It's a tie between Liam and Zaeed for me. I picked Liam because Zaeed is DLC (free iirc, but still).  Also, Zaeed gets less interaction because of it.  He didn't feel like a "full" squadmate.  I'd have probably picked Zaeed, otherwise.

Voted for Jacob. He's neither dumb nor annoying, which is an achievement given the circumstances.

James is one of the best squadmates period. As insecure and overcompensating on the inside as he is indestructible on the outside. That divide created so much great banter and dialog and plenty hilarious moments. Then you remember that the guy is basically suicidal because he is the sole survivor of a mission that was rendered pointless by Shepard's own actions. The way all of this works together within the context of a student/mentor relationship between Shepard and James is as brilliant as anything written in the Mass Effect games. And the payoff is good. Appropriately, James doesn't seek comfort in the Commander's bed (at least not before that pathetic bit in the Citadel DLC), but Vega's low key hero worship of Shepard (which he tries to hide and compensate for with an exaggerated irreverence) means that the Commander can, in the end, make or break Vega's efforts to become the legend that he has all the ability to be

Kaidan is OP on Insanity. James is close second.

Zaeed is a badass mercenary with a great backstory, but I kind of wish there was some more content with him in ME2. James was okay, whereas Liam seems like a pretty cool guy, even if his accent needs getting used to (had the same problem with Sera, but that's a different story). I like Jacob well enough, but he's just... well, there.

James Vega. As a support role, I found him to be a surprisingly enjoyable character throughout the dower tone of Mass Effect 3. He was basically the only one that managed to have any lighthearted banter with the other companions on the ship, and looking back, that was with almost all of them. He'd play cards with Kaidan, or shoot the shit with Garrus, fumble through conversations with Javik, and of course all of his dialogue with Cortez.

Second place goes to Zaeed, despite my opinion that he's easily one of the shallowest companions in his respective game and perhaps the entire franchise, in retrospect. He doesn't really anything particularly meaningful to talk about. Once his revenge story bit is over, his character basically stops cold since he has no proper dialogue on the Normandy or anywhere else. That said, I can at least enjoy having him around because he's colorful and amusing, even if he doesn't really stick with me as a character.

Third would go to Liam. He's definitely a problematic character, but I can at least enjoy having him around from time to time. At this point though, being third place when it comes to the human male companions of Mass Effect doesn't mean much when the options aren't all that stellar to begin with.

Kaidan deserves notable mention, but I just cannot muster enough enthusiasm about him to keep him alive past Virmire. I think that his content in ME3 is better than Ashley's, but Ashley's content, to me, is better than his in ME1, so unfortunately, he rarely makes it through to the end.

Zaeed, him and my paragade Shepard worked so well together. I'd give Kaiden and Liam honourable mentions, and damn Jacob gets no love at lmao

1)James - Still average as a squadmate character, but surprisingly enjoyable and I wanted for m/m.
2)Kaidan - Didn't go the way I wanted him to (same with Ashley), but points for m/m added (as problematic as how it went) and I'm not really a 'Kaidan is boring' person
3)Liam - I don't hate him (at least as much as others). There's problems sure, but also IMO lessons learned about the process and I appreciate some stuff going on with him. I like him enough that I think sidelining him in a MEA2 would be a mistake, but I'm OK with him not being a squadmate if that has to happen.
4)Zaeed - By default, I just like him more than Jacob.
5)Jacob - Failure character. And just gets worse. Which sucks because there's perfectly great ideas behind him, only to fail to stereotyping and tokenism (imo), sloppy progression, sidelining the actually interesting aspects. How the hell was this allowed to happen? (in ME2 but especially ME3 compounding it)

In the end there isn't a human male squadmate I'd put in a top list (of the total of ~25 main squadmates so far) unless it was maybe a Top 10. Certainly not Top 5.

I think a great thing in a next game would be a scifi 'KISA'. A bi (and not 'retcon bi' like Kaidan at least kinda was) or impressively, gay human male that turns out to be one of the favorites of many players.

I don't need it all the time. This isn't me demanding a quota every game. Its my describing my wish and what I think would work great.

Then game after that can have kickass straight male favorite, I don't care, go ahead haha.
