaks made Shepard look loyal.

Just popping in to say that Kaidan has always been one of my favorite squadmates of the series. He's been on my mind lately, because I have been tinkering with my canon Shepard.
I decided to make her bisexual, due to the allowance of passage of time, spread out over the course of three games. My Shepard was originally straight with a Kaidan to Garrus arc (I have always liked Kaidan's interaction and romance with a mostly-renegade character in ME1), so I orchestrated soulmate-Garrus' tragic death on the Suicide Mission to open up a slot. After trying out Liara and Traynor in the third, I decided to swap it around: utilize Liara in the first (my least favorite of the options in ME1, but it flows well with the console bug during the ME2 prologue, and Liara's continuing spotlight throughout the series), and closing the series with a pair of well-suited Sentinels.
I mean, it seemed criminal to not romance Kaidan, especially as I already dedicated a permanent slot in the squad to him. And, it turns out that Kaidan works really well as new romance in ME3 too.

I have 2 questions I hope someone can answer.
When you are at the hospital and you ask Kaidan how you will get past Horizon Kaidan answers with, "Hey, look... There's a war on--and maybe you and me'll never happen--but I needed you to know that. 'Cause that's how we'll get past Horizon". What does that mean exactly? I have tried to wrap my head around it. What I think it means is, that they should not dwell on the fight because so much is going on, and they should just be happy with what they have already shared. Just forgive and forget, and let it be in the past? Think I am close?
The other question is, when Kaidan is talking about his past with Vyrnnus, he said he replied to him that his father was not in the war because he had retired. He said he had it in for him after that. That is when I he started to cut corners and was pushing hard. So was Kaidan inadvertently responsible for his fellow students well being and deaths, or was the whole thing phrased wrong? It just sounds like it was Kaidan's talk back that pushed Vyrnnus to act the way he did. Or had he done it the entire time and it was only Kaidan he had it in for, again do to some bad phrasing?

It just sounds like it was Kaidan's talk back that pushed Vyrnnus to act the way he did. Or had he done it the entire time and it was only Kaidan he had it in for, again do to some bad phrasing? For the first question...I had to look up a vid on YouTube to find the lines you meant (it's been a while since I played the games, kinda waiting for the LE edition). What I take from his words is, that he wants Shepard to forgive him as much as he wants them to forgive themselves. What happened was beyond their odds, and both said things they didn't mean. He also knows that with everything going on, there's a 50/50 chance one or both of them won't live to see the end, so he keeps his options open, and hopes Shepard will do the same. He does note that he still cares about them, and mentions he'll wait for a chance to be in their lives again, and says he still wants them in his.
For the second question, I don't know if you've read the comics, but in one of them (Foundation issue 4) is about Kaidan's time at Jump Zero, and shows the incident with Rahna that triggered the shut down of the project.
Kaidan's words may have triggered Vyrnus but he wasn't the only student Vyrnus was harsh to, he was harsh to all of them. I think like all teenagers, Kaidan had his snarky side (it still shows in his adult life as well at times), and Vyrnus didn't take kindly to that. I think part of that stems from him having been in the First Contact War, likely having lost a lot of friends and even family to the human forces. People like Vyrnus take that out on other people...in his case, young impressionable humans.
I'll link the comic so you can read it if you like> link

It just sounds like it was Kaidan's talk back that pushed Vyrnnus to act the way he did. Or had he done it the entire time and it was only Kaidan he had it in for, again do to some bad phrasing? 1) Horizon was a roadblock, or a wall. Something mentally and emotionally difficult for Kaidan to get past. By forgiving and forgetting Horizon, that roadblock or wall, was removed and allowed Kaidan and Shepard to grow in their relationship. 2) Vyrnnus was mean to all the students- in fact cruel. Likely because turians and humans still held grudges against each other for the First Contact War. However, Kaidan stood out from the rest because he was smart and top of his class. Vyrnnus was threatened by this and was especially cruel to Kaidan. Kaidan stood up to him which led to the nasty showdown. That's how I understood these two events. Also, welcome!!

I was always under the impression that Vyrnnus had it out for Kaidan specifically, but that didn't mean he would have been any less harsh toward the other students. Even his own men apparently didn't like him, since they delayed getting him treatment after his confrontation with Kaidan; he likely would have survived if he had been treated right away.
On the subject of Foundation, there are a lot of things throughout that series that contradict how events were described in-game. The general sequence of events is probably true, but I think a lot of things are either exaggerated or imagined by Brooks as she's reading over the files.

Literally the only thing I want from MELE *right now* is a comparison slider for Kaidan in ME1. I'm dyyyying to know what he looks like. Hoping for his ME3 model but with no salt and pepper hair. Jet black. Stress free and young. I definitely got nothing against the salt and pepper, hot as hell, but I think it would be good to show him off too before the weight of Reapers, Spectre duties, wrestling with burying his love for Shepard, etc.

And that is even for a shot where he replaced someone else. He is in a shot with the new ME1 female Shepard pointing her gun at the screen, but only a bit of the side, the face not even visible...

*sigh* I always hate how they start contradicting certain things after they've been released I mean...like '[character name] was supposed to be [insert other sexuality then they are currently]'...then why didn't you do that from the start?!
...and I say this as a hetero-sexual woman who's increasingly starting to think she's demi
Also, fair warning to everyone who goes to the link...don't click the comments...you'll thank me later

Just popping in to say that Kaidan has always been one of my favorite squadmates of the series. He's been on my mind lately, because I have been tinkering with my canon Shepard. My Shepard was originally straight with a Kaidan to Garrus arc (I have always liked Kaidan's interaction and romance with a mostly-renegade character in ME1), so I orchestrated soulmate-Garrus' tragic death on the Suicide Mission to open up a slot. After trying out Liara and Traynor in the third...
Hopefully not to disappoint...but I did end up keeping Kaidan->Garrus->Traynor. Kaidan's content in the third game is great, but I just like Kaidan so much more than Liara; I couldn't go through with my plan to swap her in for ME1 and Kaidan for ME3.
I couldn't remember the exact line, so I tried looking it up on youtube, but I could only find paragon Shep videos. Anyway, one of my favorite lines in the first game, is during the Normandy lockdown romance moment, and renegade Shep tells Kaidan to drop and give her ?# pushups, and Kaidan says something along the lines of "finally, a good reason for hard work." I wish I could find the exact quote. Oh well. I will replay it again someday, and enjoy it then.

I wish I could find the exact quote. IIRC it is what Kaidan says. And I usually use that phrase as well to hear that funny one from him. I play renegade Sheps all the time, but when had paragon Sheps that line was there as well, in ME1. First though that could end the romance, but nope - it was just one of interesting dialogues with Kaidan where she showed himself from different sides. I like that. --- And yeah, he is not boring or anything. He thinks things through, tries to understand what is what (like that ME3 ex-cerberus scientists mission e.g.). Not without flaws like every character in games, nothing wrong with that. Still like him, romanced him to have deeper understanding (as usual romance is the best way for deeper understanding of the character). But now, after hell of PTs, prefer Kaidan as a friend. (But like Ash as well, so yeah, miss Ash with Kaidan; miss Kaidan with Ash).

I have read every single post on this thread, and I do mean all of them. Kinda sad that I missed out on so many good discussions because I was late to the Kaidan Alenko fandom. I'm really hoping that Legendary Edition will revitalize this community and we'll be able to discuss Kaidan some more. There probably won't be anything new to discuss since it'll still be the same scenes, but maybe some fresh faces will discover Mass Effect for the first time and find their ways here.

Kaidan: "You have something up your sleeve Shepard? What am I saying, when don't you? That's what I lo- appreciate about you". Shepard: I think you need more practice appreciating me. On the floor and give me 20 Lieutenant"! Kaidan: "Finally, a reason to look forward to physical training". That is the reply you get from the bottom option when Kaidan slips. The top option I think is really cute. "Galaxy in the balance, and you trip talking to me". I might have watched too many Kaidan romance videos on YouTube, and still I can't wait to play in May and experience it for my self.
