1) Liara - Just the relationship through the three games. Got may ass kicked by a Krogan numerous times trying to save her lol. The mind melding during the squad meetings, the conversations, the way she was woven into her story from being a Prothean expert you needed, to her mother being in league with Saren, to LOTSB, she was an awesome well written character romanced or not. She literally grew up over the course of the series from being a somewhat naive teen in the first game to hardened by circumstances by the end. But some of this may be bringing in the comics as well, but she went to hell and back for Shepard, never gave up on him/her.

2) Garrus - If your life was on the line and you could only make one vid call, Garrus would be there to pick up and come to your aid. First time I did the suicide mission and had to pick someone to trust to lead the fire teams, it was Garrus without hesitation. Another one of those friendships that went past being romanced or not.

3) Wrex - Set the tome for all Krogan characters that followed. Someone who was badass without having to tell everyone they were badass. The scene on ME2 when you're pushing though everyone to get to each other was awesome, and so was the Genophage arc in ME:3.

Liara - The best video game girlfriend ever. While I wasn't the biggest fan of her naive innocent space virgin shtick in Mass Effect 1, I found myself both terrified and aroused by her in ME2 LOTSB.


She's the closest anyone gets to comparatively being Shepard's equal...not necessarily in skills and leadership but by sheer will power and agency. She finds Shepard after the Collector attack, she deliver's him/her to Cerberus, she creates her own shadow network, she finds the blueprints on Mars needed to defeat the Reapers...most of the characters in the OT are helpless without Shepard, but she manages to find her own way of doing things. When Shepard breaks down after Kaidan/Ashley get badly beaten by android Laura Bailey, Liara's the one to snap Shepard out of it and keep them focused. Her journey from a weak scarred girl to an empowered strong willed woman was easily one of the top highlights of the trilogy. She's definitely my favorite romance and even if other people hate it, I like the fact that there's an implied unrequited love she share's for non-Liaramanced Shepards. That's sometimes the side effect on going through some incredible adversity alongside someone. While she doesn't have the best character arc (arguably that award goes to Mordin) she definitely has the most growth over the three games and is the most loyal and steadfast companion in the whole series.


Garrus - He's space Batman. He's the first bromance I've seen in a video game. He was so boring and one note in ME1, but by the end of Mass Effect 2 he was my Shepard's brother. Being stuck on the Normandy not being able to really trust most of the crew made Garrus' presence all the more essential, I found in him a confidant that I could always rely on to give me a no BS assessment and watch my six. You can just tell how much more relaxed Shepard's dialogue is around ME2 Garrus compared to other companions.


Scott Ryder - The most solid voice acting in a Bioware protagonist. The most human too. It's a shame the character didn't get to interact with the more interesting cast of the OT because I'd loved to see that voice/personality play off characters like Wrex and Mordin. He exudes excitement and spirit. He's the underdog I always wanted to play in a Bioware game that manages to be humorous without being overbearing or a sociopath like Funny Hawke. While the events that happen around him in Andromeda aren't the most interesting, and the character himself doesn't have a lot of personal struggle that makes for good drama I just love how natural they come off.
