NO shits given. Mac's direction was a ball and chain on this game when it was already struggling. Here's why, and I know Mac's tendencies enough to know what he's probably responsible for, especially when the article reaffirms it! - SAM + Ryder + Mac saying "One of the original big ideas of the trilogy was "organics vs synthetics"" like a moron. = Organics & Synthetics, original idea -Mac Walters- Meridian = Crucible + Synthesis = The one-button-fix-everything-with-magic device.^ This is the crux of Mac's "new vision" I bet because as it says in the article, nothing else had been fleshed out than these "High-level" ideas, and to quote Mac from the ME3 days. "Keep it high-level!"
Fuck him. Fire him. Also the Spender-questline was a nice touch, and Aaryn-Addison Flynn defensively saying "But Spender helps, that's better than nothing!" despite Spender being a grade-A Mac-Walters-Hack who'd do anything to keep his job and sabotage the work that had to get done while his friend-boss sticks up for him to the displeasure of everybody else. Mac is an idiot, and I can't believe people are still sometimes defensive about him because you should know by now that he's an idiot. He only gets to be as high up on the ladder as he is because of BioWare's rampant nepotism and immature leadership. He has the directional/storytelling capabilities of a fucking 10-year-old.

Sounds like Mac Walters deserves some credit. That was my biggest takeaway from that article. Mac seems to have a lot of blame for MEA directed toward him, but if the article is accurate about when and why he came to MEA sounds like he actually pulled everything together as best it could be.

Interesting read. While I've actually enjoyed the game, it clearly wasn't ready to go on release. The patches have helped a lot and I have to imagine if they had waited to release until this summer/fall it would've been received a lot better.
We could see a lot of signs of the troubled development but it was always difficult to tell as fans just how troubled it was. I also think the secretive approach to releasing information was more related to being behind schedule than a cohesive strategy. Makes you wonder whether the forum closure was related as well but that was probably just a long time coming.
I hope we get more ME games in the future. I think they could do a lot with MEA2 if it ever happens.

Eh, Kotaku has had its share of fake or controversial stories. Not saying that this story is false, but I am skeptical. Some "funny" articles from Kotaku in the past: - Why were there no women in the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan? (seriously??) - Should Killing Women in Online Games Be Considered Rape? (Seriously???) - How Animal Crossing Triggered A Rape Flashback They also had false articles about Steam Not a single one of those are actual real articles. Every one you listed are made up by trolls....

So they wasted time talking and not doing after a lot of people left, then had 18mo to do anything they actually could while understaffed. And the reason it was released at all before it was ready, I speculate, EA wanted a return; there was no 'option to delay for another 6 months.' Because if there was, it was really really really stupid not to. Once again, as I said in another thread. Look at the release date. It was virtually the last order call for the fiscal year of 2016. That's all one has to know to understand why they couldn't delay for another 6 months. Then it was dumb to tell us it was an option because it makes them look idiotic when the game was released in the state it was.

Unlike the "OMFG MASS EFFECT IS DEAD GUISE!!!1" article Loltaku put out earlier, this one actually makes sense to read. Of course though, sources go unnamed and I doubt any other publication will corroborate the information therein because apparently Schreier has sources nobody else does (riiight), just like his earlier article. It definitely puts the missing pieces together and makes some sense as to why the game was launched in the condition that is was, but Loltaku's continuous "the game was nothing but a disappointment" is just blatantly untrue. I will take this one, once again, with a huge grain of... People individually can like the game or not, I'm sure you can find people that liked the Sonic game too. Hell, this is the internet. You can find whole groups of people that like anything. Literally anything. Please don't make me post examples for you. That said, the collective reviews and responses for MEA are, at best, Lukewarm. You individually liking the game doesn't make that untrue. True, but the reception of anything doesn't effect my nor other people's enjoyment of a product at all. The last time I gave a shit as to what some holier-than-though critic thought was so long ago that I honestly don't remember. So many people are disappointing with the 4th and 5th estates as they have turned into bullshit factories that lots of people ignore them these days.

Mass Effect is dead, then. Not even 6 months and they already treat it as the sad tale of gaming. The same treatment of Aliens: Colonial Marines.

Sounds legit. And if it's legit, I'm surprised they even managed to put out a half decent game. I had fun playing it. Nothing really memorable, but fun nonetheless. yeah sounds legit to me as well. Still despite it's problems you've got to give some credit to the guys that worked on it in that it's still a fairly decent game even if it didn't turn out the way they wanted. But from now on I think it shows that consistency is key to developing a game such as this. DAI didn't suffer from anything like this and that is a really solid game . It just needs to come together better next time. Unfortunately it has resulted in MEA becoming a bit of a stinker but every company ends up with a game like that once in a while a game to forget. All the ycan do is pick up the pieces and try to make a better fist of it on the next one. Whilst I agree it's not Bioware's finest moment but the game's still fun enough and hopefully it'll follow a similar tradition to DA2 and have a couple of decent DLC's to make up for it so that it doesn't become a total loss. Except Inquisition was the worst game they have made since 2005.... and it had everything to make it good. i'd buy another title from Montreal ME team sight unseen, but I will be surfing reviews for months before I decide on purchasing DA4, and I will be asking -was it done right like in Andromeda? Or did they screw it up like Inquisition? honestly, I feel sometimes that the world is really odd.

I stopped reading at this:
Because aside from the negative folk and haters in this forum, I have come across far more (by far more I would say probably hundreds and that is just the ones who bother to post about it) people that like or love it. This forum seems to have an inordinate amount of people that dislike it and they dwell on it because they just don't have a life or know how to focus on things they like or maybe they don't have things they like because they spend their time on things they don't like. Whatever the case, they just live in the negative and hang out here or keep coming back here or search the web for more things they don't like. What is most striking to me is that these people have something they are unhappy about and instead of finding things they are happy about to focus on instead, they stay stuck on what they don't like. This leads me to wonder if their dislike about the game is simply that they are unhappy people who can only find things they don't like. Glass half empty people who like to complain and just don't know how to or don't want to or don't try to pay attention to anything enjoyable therefore everything become misery because that is literally all they can see. And it basically invalidates everything they have to say because they are so focused on the negatives that when there are positives, they are not be able to see them. My guess is these people are not particularly happy or else they would be spending their time focused on those things rather than sitting around bitching about a game.
Kotoku understands this and therefore is writing these articles as click bait. Whatever the development cycle was doesn't matter. That initial statement that I quoted is simply not true. A lot of people like this game. A lot of people like this game a lot. They just don't come here, probably because this place has so many bitchers and whiners and complainers that it detracts from their fun of enjoying the game. So the forum has been overrun with bitchers and whiners and complainers only to have a small group that actually hang here because they love the game. I know who most of them are because I have seen them in posts. The are the same people and they repeatedly focus on the things they love about this game which supports my original hypothesis. Focus on what you don't like and you get more of that and find more of those people. Focus on what you do like and you get more of that and find those people.

I guess that largely depends on two questions. One, if something's already in the works and close to the finish lines, it will be published. I suspect, since they heavily hinted on it in the main game, the quarian DLC could fall into that category. Secondly, what kind of revenue do they expect from developing another SP DLC?

Sounds like Mac Walters deserves some credit. Mac Walters might have saved Mass Effect. At least, for those who didn't like the game, from being way worse than it was. The thought of this makes me ROFL, it's my favourite part of the article.

weLl, I've read it. It's the spin one puts on it. from where I sit this is a story of a young team managing impossible expectations and putting out a surprisingly good game despite everything. And the company that despite a barrage of hate and criticism, provided absolutely everything that has ever been asked (and not nicely) and fast in the post-release. Even extra romantic option. I have never seen anything like that before, so much credit given to the fans. I come from the age when Gaider told people it is the way it is, suck it up, buttercup. But they made those impossible expectations themselves. The creative leads made up a massive scope they could never achieve, failed to make a compelling vertical slice, and then had to scramble to release a mostly functional generic action adventure game. Are you implying that Andromeda isn't a formulaic mess? Even if it wasn't another bog standard open world game, it's got practically the same structure as Inquisition, but with even worse bugs. I don't know how you can make a great distinction here, let alone put Andromeda on top.

Still to me and most people Inquisition is a better game than Andromeda in every aspect, and it had less time in development and was the teams first meet with Frostbite. Much better. And that's even leaving out the lackluster companions MEA provided us with as compared to the ones in Inquisition.

Frostbite seems to keep being the problem (not bad just not fit for purpose).
Dragon Age Inquisition appears to have had a turbulent development and got away with it. Mass Effect Andromeda less so.
I like both games.
Dragon Age Inquisition has more issues than the GOTY awards credit and is saved largely by its characters. Mass Effect Andromeda is a better game than the launch memes suggest and whilst the criticism was mostly fair, some of it was over-zealous.
Both games appeared to be pressured developments:
Dragon Age Inquisition got away with it. Mass Effect Andromeda got caught out.

I don't know how you can make a great distinction here, let alone put Andromeda on top. Are you kidding me? Andromeda has awesome areas with ROADS (honestly, any game with ROADS destroys Inquisition's score in my chart of preferences), fun to drive vehicle, and great planetary story. It has a variety of side missions that offset the gather quests. Everyone is voiced in Andromeda. The main story is clear, split away from a bog of areas. And, unlike Inquisition that crushes my PC every second time I play it, has a cutscene that never triggers, Andromeda was bug free and crushed... never. Also, everyone looks at least good enough in Andromeda, but in Inquisition, gods, by they are so ugly. And, I had an awesome romance in Andromeda (and would have it no matter which Ryder I created), while Inquisition did not let me play the character I wanted to play if I wanted a good romance. Gods, I've already played Andromeda twice, and I barely made myself finish Inquisition. Oh, and MP... did 10 hours in Andromeda, just read the info on DA one... and never even dared to load it. And for character building & fighting, OMG, Andromeda is frigging gamegasm, while Inquisition both sucks AND locks you out of specialization trees with some idiotic gathering.
EDIT: And the ending, OMG, the ending! Andromeda gave me a cool ending, everything was awesome, and the Trespasser SUCKED.
Save for playing as a different race, there is nothing else I liked about Inquisition. Just... mess.

It's a matter of taste the big factor for me that holds MEA back is the fact it's kind of full of bugs and at times is unstable. Obviously the changes they've made are improving that but it could and should really have been better than that in the first place.

Dragon Age Inquisition got away with it. Mass Effect Andromeda got caught out. As a player of both, I can only say rightfully so in both instances. I liked to play Andromeda, I consider it to be a decent game, but it doesn't hold a candle to DAI, far as I am concerned.

Something tells me you might have some issues with Mac Walters.

Really sad story to be honest. ME universe is giving so many wonderful possibilities to create absolutely top class games, but i know very well how things look like when you are just another payroll number in big corporation. I've been for a long time a part of absolutely amazing team, we did a lot of great stuff, but then people "in charge", who didn't even know our names came with new "ideas" and less than a year after our team was a history... I just feel sorry for the people who put so much effort in MEA - sacrificing their own free time, family life etc. . That also give me some idea why people like Casey left at some point.

You're pretty much alone in that opinion, which is fine. To each their own and you do you. Still to me and most people Inquisition is a better game than Andromeda in every aspect, and it had less time in development and was the teams first meet with Frostbite. yeah it probably was really the only thing that MEA has probably done better than DAI is probably hairstyles as I have to admit the female hairstyles in MEA I like a lot or at ;least a lot more than the options we got for DAI but that aside I'd say DAI has ended up trumping MEA in terms of general overall quality.
