I'm conflicted.
On one hand, I'm decidedly in Camp Give Me All The Aliens In My Space Opera The Odder The Better.
On the other hand, I really want this story to start small and be sort of personal. And for that, I sort of want Ryder to be a bit more insular, and not immediately get along perfectly with every species like Shepard could. I feel like maybe one or two with very different perspectives, one familiar species, and then humans would be good for the inner circle. But I want the aliens to be out there, and know that in MEA2, we might have a chance to be space best friends.
I'unno; I'm undercaffienated.

So are humans boring because they're humans, or because the writers don't seem to have much for many of them to do or say? I think this notion is silly. If Jacob was a turian, but written exactly the same, he'd still be on par with watching paint dry. Making our human sidekicks too colorful risks taking the spotlight away from protag. Bioware for whatever reason has a hard-on for the strong woman: Ashley, Miranda, and Jack. That's 75% and they were exaggeratedly assertive for girls. None of their human females were traditionally feminine. Bioware gave us overcompensating girls who were hyper competitive and aggressive. Compare that to our male humans: Jimmy Vega, Zaeed, Kaidan, and Jacob. Only 50% of them were alpha males [but Zaeed's role is minor]. Even with that fact in mind these guys all had Type B personality. My theory is Bioware developed the sidekicks mainly for BroShep. Miranda mentions that Shepard is the best of humanity. In the ME universe humans are seen as alpha max [along with Krogans]. So they gave humanity's ambassador the strongest personality. The game wouldn't flow smoothly if there was too much alpha headbutting: 1) Boxing scene with our Mexican brother Jimmy Vega 2) Repeatedly putting Miranda in her place 3) Repeatedly putting Ashley in her place

more humans on the squad. humanity #1 Ha, I'm the complete opposite. If I have to play as a human, then give me one other human squadmate, and the other six as alien squadmates. A 1:6 ratio is obviously far more skewed to aliens than they've ever done before, but it's far more interesting that way!

Snarky Hawke along with Varric and Isabela were pretty much my favorite combo.

Is it seven potential squadmates or nine, when you add the two starter human squadmates? If the Asari and Krogan squadmates are a given ... that leaves either three or five additional characters ... some of whom will be squadmates from the MW and some who might be from Andromeda.
Like the thread on how many human squadmates ... mostly, I want the characters to be interesting. Andromeda characters have a chance to be completely different from what we've experienced before ... perhaps along the lines of Javak ... only more so. Vastly different motivations and concerns than our MW colleagues. Vastly different sizes and shapes, perhaps very unique talents (not just renamed talents we've seen before).
Lots of chances to do something interesting ... but I prefer quality over quantity. I'd rather have one really awesome Andromeda species, from a character perspective ... than two, three or five blah characters. I don't want to feel like they've just checked the box for Andromeda characters and simply given us something that could have just as easily been a character from the MW.
This will probably generate some backlash ... but using Garrus as an example ... let me see, his dad was a by-the-book C-Sec cop ... Garrus followed in dad's footsteps ... despite other aspirations ... and chafed under the stultifying bureaucracy of C-Sec ... taking the opportunity to break free, run with a rogue SPECTRE and right many wrongs ... to include being Archangel, all while throwing the rule book out the airlock. Gee ... that's a storyline that no human character has ever played. Honest ... not hating on Garrus ... but that is not a uniquely "alien" character or storyline. His talents? Anti-armor ammo, overload, concussive shot, proximity mine ... frankly, not exactly uniquely "alien" ... so for ME:A ... make any Andromeda character something very different ... to include not just talents, but characterization and motivation.
Is that going to be tough to do? Yeah ... but gee, BioWare, you've had a long time to figure it out and get it right ... longer than the time you spent on ME and ME2 combined.

What if that Salarian we saw on deck isn't even a squaddie.
That be a major troll move by Bioware.

Don't know how you figure since, technically, we've only had a Salarian squaddie for a single game. Lots of NPCs in combat but only Mordin as an actual squaddie.

Some still do, some still are. We're all the heroes of our own lives.

I do agree with the "quality of the companions" sentiments, however, Mass Effect is about exploration and wonder. To me, having too many human companions would take away from that. I'd be fine with 2 human companions but would highly prefer a diverse, mixed crew. Give me several MW species and at least 1 or 2 Helios species.
If I want human companionship there are a million games that I can play that will give that to me. I definitely want good diversity in my Andromeda crew.
With all that said, I highly doubt they're going outnumber human crew members to alien crew members, considering it's a new galaxy and there is bound to be at least one Helios-native who will probably join the crew. I would imagine the other MW species who made the trip will want to have the population numbers to be able to continue their species so I don't see Humans outnumbering the other species by much, which is why I expect a pretty diverse crew.
I'm in space, exploring the unknown, in a completely new galaxy. Give me Aliens.

The protagonist is already a human so bring more aliens to the squad. I believe it will be like ME3. Two human teamates (the starter squad) and the rest will be from other species. That tends to be the pattern at least. I doubt that pattern will change. AS for the rest...I expect one of each from Asari, Turian, Krogan, and Salarian in some form, plus a native species (Khet or something) and that rumored Synthetic. I am hoping for an 8 person squad. I really am.
