Personally I never got why so many people liked it. I played through it a couple of times and couldn't help but think, "Something seems wrong with Liara's character development." Now before people get mad, I personally need to say that I liked Liara in ME1, but her character development in ME2, LoTSB, and ME3 made little to no sense to me. I mean she starts off as a shy archaeologist who clearly disliked being on Noveria, if you didn't romance her, she'd forget it and move on. In ME2, virtually every part of her ME1 personality seems to have been thrown out the fucking window. I get that the whole thing was supposed to be an act but LoTSB seems to make things even more contradictory by having Liara say that she wants to use the resources to help you stop the resources, but also says that she feels like she "belongs there" like it's for some reason a dream job. ME3 Liara is closer to ME1 Liara, but it still seems like the writers couldn't decide whether she should be the an archaeologist or an info broker, she also had a really bad habit of using the resources to spy on people, rather than actually use the resources to, idk, HELP STOP THE REAPERS, and just proved to be a useless shadow broker in general. I seriously want to know why people like LoTSB and ME2 and ME3 Liara so much, because it just comes across like bad character development. (Feel free to correct me in areas if I am wrong)

Personally, I like Shadow Broker because it's a lot of fun to play. I like ME2/3-Liara better than ME1 with her annoying constant fainting, even though the transition could've been better. Her character development happened mostly in a comic and that is never good. Then again, Liara is not even remotely a favourite character of mine, so I don't care too much about it.

That's true, but even then I heard her character in the comic acted like how she did in ME2. I still prefer ME1 Liara, but that's just me. I'm new to this whole BSN thing.

It's true with the comic, it still seems like there's a transmission missing, but you'll get more insights into her motivations and see how everything went down. The thing for me is, I suppose I can get behind that crap like what happened with Shepard dying can change people a lot, so I think I'm really forgiving in regards to Liara's character development. I'd take radical character change over a character having no development at all. For example, I know some people hate Jack's transition from ME2 into ME3, but personally I love it because it makes so much sense to me. Different folks and all And welcome to this crazy place, hope you'll enjoy your stay

I think what I find jarring about all ME2 DLC was there's absolutely no voice for squadmates. They're ALL silent. Even in Arrival, Joker was voiced by a different actor.
LOTSB is popular because it appeal to Liara's fans.. and there's squadmate respec panel in it

I enjoy the playing of LoTSB. Agreed on Liara's development. Apparently the change took place in a comic I never read. And anyone who thinks being an information broker and an archaeologist are similar fields is seriously mistaken. That naive girl that she was turning into a "very good information broker" stretches credulity. However, that doesn't make that dlc terrible on its own terms, just in terms of how we ended up there.
I don't think anyone who liked Liara of ME1 better to be strange. She was shy and insecure with a schoolgirl crush who had a talent for archaeology. I'd have preferred to see her evolve as an archaeologist. She might have even been a good fit for the Leviathan dlc, though it would have had to be reworked in some way. Honestly, the going after the SB and rescue of Shepard's body would have worked better with Garrus or the Virmire Survivor, not the young archaeologist.

I like it because the Liara romance scene on the Normandy is my favorite scene in the trilogy. I do agree though that her character development is unbelievable from a shy, introverted archaeologist to a successful information broker on what's essentially "white collar" Omega. That criticism is more directed towards ME2 than LotSB specifically, however. LotSB actually has her exit the Illium role to something a little more fitting for her. Liara being the shadow broker, which is a very isolated job, is more believable than working as an information broker on Illium. The latter requires more open ruthlessness, working well with people, etc.
But let's be honest, the "shadow broker" isn't realistic in general. No single person could handle all the (often evidently mundane) secrets of an entire galaxy! They wouldn't even be able to handle just earth's. Yet somehow in ME3, Liara has time to do this and also be a squadmate on the side?!
People don't seem to take much issue with unrealistic and/or unexplained personality shifts in characters. Wrex is a fan favorite yet the Wrex you meet in ME3 acts nothing like the one in ME1 or even ME2; without adequate explanation.

Wrex is a fan favorite yet the Wrex you meet in ME3 acts nothing like the one in ME1 or even ME2; without adequate explanation. I'm curious in what way he's inconsistent? Wrex was a progressive even in ME1. All the dialogue about what went down between he and his father proves that to be true. Honestly, I assume the time he spent with Shepard convinced Wrex he ought to give reformation on Tuchanka another shot. Also, his contribution to the defeat of Sovereign had to give him a greater level of prestige even on places like Tuchanka. Simply put, his words carried greater weight with more people that it had in the past.

You're right about Liara's character development in LoTSB and beyond, yet it's still one of my favourite DLCs. I probably love it despite Liara, instead focusing on Illium, the car chase, the asari spectre, the weather and the incredible Shadow Broker's ship. To this day when I play a lacklustre DLC that reuse environments (like the ones from Dishonored 1) , I think of LoTSB as what a DLC should be. Uniquely handcrafted worlds made just for the DLC and barely anything recycled from the main game. BioWare excel at this. It's a fun, fast, dynamic ride, and honestly I was yearning for it when I was trudging thru The Descent in DAI. But I too was puzzled by her personality bypass, she's so different it doesn't make much sense and the SB title doesn't end up being anywhere near as awesome as it could've been. For the 'teacher's pet' status Liara is thought to have with the devs, they didn't really show her as much attention as I expected. You do at least see more of the old Liara if you romance her, and the comic about her finding Shep's body does add to it.

It's DLC and it's fun to play it. It also adds some fun different playable dimensions to the Liara romance depending on when you do and if you're cheating on her and who you're cheating with. It also gives some great perks.

the Shadow Broker DLC is my 2nd fav MET DLC, despite hating the blue Asari who shall not be named, with the passion of thousands of burning suns.
I like the DLC for it's fun gameplay (the office building opening, the skycar chase followed by a mid-boss fight, invading the Shadow Broker base/ship and the main villain (great cinematic and a nice surprise too) and it's story aside who becomes the new Shadow Broker afterwards.

It takes place during the discussion with all the interrupts just after to take down Vasir. With Jack, you can even trigger dialogue if you've just had the casual sex with her. Depending on when you do everything (with a Male Shep at least), you can have him cheat, get reprimanded, reconsider and go back to Liara... and then have him fall off the wagon again.

I liked LotSB because Liara ninjamanced my femShep in ME1, and her freaky behavior in the DLC made it easy to break up with her Other than that, I agree with others that it was fun to play. I liked the car chase sequence, and the SB's space station had an immersive atmosphere for me. It really felt like Shepard could have gotten blown off the top of the station with any misstep.

It's great that some of you guys enjoy it. I just feel, story wise, it kinda fell on it's ass. If ME1 Liara is anything to go off of, then being the shadow broker doesn't fit her character AT ALL under any circumstances. I ended up going with Peebee in Andromeda because I felt her character development was pretty solid. Might just re-romance Tali in the OT.

When Shepard asks her why she gave her/his body to Cerberus, the asari wil say, "was I suppose to let my friend die...". Hold up. Where's this friend stuff coming from? When Shepard tells her that he/she would throw her back in the volcano, I doubt Sheprd wants to be friends. Mine didn't. The other thing is if someone told me they would throw me back in a volcano, I wouldn't call that person a friend. As far as the dying thing. Shepard is already dead. So what is she talking about? After getting to her apartment, Shepard's armor is seen in a glass case on display like its a trophy. Then Shepard's DNA is all over the apartment. Had Shepard never been brought back, what exactly would she have done with the DNA? She has serious mental problems. During the car chase, she whine like a little baby. So much for that so-called ruthless crap. That's because there's nothing ruthless at all. Why was this character a squadmate? I will say Vasir I liked. Too bad couldn't have her and kill the t'soni. After fighting Vasir, there is 3 paragon interrupts. Why couldn't there be 3 renegade interrupts? renegade interrupt #1 Shepard: Before anything else happens, how about answering a couple of questions? Did you tell anyone or at least make any effort to tell anyone Cerberus had my body? Liara: I...I....don't know.........
renegade interrupt #2 Shepard: Why do you have my armor in your apartment on display like its some kind of prize? Liara: That's.....I.......I....
renegade interrupt #3 Shepard: If you can't answer my questions, I'm leaving. Liara: Shepard....I...can't... Shepard: That's what I thought. You're suffering from cat-got-your-tongue syndrome. While you go see a doctor about that, I will be heading back to my ship. One last thing. I don't ever want to see you again. Understand?
If Shepard is romancing Liara, he/she ends the relationship right there. In ME3, what could happen is Liara doesn't show up after the first two dreams and there is no scene about the time capsule. She also doesn't offer the gift at the FOB. The same could happen for a Shepard that didn't romance her.
After the broker throws his desk, Shepard believes its mre important to keep the asari safe. Why? What if Shepard has a LI? Is the asari more important? I guess so going by the scene. I know if I was Thane, Garrus, Miranda, Jack, Jacob, Tali, I would end the relationship right away since Shepard cares more abut the asari. It could have an effect in ME3 where Shepard encounters them with them having a different tone of voice. After the broker is defeated, the asari cries like a baby. Why didn't she cry after all the others that were killed? Nothing ruthless about the character at all. Then she says she can finally help you stop the reapers. What? There was nothing stopping her in the first place. That's right. She was obsessed with finding Faron. Really? A lot of good that's going to do when the reapers show up Once on the Normandy, she hands Shepard's dogtags. I won't get into details about that, but here's what I posted about that in another thread She mentions that it her birthday soon. Shepard says he/she will get her something. Liara will say, "You're alive again. I got everything I want." What? Javik? I need you in my cabin to throw someone out the airlock Just before leaving, Shepard has a what-the-crap hug. Why wasn't there an option to hug her or not ? The player got that option after the broker was killed. Overall the dlc is crap. Apparently Bioware wanted the alien to be more important then anyone, including Shepard's mother. The other thing is that Shepard isn't able to ask questions. I would be curious why Bioware didn't allow Shepard to ask questions? Is it because they didn't want to cause any friction between the alien and Shepard?

Regardless I have to agree, I feel that the Liara in the later games was REALLY shoved down players throats. In ME1 I feel it wasn't THAT bad, unlike Ashley (Feel free to disagree with me), in the later games though, they went overboard. Those renegade options should've been added to the game, maybe you kill the shadow broker afterwards and because of those interrupts, Liara DOESN'T become the Shadow Broker. Like I said in an eariler post, I preferred Peebee over Liara simply because I felt Peebee had better character development. Not everyone does like Peebs though.

I actually agree with pretty much everything you said here, despite enjoying the DLC anyway. Liara is Shepard's 19-year-old clingy girlfriend/annoying former roommate in this DLC. I want to do Liara's full romance at some point because I do like her in ME3, but it's going to take some insane headcanoning to get through this episode and have Shepard still want to romance her. I especially agree with you about Shepard's inability to ask questions. The ruse in the apartment was so obvious, and yet Shepard is forced to be gullible about it.

While you go see a octor about that, I will be heading back to my ship.

AND I'D APPRECIATE YOU USING IT FROM NOW ON!" lol I actually love Liara, but this post was really funny. And I see you carried over your anger about that whole "armor on display" thing from the old BSN forums. Haha. Partially because I almost always romanced Liara, I never had a problem with it. Outside of that, it's hard for me to be upset with someone putting a piece of armor of someone they knew (even if you threatened to throw them in a volcano) on display when that person (Shepard) saved the galaxy. I mean, people put friggin footballs that are merely signed by a certain player (who didn't save the galaxy) on display, yet no one finds that strange. People also don't find it strange when a geth wears part of your old armor. It would be nice if you could challenge Liara about the things you mentioned. We all know that Bioware scripted Shepard to like Liara to a certain degree with little wiggle room. It's just one of those lack-of-role-playing things players need to accept. Bioware went even further with this in ME:A since you're unable to not recruit, kill, cast out, or even flatly state you don't like any of your companions. Shame. It's also not like you're forced to be ok with Liara after trapping you in an escape pod and sending you into a volcano with no exit plan like another asari...

I still say the same, nearly word-for-word, about the dlc each time I comment about it So if someone else did the same as Liara, you wouldn't have a problem? That's a poor comparison. I would guess the biggest reason is the player gets to ask the geth about that whereas with the asari, that question can't be asked. I do agree it is strange a geth would take the armor and put it on its platform. I would say Bioware was playing it safe. Maybe in the next game the player will have the opportunity to not recruit all squadmates, kill them, tell them to get lost or say I don't like you to their face My Shepard would have thrown the stowaway in the lava. I would have left her on the planet. My Ryder would be pissed, turn her over to Nexus security to explain why she used Initiative property to put the pathfinder and another squadmate life in danger

Player's agency is the key here. Every other character except her are optional, with or without romance state. There's multitude of path and interactions that you take that was carried through. But Liara is ALWAYS written the same in all four games. The ONLY difference for her is romance state but even this was heavily implied by Bioware that she is the default preferential romance.
A lot of her characterization required a LOT of acceptance over her various behaviors and inconsistencies, instead of addressing each of them appropriately, they just pile on everything making her a multitasking genius archeologist superbiotic crime lord asari etc. I play Shepard as a woman who have no time to care about her because the galaxy need saving and there are more worrying things to do than giving attention to a childish alien and her excessive overly-attached crush.
When she display pathological behaviors; cyber stalking, collecting trophies from your corpse, emotional bribery; as a player, we should have the option to say no to her rather than encourage her further. But Bioware are content with adding on every plot devices they could think off for that behaviors because she is the magical stagnant character that the fandom accept without questions. This preferential treatment for her alienate EVERY other characters in the game as if their presence was meaningless compared to Liara fans.
And not every one of us like her and yet we're all being constantly reminded of this every single time we play the games. Through animations, through the stories. If you put off Therum until at the end of the game, EVERYONE telling you into to get her even when she's fairly useless without the Cipher and Virmire's beacon in combination. There's really no need for her to mind meld more than once. She is the default character in most of the DLCs; Lair of the Shadow Broker, From Ashes, Citadel DLC (especially if you don't romance other ME3's squadmate). You go to Andromeda and you can't even escape her finding some ways to leave a mark on Ryder's family. Things like these doesn't make her more endearing, we're sick of Liara T'Soni.

Yikes. In ME1, she is required, but can be rescued at the last possible moment. In ME2, she can be avoided. In ME3, she is seen after the first two dreams and is required for Thessia. There's no reason for her to show up after the first two dreams. Regards to the stowaway. I would have made her an option to recruit or not.

Yes, I remember being ninjamanced by her in my first MET playthrough. I thought I was just being friendly, but little did I know I was romancing her. I couldn't romance who I wanted to at the time but knew the day would come. I just let it go. My first time with ME2, I don't think I had LotSB installed so I missed out on any choice to reject her. My romance was only in this game for like 2 minutes and wasn't very happy with me. Still, I bided my time. Then, in ME3, she basically jumps me on Mars and we're together after having almost no contact in 2-1/2 years. Yet, we're supposed to be together. I got on romancing Kaidan ASAP. Never flirted with her but she gave me the cold shoulder for a second when she found out about Kaidan. After that, she defaults to being my dear friend no matter what has happened. It's really bizarre. I don't dislike Liara but do I have to hold her in higher regard than, say, James? I definitely like my bro Garrus better.
