there's no earthly reason we PC players need a button to bring up the command console. That button is right in the middle of the control keys, and can't be reassigned somewhere else. What happens too often is that in the middle of combat, the game stops responding to keys because the console key was accidentally pressed. That is usually not good.
Kindly get rid of it.

The tilde key is a staple of pc gaming. It stays. But you're right. I hit that damn thing all the time and it's always in combat.

Never once hit that button in combat. If it's in the middle of your control keys. Then you got one funky keyboard.

Gaming mouse and moving the mic chat (in ME3) from Tab to CTRL pretty much eliminated the problem for me. I don't ever use the weapon wheel in SP, so the Tab key doesn't get used, other than to fast forward through the planet scanning graphic.
I understand why the key is in PC gaming, but it would be useful if BioWare added an option in key bindings to disable the console function of the key. Then, both folks who use the console and folks who don't would have an option to match their desires.
Lacking that, friends I have, who use keys instead of mouse buttons for powers and consumables, either use other means to adapt ... or suffer the consequences. Typically (like last night) they hit the ~ key when trying to use the 1 key for one of their powers. One friend took a travel size shampoo cap, sliced it in half and used the top half to cover the key. The shampoo cap was small enough to fit between the Tab and 1 key, but large enough to cover the ~ key and prevent accidental activation. Others just pry the ~ key off their keyboard. Me ... I just use my gaming mouse's programmable buttons.

Hitting the Esc has the tilde key in the way. I'm not sure you all understand what OP is actually saying..

There has to be a means of accessing the console. For the record, I pop the key off the KB whenever I'm actually playing vs messing around with console commands.

It's removable on mine so no breaking involved, though if I had gotten frustrated enough that wouldn't be out of the question.

When I play FPS or action-RPGs like Mass Effect, I use a separate gaming keypad. My favorite is the Nostromo S52 and a Razer Tartarus. I feel so much more in control and I never need the keyboard except for the ESC key. Tilde usually has a gap above it to distinguish itself from the ESC and Function keys.

Well you could use Autohotkey and write a macro the would send the input of pushing the tilde key to some other key like say NumLock. Anytime you pressed the key the NumLock would activate or deactivate. Console problem gone.
Simple enough: Run Autohotkey Type in text field: Tilde::NumLock Save. Convert to exe. Run the exe ... tilde issue fixed... and ironically if you think of a better key to bind it too you may actually gain a usable key.
Hope that helps.

You whip out a keycap puller, remove the tilde key, play, then put the key back on? I'm sorry, but you're full of fucking shit.

Don't let it be reassigned to something else but you should be able to disable it as a binding.

Is it really that hard to just hit " again in case you hit it once by mistake? No, because that is <shift>+2 . I usually hit the ` when a fight has become a bit intense, and the first thing I notice is that hitting the number keys doesn't do anything. After many hours of playing I now know to check for the screen console, but at the start it was a major cause of death.

Truth Got a keycap puller with mine, and only takes a few seconds to pull off my tilde key when I start hitting it too much. If I ever need it again I can always push it back on. Or just hit the post where the key slides over for that matter.

You could just use software like sharpkeys or keytweak to disable it.

If you're truly master race, you figure out (read: google) how to edit your config files to change bindings that aren't included in the game's GUI.
Seriously though, what's the console mapped to in ME:A that it's such a problem with doing other actions?
