Horrible for a lot of reasons. One nasty reason was the interior of the tank was openly lined and covered with asbestos. That is why in tank museums those tanks are welded shut. I meant more in the performance area. Guns were terrible, no armor, horrifically tight interiors with terrible design. To the point I think for some models you were not supposed to move the turret at all since shit gets in the way / impossible to not hit another crew member with something; then again, that's more or less the case with other earlier tanks too. I know, I wanted to add a lesser known problem to the list of shortcomings of Japanese tanks.

WW2-era U.S. Army training film on how to take out a Japanese (Type 95 Ha-Go) tank.
Interesting how you can jam the turret by placing something between a gap between it and the hull.

Interesting how you can jam the turret by placing something between a gap between it and the hull. You should never be able to do that though, tanks always require heavy support by infantry. If you can get so close to a tank that you can jam its moving parts the enemy has screwed up BIG time.

Heck even now, you see the latest Abrams get inside one of those middle east countries they like to invade so much, I'd be scared shittles inside the tank if my vehicle is moving at snail's pace inside the city. It just takes one dude from above with an RPG and you're fucked.

Only in Syria the men are tanks and the thunderdome a city. They send tanks into cities with no infantry support whatsoever and play cat and mouse with basically invisible dudes with rocket launchers. The outcome: tanks get knocked out. I mean what the hell is this. Go forward to 7:00 I sure as hell would not want to become a tank crew in modern warfare, it would feel like a death sentence. Luckily I am ill suited for tank crewman since I'm tall and I already have skills in another area. I think tanks are really damn cool, but right now I would not want to be in one. Speaking of cool, my favorite tank (concept) ever is the BMPT Terminator with the dual 30mm cannons. I actually think those could be very efficient. I mean how often do tanks fight other tanks? You can do that with a guided missile system attached to a tank anyway, leaving room for a tank cannon suited for the main thread - infantry. A large auto cannon makes a lot of sense. Also the Swedish CV90 with its 40mm auto cannon, if 30mm is too small for you.

Luckily I am ill suited for tank crewman since I'm tall and I already have skills in another area. Depends in which country you serve. I sure as fuck wouldn't want to be in any way shape or form related to the military in the middle east. They are terrible, very little in the way of discipline and it seems very much hit and miss. Leaving your life in the hands of Lady luck all the time doesn't sound appealing. Then you have something like the americans, pros: best training and vehicles and tactics, cons: always getting involved in shit, so you're just asking for death to come visit sooner or later. As being too tall to be tank crew, it depends again where you are. This guy that has a channel on Youtube, I don't know his name "The Chieftain" is his nickname, he's super tall and he was an Abrams's crew member. Edit: Nicholas is his name I think now that I remember.

Eh, maybe he wanted to become a tank crew member, who knows. If he has his own channel he must be proud of what he does. I know several guys who are tank crew members and they love what they do, they enlisted solely to drive around in tanks. I have other skills, putting me in a tank would be silly, but silly isn't something unheard of in my countries military. Heck, back in my service time they put me into the NBC squad, I have no idea why......

Russia has recently developed 57mm autocannon turrets for their AFVs, which is derived from the old S-60 anti-aircraft gun. They've developed it for both anti-ground and anti-aircraft purposes.

They weld on lots of spaced cage armor, made from iron bars, lots of it, which defeats shaped charge and HEAT rounds by detonating them prematurely, and they fit 360 deg scanners that immediately picks up any anti-tank missile system that gets activated.

Infantry is in dire need for some upgrades, modern heavy equipment gets more and more dangerous for the average soldier. Infantry really needs those armored exoskeletons.

Not sure if we'll actually see exos any time soon, or at all. A lot of these are just "developments" the military is full of ideas that never took off. I'm sure back then people though jetpacks would eventually be a thing. With how cheap and effective drones are, they're slowly taking a lot of the heavy lifting an infantrymen had to do. It's actually a mixture of air foce and infantry support, all in one. That's why they like drones so much these days. I'm more afraid of the dehumanizing factor. I remember some fighters in the middle east saying that it was all just like a video game for the americans. They were just flying in their apaches (this was a long as time ago) and by just pressing a button they'd kill a bunch of people without even seeing their faces. Nowadays it's even worse with drones. War isn't supposed to be pretty, and if we keep trying to make it "easier" we will grow accustomed to it.

There is no glory or honor in modern warfare. A buddy of mine was a ranger during the first Gulf War. When the Iraqis were retreating out of Kuwait, the allied forces bomb the shit out of the retreating forces, I think the reason was they were not suppose to be leaving with their armored vehicles, major weaponry, etc. Something that was done from a distance with no human interaction. The next day or so he was part of the convoy that drove past that to get into Kuwait. Wow, the devastation he told me. Burnt, melted armor, burnt bodies, some beyond recognition. Body parts lying all over the roadway, he said it was something he would never forget seeing.
I could never be a soldier, I wouldn't be returning home being right in the head after that. I understand why my grandfather became a drunk after World War 2. The things you see, forever burned into your memory.

Ah I would not worry too much about that, the days war started to become dehumanizing is when guns were invented. I remember reading a book of German soldiers on the eastern front who decimated several human wave attacks from the Red Army at night, they were firing their rifles and machine guns hard at the approaching soldiers from several hundred meters way, it was such a volley nobody really knew who hit whom and nobody really felt much guilt. Heck one could argue that war was dehumanizing since the day the longbow archers started to become a thing, they fired volleys at the enemy without even aiming, and they sure were effective. And nowadays with artillery that ship has long sailed.

Here you go. WW2 and cold war tanks. It's almost easier to list what's missing than featured. So no Tiger, no Tiger II, no Panzer IV. But Panther, Panzer III and derivatives though, and the rare Gepard and Leopard I tanks. Soviet lineup pretty weak, just some T34-85 and a T72 (I think, correct me if I'm wrong) British lineup very strong, Churchill, Cromwell, Comet, Matilda II, there's even a Matilda I (I think), Centurion, Chieftain (not running on its own), Challenger. No M3, But a M2 and several different versions of M4 Sherman. No Pershing, But M60, and a rarity, the M103 supertank and a M24 Chaffee.

And nowadays with artillery that ship has long sailed. I have really hesitated to comment this. Well let's see if I hit <Create Post> this time. But I'm highly sceptical to the value of this kind of criticism, and when journalists, politicians, pacifists and enemies take it up, even more so. Less people get killed in wars in later years, than ever before in history. Dramatically less, even. In total numbers and relatively. (And wars last longer, but I'm not going to discuss that aspect now). Djingis Khan slaughtered some 20 million, up close and personal. And he was far from the only one. "Video game-" killing is fine in my book. It's not how you do it. It's always why.

Apparently it was a common (enough) occurrence for U.S. troops in the western front in WW2 not to actually try to hit the enemy or even fire at all. The army would later try to rectify this in training by using human shaped targets instead of round ones in order to desensitize them at the notion of killing people.

It defeats a lot of the points about using human infantry. I'm thinking about power supply. Personal armor is moving along fine, and has saved a lot of lives. But what I think we're seeing is that army ground engagements goes the same way as air: Shooting first is everything. So developments focus on situational awareness. Weapons are so destructive that if you just know where the enemy is, you can kill him. So, drones and networking is the future, even for the infantry.

I always wanted to get some scale tanks or something, but those are astronomically expensive here due to the typical tax-currency exchange-etc bullshit, also not sure where I'd display them, certainly not in this shoe box apartment.

Oh well, maybe when I'm old and rich... (AHAHAHAHA). That reminds me, LevelCap (he's a BF player from the "old guard") has a side channel dedicated to lego stuff, BrickVault it's called I think? He made tons of Star Wars stuff that look absolutely insane, thousands of pieces for a Star Destroyer.
