If you read the poll results from "SO, YOU WORK AT BIOWARE AND HAVE TO AXE 3 SPECIES FROM ANDROMEDA, WHICH WOULD THEY BE?" in reverse order, you can arguably get the most anticipated or most desired species to include in MEA. I'm not surprised by the top 3 species to get the boot, by popular vote, but I am surprised by the bottom 3. In order or most desired to least, as of this posting: - Turian
- Krogan
- Salarian
Why is turian so desirable? Is it purely on the popularity of Garrus? Krogan and salarian I can rationalize, since each potentially fills an archetypal niche that's always good to have in an assemble cast (noble savage and comedy relief, not necessarily respectively), but I'm not sure why turians top the list. I'm not asking rhetorically -- meaning, I'm not implying that they shouldn't -- I really want to understand. I have my opinion of course and if asked before the poll, I never would have put the turians at the top. Why? These quotes from the poll thread echo my read of the turians brilliantly, so rather than paraphrase clumsily, I'll just post them here: *hides from all the Turian lovers out there* ... Turians -- They are easily one of my most beloved species, but then again they remind me of us during the cold war. Always thinking about who's got the bigger armies, the more advanced tech, smothering the opposition. I don't like that side of myself, and I hope that I never go back there. Never saw turians in general as honorable. There are a whole gaggle of them that are conniving, corrupt, underhanded and often violent scumbags. You have Saren, the first councilor, Lorik Qu'iin, Warren Kuril, Jacobus and I'd even throw General Oraka in there (blackmailing due to being a jilted lover?). Even the "good" one (Garrus) seems to be convinced he has the moral authority to disregard any rule he finds inconvienent (such as due process) and just randomly off people he doesn't like from a sniper perch with no warning. I'll add that the turian member of the Council was arguably the most anti-human and the biggest asshole of the three, and that historically the First Contact war has to have created some extremism on both sides. So, all in all, not a lot of love lost between turians and humans. Is the popularity about wanting some turian/human hostility and drama to be carried over from the Milky Way? That would make sense to me. Have a turian member of the crew always looking for the military option and pushing for conquest and imperialistic options, while others push for more ambassadorial or peaceful options? Although that role might cross up with a krogan member and be a bit redundant, I suppose.

I like their design, I like their society, I like their culture, I like their history, I like their voices, I like their diversity; basically, I like and find just about everything about turians interesting.
While I love Garrus' character, it's not because of him that the turian race is my favorite since I don't like races simply because of individuals of said races.
Note: while the turians do have the hat of military and discipline, I don't feel like those hats sits on the head of every member of the turian race. We see turians like the shopkeeper on the Citadel. We see turians like the politician from Thane's mission. We see turians like the dancing turian from the same mission. We see turians like Warden Kuril. We see turians like Septimus. We see turians like Nihlus. We see turians like Garrus. We see turians like Lilithierax. We see turians with different personalities, moralities and occupations.

I'm more of a fan of the Quarians myself.
My guess is that Turians are probably liked as much as they are due in no small part to Garrus. The Normandy crew plays a big part in who likes the respective species and even the fact that I like Quarians is due partly to liking Tali.

Turians have lots going for them that the other species don't have in terms of uniqueness and relateability.
They're almost always badasses. There's a clearly defined male and female. They're not purely there for fanservice. They have unique looks compared to asari and quarians. Their voices are unique. They have a rich history and have arguably the closest universal bond/tie in with humans. Aside from the councillor, they're typically not stupid/dumb. They can make any weapon awesome from a gameplay perspective.
Salarians and Krogan need a female redesign. Asari should have been redesigned as well to look more androgynous (as I've been saying for years now).

Well, Turians have a bigger role in the ME:A universe than other species. They were arguably the leading specie in the galaxy before Shepard came along.

HE WAS SO COOL GODDAMMIT!!! I think one aspect I love from the Turians the most is they are as diverse as humans are. And at the same time, they don't seem as humanize as Asari are. As shechinah says, we meet all type of Turians, with different personalities, different occupations...

I'm with you. I spent all of ME1 telling him that vigilantism is wrong and him agreeing with me. As soon as Shepard's "dead" he goes off to become a vigilante. Fuck that guy. The a cop cum vigilante sniper takes over the Normandy's main weaponry? I'd prefer a hips weapons man for that thanks. No wonder they always needed recalibrating.

You can make a parallel to the process of the player discovering the Mass Effect world and the appearance of Turians. A Turian is the first alien we meet in the trilogy. He's tall, predatory looking and speaks in cryptic threats. Shepard's dialogue options mostly funnel into hostility. This gives the player an innate feeling of distrust to those not human.
However it's Turians that introduce us to the moral grey of the galaxy and the common 'humanity' of the Mass Effect species. When Saren shoots Nihlus we're introduced to the bad guy and he's not a bad guy because he's a Turian, he's just a bastard, poor Nihlus can attest to that. This in a sense becomes the first time we as the player see a species as individuals rather than big bad aliens.
Species relations became even more nuanced as the series went along but it was with this intro that Mass Effect distinguished itself from 'shoot the aliens' sci-fi like Halo to 'Shoot the bastards' sci-fi. .

Because Turians are badass.
And I like how people don't want to see Geth/Quarians(at least in that thread, that actually matches BioWare's behind closed doors survey and sample, look it up), since their story is completely done, the "omg quarians are ship experts" is overused and arguably not even spot on, yeah, they keep their junk fleet floating(some ships are just too old), wow, such feat. People liked Tali, but the whole race is boring, fragile and arguably useless for intergalactic travel and especially exploration. I mean we've seen how good explorers they are, getting rekt by a pack of varren(ME2 side quest), the big alien from the EA play video could smash a whole quarian squad. Not sure about drell, people probably like them the least out of the options in that poll.

Why would you NOT want Turians in the game?
They're the most useful aliens.
1st aliens that worked together with humans vs Reapers.
It was a TURIAN idea to get the Krogans involved in the Reaper War.
Turians don't bs around unlike sissy asari

Imagine walking through ME3 again.
Salarian home world gets jumped by a small faction of humans.
Krogans are pretty badAZZ, but they can barely resist killing each other.
Asari are a bunch of indecisive pansies. Their delayed action results Thessia being the most f'd home world.
Turians are putting up an effective effort against the Reaps.
Half of Mass Effect is about shooting people and blowing stuff up. You want to have the best soldier along.

Badass brothers in arms or studs.
Studs? Go to archive of our own or fanfiction net, Garrus/femShep romance nearly 4000 stories, greater than all other pairings. Women really liked Garrus. Read some of them or the highest rated ones and find out some interesting fancanon lore about turian male anatomy and sexual practices
