It seems human male squad mates are the least popular in every ME game. But who is the best out of them? The biggest fault stated tends to be blandness. Opinions wary and many people like Jacob for being stoic and Kaidan for being drama-free (at least during ME1), but even then, the more interesting aliens tend to take the n:o 1 place. James obviously suffered from being a noob-guide for the third installment in a series. However, from what I've heard and read, Zaeed is a big exception and a lot of people like him. I won't lie either: Zaeed is one of my favorite squad mates on the whole. I haven't seen much love for him on these forums, though, and I expect Kaidan will lead the poll here, should anybody vote. This is probably a shaky theory, but I wonder if male humans are deliberately left slightly subdued lest they outshine the Player Character Protagonist. I remember some people actually being upset that James had bigger muscles than m!Shepard before ME3 came out, so I don't think this idea is altogether baseless; there really are people who really don't want any "competition". However, Zaeed was a badass renegade merc and much beloved, so I think BioWare would do well to just write memorable and unrestrained human male squad mates without worrying them stealing the protag's spotlight. The extremely over-the-top Jack could just as well be a guy and imagine if Cora was a man who wanted to train with the asari? I thought this up on the fly and will probably regret posting it, but ef it. Just vote for your favorite, people. For universal statistics released by BioWare, in ME3 Kaidan was the least used squaddie (1,5%), whereas James was the third most popular (16,8%). These numbers are of course affected by James always being on the squad and Kaidan potentially being virmired. I don't think BW released any info on this for ME 1 and 2. Sorry for not including Jenkins, but I don't want joke answers taking over the poll. P.S. I'm not native English speaker. Which one is correct, "human male squad mate" or "male human squad mate"?

I voted Liam, because compared to everyone else he actually made me warm up to him significantly as the game progressed and became MORE interesting by the end.
Every other human male did worse and worse with more screen time.
I ended up openly detesting Kaidan after Horizon and outright hating him when he said he "forgives me" for cheating on him when my One True Love who btw told me he'd watch over Kaidan in the hospital was slowly suffocating... That's ye very best of a human male right there.
Jacob and James were just bland & boring with a couple Okay scenes after which they went back to bland and boring.
And Zaeed was cool to meet and had great armor set, but became bland & boring.

I went for Kaidan as he's the one i didn't dislike, not that he was in any way a favourite character of mine. James openly annoyed me, had no respect for Jacob or Liam and Zaeed seemed trying too much to be cool.

I like pretty much all of them. Liam and Kaidan are actually decently high on my favorites list. I still haven't warmed up entirely to Zaeed to the point where I love him unironically (or something), but he's guddamn precious to me, too. I... Well, I tolerate Jacob, but he's the only one where I'll grant that he's tedious as all get out. Only sane man is a vital role, but it's better with someone who's aware of their position.
Which brings me to my favorite of the human male squaddies, James. "But trilobitederby!" you say. "You can't even make out with him, besides one dubious DLC incident! He's such a dudebro! He's new and shiny and only has one game." Okay, yes, but he's hilarious. And decently grounded. I feel like the classic role of human male squadmate is supporting rock, and James is an excellent one. Who quips and does his own thing.

This is probably a shaky theory, but I wonder if male humans are deliberately left slightly subdued lest they outshine the Player Character Protagonist. This is what I've always believed. "We don't need a hot human male squad mate, because we already have that." Kaidan was wonderful in ME1, but barely around (and antagonistic) in ME2 and 3. I fell for James despite all my preconceptions, but he ended up being non-romancable. So... kind of torn between those 2 for the poll. The massive ME1 fan in me wouldn't forgive myself if I don't vote Kaidan, but since he's bi and therefore is going to win by a landslide, I'm going to vote James.

Kaidan My gay Shepard romance with him was my favorite play through everrrrr. Had some head canon that they had feelings for each other since the first game, but never had a chance to act on it, until finally in ME3 where they link up, and it was just the most right thing. Ugh, I loved it, it was so perfect and sweet and cute. ^___^ Zaeed is second though, just a total badass. In that same play through, he was one of my top guys. Could always rely on Zaeed, went well with that Shepard too, cuz he was a straight up renegade. Buut with a bit of a soft spot, specifically for Kaidan xD.

If I have to pick one, it's Liam so I voted him, for me he is one of the best human characters, he is funny and has a great personality that fits so well with my Ryder. Honestly, for me he is the most human with his flaws and mistakes because no one is perfect and I like that . My second favorite human male squadmate would be Kaidan, he's a nice guy as well.

Zaeed. My favorite unrepentant badass. All the other male squad mates should make an effort to be more like Zaeed, and he himself should have had full squadmate dialogue in ME2 and a bigger role in ME3.
I also like James quite a bit, he's just a good guy to have around both on and off the battlefield.
I have no feelings of any kind for Kaidan and Jacob, and actively avoid Liam.

Kaidan isn't just my favorite "male human character" in Mass Effect, nor is he just my favorite Mass Effect character in general. He's my favorite character in all of fiction. I adore that man. P.S. I'm not native English speaker. Which one is correct, "human male squad mate" or "male human squad mate"? Both are correct, but "human male" is probably the preferred way to say it.

I really like Liam. He is definitely not bland - if anything, he has one of the most in-your-face and unusual personalities in the squad. He is a total bro to all my Ryders, filling the "beloved idiot sibling" void while the twin is in coma

He is a total bro to all my Ryders, filling the "beloved idiot sibling" void while the twin is in coma He sits with either Ryder in SAM node and he checks on the coma twin to keep the Pathfinder updated on his/her condition. Liam was also very upset when SAM suggested killing Ryder, when they were trapped by the Archon. He really does show that he cares about people and he tries to do something about it.

Honestly?
Liam.
Jacob. I mean, we all know this one... He is so boring and one note, let alone who he is to all the poor people out there who romanced him. He had the potential to be so much more with the skills he had and his previous relationship with Miranda but he just came off as so boring. The greatest thing about him was that his father is voiced by Dave Fennoy.
Zaeed... Maybe if he had more content I would have liked him. I didn't like him. I thought he was too forced and his loyalty mission made me want to leave him for dead every single time. I know a lot of people love the guy, but I just don't.
James. You are the absolute worst human squadmate. Honestly, your personality isn't that bad. If you came into the game in ME2, I might like you. However, he shows up at the beginning of ME3 and is forced to already know Shepard and be friendly with him. He acts very unprofessionally with Shepard and he's reckless. Besides that, like Kai Leng, who I also dislike strongly, his backstory and character is developed outside the games in something I have never and likely will never, experience. So I don't care about him. He should have been developed in game. He took the spot on our team when one of the plethora of other well established characters SHOULD have taken that spot.
Kaiden. I never disliked Kaiden. In fact, I kind of liked him. He was a little bit on the boring side compared to everyone else in ME1, but I definitely liked him still. However, his primary flaw is that I like Ashley a lot more and I romanced her in ME1. So Kaiden, I'm sorry but you have never survived Virmire for me, and I've never seen anything else from you. You died heroically so you are my second favorite human squadmate.
Now as for Liam. I didn't care for him at all the first time I played MEA and I in fact expressed that on the boards here. However, upon my second playthrough, I took a new appreciation for him. He's young and a bit cocky, but really at his core, he's terrified he's going to fail, the Andromeda Initiative was a mistake and he wants desperately to do everything he can to prove himself and correct the sinking ship of the AI. He had a good life back in the Milky Way; supportive and loving family, lots of friends, and he was doing something that he enjoyed. He left it all behind to make his mark, and he's having that low gut churning feeling... that 'oh crap, I've made a huge mistake and things are really bad' moment that I'm sure so many of us have had. So he overcompensates. He tries to come up with plans without waiting on Ryder to tell him what to do and makes mistakes.
He's a fully fleshed out character. Which is something no other male human character has been in this series, in my opinion.. At least not in their first foray in the series. He's flawed but he's earnest. He genuinely wants to help and make things better for everyone. He's a well rounded character but still maintaining a lot of room for growth and improvement.
Honestly, I do think that Liam is the best written human male squad mate the series has had to date. Besides that, his team banter is amusing, especially with Drack and Jaal and his loyalty mission is one of the most fun in the game. I think all around Liam is a good character that finally breaks the cycle I've had of finding every single human male companion to be a major drag that ends up just sitting and guarding the ship.

I picked James, with Zaeed as a close second. I think Zaeed is awesome, but the lack of ambient banter and conversations between missions knocks him back slightly. James is a total dudebro, but he's also a good guy and pretty funny. Plus, I love his friendship with Steve - he looks out for him like a brother, which is really sweet. Poor Kaidan would get higher than third place if the poor guy made it past Virmire in any of my PTs. Liam is alright (I found his loyalty mission banter to be hilarious, to be honest), but given they I've ditched the game halfway through I can't say much more. Jacob is just...well, Jacob.

I voted for Kaidan, I love that guy! I don't mind that he's not some super interesting member of alien specie that I want to learn about. I am fine with him being that fairly normal (well, Biotic complications aside), nice guy that is dedicated, tries hard, and is sympathetic due to his experiences. It is really fun to romance him in the first game as a largely Renegade Shepard. My canon actually went Liara (as a plot device, though I don't hate her) to Garrus for romance, but I save Kaidan and use him again in the third entry. I have been planning on running an alternate for a while now, which will be male Shep romancing Kaidan in the third game, since I haven't seen his romance content for that game yet.

Gotta go with Kaidan, though he wouldn't be my first pick to hang out with.
In ME1 I appreciated how no-nonsense and professional he was without being one of those insufferable military types. He was one of the few Alliance crew that was hesitant to get too chummy with his commanding officer, as opposed to Vega who tries to give Shepard a nickname and gets upset when you don't allow it.
My Shepard really started to get annoyed with Kaidan by ME3 when Kaidan refused to let up about Cerberus, and I loved that I was able to have that conflict with the character. Being able to shut down the conversation on Mars and put him in his place was very gratifying and made the Eva smackdown scene more poignant since Shep's possibly last conversation with him could have been very negative. Gave great motivation to work to try to patch things up and build trust with him again back on the Citadel as he recovered and made the Udina scene a little more powerful once he decides to trust you again. After that point he was a friend again and resumed his role on the ship as being the no-nonsense professional I remembered in ME1. My Shep and him never got to be best buds, but they eventually had a really strong work relationship that resonated with me much more than any of the other human male relationships save for Joker and Anderson.
