I played the beta this weekend and I got tired of it fairly quickly. That's the problem. The game massively lacks content. ATM it has very little staying power

I played the beta this weekend and I got tired of it fairly quickly. That's the problem. The game massively lacks content. ATM it has very little staying power I saw a trailer for the game some time ago (E3 maybe?) and even then it didn't seem like there was much to it beyond neverending hack and slash, so I kept my expectations rather low. In the end, the game just doesn't have any kind of hook to keep me going. The combat mechanics aren't totally awful, but for the way it works It'd have to have some substance to the whole setting to get past how repetitive it is.

For Honor

One last post for this. You shouldn't be comparing MnB or Chivalry to this game. For Honor is VASTLY different. The only similarity is looking-direction based inputs.
For Honor's combat relies on combos, parry/deflects/dodging, guardbreaks, throwing, mind games/feints, unblockable attacks, stamina management/depleting enemy's stamina and throwing him on the floor, active and passive abilities/builds which are different for every hero, stats management / loadouts, using revenge mode & baiting, thoughtful choice of execution animations (cut head off = prevent revive but receive less hp boost), thoughtful use of the lock on/off mechanic to bait or creatively create combos, and the list goes on and on and on...
Mordhau, MnB, Chivalry and Kingdom Come fans can f away.
That said, I've spent a hundred hours with the tech test and this beta and the game was starting to become repetitive. Just like I became bored with Evolve after a hundred hours. The game is still very solid though and has plenty of depth to it.
edit: sorry about the format, from mobile

Cautiously observing for now, I'm not willing to spend money on a very limited gameplay loop (Unless it's fantastic like Overwatch)

Tempted to try this game out, but don't own a controller and 50 euros just for a controller seems like a hefty price, especially when you just use it for one game

Is it 2 player on console? I was watching Conan and he was playing Brady and other players and it looked like one screen?

Is it 2 player on console? I was watching Conan and he was playing Brady and other players and it looked like one screen? Unfortunately no. Originally the game was supposed to have split-screen online/off-line capability but Ubisoft cut out that mechanic. On the bright side though, the devs have said that they still plan on the campaign being playable online co-op if you want.

Yeah the open beta for this might actually get me back on my Xbox and away from my XCOM 2 Long War 2 campaign for a bit. I enjoyed the private beta so this upcoming demo is just going to help scratch that For Honor itch until the 14th. Got my tax refund back so I went ahead and splurged on the Gold Edition, I'm generally not one for pre-ordering, but I feel the gameplay is solid, and I might as well snag the season pass while I have the money.

The game continues to be complete garbage. It's just fucking dumbed down, MOBA-fied Mount and Blade with half the content and triple the price.
There are so many fundamentally flawed mechanics in it that I could write a fucking essay on it.

You lose stamina for performing attacks (even if they hit your opponent) but not for defending from attacks. It puts an incentive on defensive play. Lock on combat which neuters 1vX. This is pretty much the biggest grievance I have with the game. It's intentionally dumbed down so that it'll work on consoles. You have to rely on the revenge system which is an absolute garbage workaround in order to fight 1vX, and even then you're still probably fucked. Dumb fucking MOBA abilities that are next to impossible (if not outright impossible) to avoid. Outright unavoidable damage that typically comes from defensive play, which simply ties into that negative feedback loop I mentioned. Assassin characters' deflect ability, free guard breaks after a parry, etc. I could go on, but there's no point. These points alone (hell, just the lock on combat alone) completely fuck this game in comparison to its contemporaries.

This game will suffer even more than likes of Overwatch if the matchmaking isn't up to par. Hope they have worked something good out.

Hopefully the people who end up liking this game realize there are much better alternatives (Chivalry, Mount and Blade, Mordhau, etc).

Technically the game is very impressive on PC. I can see where the targeting might be an issue in a crowded melee situation. I also think that's why blocking may not take stamina, otherwise people could gang up and chip away. I'm still in practice mode though. I noticed you can spam block - inputs don't seem to be gated like SF. Finding my range and where I can dodge is a bit tricky. I think a game like this has tremendous potential if Ubisoft sticks with it and evolves it based on player feedback.

Revenge mechanic is garbage (also by far the most useful mechanic, there's no incentive to spec into anything else). Lock-on shouldn't destroy mobility. I'm not sure I agree with your other stuff, though.

The lessened mobility isn't the issue, it's the fact that it's directional combat. The game it essentially copied this from, Mount and Blade, has no lock-on. If you have lock-on combat combined with directional strikes, you lose your ability to effectively deal with multiple attackers. It's that simple. In Mount and Blade you can effectively deal with multiple people thanks to no lock on and a greatly lessened HTK + no stamina system, and in Chivalry: Medieval Warfare there's an actual incentive on fighting more than one person at a time (it's not rare at all for veterans of Chivalry to consistently kill multiple people at a time, even when they're on the same skill level as the guy fighting them).

I mean, stop comparing FH to M&B/Chivalry for a second. Yes, you would have more control without the lock-on mechanic. But removing it would only make everything 10x as chaotic. Having to point your camera in the blocking direction while focusing on the incoming QTE attacks on the HUD? On paper I would agree that it's a flaw, but in practice I think they've done the best they could've achieved with controllers in mind.

Having to point your camera in the blocking direction while focusing on the (1) incoming QTE attacks on the HUD? On paper I would agree that it's a flaw, but in practice I think they've done the best they could've achieved (2) with controllers in mind. (1) QTEs aren't required, good consistent animations are. (2) Found the problem.
