A look at Italy's main battle tank, the Ariete.

The C1 Ariete is the main battle tank of the Italian Army, developed by a consortium formed by Iveco-Fiat and Oto Melara (CIO, Consorzio Iveco Oto Melara). The chassis and engine were produced by Iveco, while the turret and fire-control system were supplied by Oto Melara. The vehicle carries the latest optical and digital-imaging and fire-control systems, enabling it to fight day and night and to fire on the move. Six prototypes were developed by 1988, which were subject to intensive testing the following year during which the vehicles travelled a combined 16,000 km. Deliveries were first planned for 1993, but in fact took place in 1995 due to delays. Final delivery occurred 8 years later in August 2002.

The Ariete's main armament is a local version of the smoothbore Rheinmetall 120 mm gun, produced by Oto Melara, autofrettaged and stress-hardened to increase durability over extended periods of firing, allowing the use of APFSDS-T and HEAT ammunition. The gun is also adapted to fire most NATO-standard rounds of the same calibre. It carries 42 rounds, 27 of which are stored in a special magazine inside the hull, to the left of the driver's station. The remaining ammunition is stored in the rear turret bustle, separated from the crew compartment with an armoured door. The gun barrel has a thermal insulating sleeve and a fume extractor; it is fully stabilized in both azimuth and elevation by an electro-hydraulic drive system.

Secondary armament consists of a 7.62 mm MG 42/59 coaxial machine gun operated by the tank gunner or commander and an additional 7.62 mm MG 42/59 configured as an anti-aircraft weapon operated by the main-gun loader from his hatch.

The Ariete Mk.2 (or C-2) was revealed in Eurosatory 2002 and is scheduled for production in the 2015-2020 timeframe. It will feature an autoloader, new hydropneumatic suspension, modernized FCS, 1.500 hp engine and more advanced fire control system and additional armour.

That's basically the "once we get exo suits, tanks will be irrelevant" And to quote mister Nicholas from The Chieftan channel, he basically pointed out that if we at some point develop tech to build exosqueletons, just imagine that technology applied to tanks. They're not going anywhere.
Everything fills a role. Sure, I think nowadays the combo Aircraft carrier + aircraft = win in many cases. But not armor nor infantry is going to go away any time soon I think.

I think the mech thing is just cultural stuff, like we keep thinking of space ships, and maybe the evolution will never get us there. Just like thinking about a light saber, as cool as it is, it would be exponentially impractical, and surely whichever tech used to develop them would be way more useful applied in a different field.

well sure without the space race mechs would be pointless, the major point of them is it doesnt matter how high up they drop from the suit wearer is going to survive inside the climate controlled impact proof cocoon... that and you know personalised armour isnt going to die the second some space dust spins past during an emergency spacewalk...

as for tanks there still going to be relevant to some degree just for different reasons and yes the tech used in the exo suits and gundams will obviously be tweaked for the little moving pill boxes... and they will likely still have all the same failings they already do... poor up time lots of maint requirements high price and low utility... lets face it current mbt's are only useful as a heavy armoured gun platform thats relatively speaking difficult to move long distances (theres a reason why they dont drive hundreds of miles)

i would expect railguns to be limited to things like the AS90 replacement rather than put onto normal tanks, and yeah etc development will become a big thing

so there just taking the old duck amphibious armoured personnel carrier concept from ww2 and making it not quite as useful.... (it was also a catamaran design but it had all terrain wheels as well as having modular weapons platform most often with 5" mounted guns)

there were several variants iirc one of which was even capable of diving although from my understanding that one wasn't well received lol

Well, it's meant to be a patrol and fire support vehicle more than anything, and given the countless islands of Indonesia, the concept has merit to it. Also, they didn't have gun stabilization on armor back then.

Well, it's meant to be a patrol and fire support vehicle more than anything, and given the countless islands of Indonesia, the concept has merit to it. Also, they didn't have gun stabilization on armor back then.

if your being honest nothing had gun stabilisation back then....

hence why i said its taking an old idea and making it less useful, if you take the concept and don't update it then your just making a reproduction...

This is a friendly warning to stay away from reactive targets, destroyed targets, practice targets of vehicles or husks of vehicles. You never know what could be inside these targets whether they were real targets or practice.

I don't want you guys to grow an extra arm! Really in all seriousness you need to stay off things you find like this that you don't know the history of. Not all tanks have Depleted Uranium fired at them. But some things have radioactive items/paint and lead inside them. This is all bad for you. Its just not worth the cool picture or collectibles.
