I love Hawke the most, despite (or maybe, perversely, because of) Dragon Age 2's legion of flaws. Hawke really stands out.
I also quite like my dwarves, of course, and am very fond of my wardens and inquisitors.... But something about that first Hawke, where literally everything (even on a metalevel) is out to get her and she just keeps trying, just melted my cantankerous old heart.
...Then I may have made a certain choice in Inquisition because it's what she would want -- always the hero. And been sad for days. I'm against abusive relationships, except the one between Bioware and my feels.

It's a tough choice for me, but ultimately the Inquisitor wins because they have voice acting and race selection. I've grown strongly attached to a greater percentage of my Inquisitors than either my Wardens or Hawkes for those reasons.
However, my very favourite DA protagonist that I've ever made remains my noble dwarf Warden.

The Inquisitor, because I can play a Qunari.
For me, it's Inquisitor > Warden >>>>>> Hawke.
That isn't to say that I didn't enjoy playing Hawke, but I really love having choices in regards to race and background. The more it's already fleshed out, the less interested I am.

1. (Sarcastic) Hawke 2. The Warden 3. The Inquisitor
When this topic comes up, I find it often boils down to whether you prefer a more "blank slate" protagonist or one with a more defined personality. I happened to love "Purple" Hawke's personality and for me, easily had the most memorable lines of any of the protagonists. That said, I do prefer the games with multiple races and that's really the only strike I have against Hawke.
The Inquisitor had some great VAs, but was written to have a much more... I'm struggling to come up with some other word than "bland" personality. So... yeah, while I thought Inky got involved in a number of interesting situations, Inky as a character was probably the least interesting person in the game. I honestly couldn't recite 3 memorable lines from the Inquisitor in the entire core game.
So in the end, while you do run a greater risk of not liking the character, I do prefer a protagonist with a little more defined personality. If the magic happens and it works for you, it can elevate the quality of nearly all the conversations you have in the game.

Hawke be like
Inky be like
Warden be like
(Female) Hawke is my favourite videogame protagonist of all time. She just has it all. She makes me laugh and cry and everything in between. She's got the perfect VA, a great backstory and wonderful chemistry with everyone around her. I love it how, with Hawke, you can be a total goofball despite being part of such a tragic story. Or you can try to be a freedom fighter or just a human battering ram. In most cases, Hawke's life sucks, but she just digs in and pushes on and perhaps cracks some stupid joke. Sarcastic Hawke is obviously great, but red Hawke is just as good. Red Hawke sounds so badass and a bit sexy. With Hawke, everything was personal. And that's why I loved her.
The Inquisitor starred in many dramatic events and had great potential, but the problem was that nothing felt personal. Sure, you have more options, but their story always remained bland and it gave me zero feels. Inky was just some random faceless hero who happened to become the chosen one and consequently saved the world. No background, no family, no nothing since before the events of DAI. Does not make for good drama. Romance with Cullen was sweet, though. The Warden was not fully voiced and was part of a mediocre story with a below-average supporting cast. So they are on the bottom. My douchebag Cousland who slept with everyone and married Anora was amusing, but we didn't really connect on an emotional level ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/6576594/images/CeRUIfXurYhaBmWjMBkt.png)

I think the Inquisitor will always hold a special place over the others. They're a bit more nuanced in their demeanor, less of a stereotype and tend to gain more sympathy from me in their backstories. I do wish there was more exploration about their clan, their family, their mercenary group and Carta ties, but I feel less restricted with them.

I happened to love "Purple" Hawke's personality and for me, easily had the most memorable lines of any of the protagonists. That said, I do prefer the games with multiple races and that's really the only strike I have against Hawke. Same, I feel like I'd be able to describe [sarcastic] Hawke strictly wrt personality traits. I wouldn't be able to do the same with the Inquisitor, I'd be able to do so with MY Inquisitor as in the personality I imagine for them but even if I do so it's mostly headcanon since the game usually doesn't give me the responses that would embody what I imagine. There's an obvious level of serendipity (or Bioware's foresight) here because if I only had diplomatic or aggro Hawke to choose from it would've been awful and maybe that would've been true even if sarcastic Hawke was written differently. Anyway I feel like Hawke's setness wrt their race and background can be divorced from the personality aspect, in other words I don't think we need to lose race selection to have the personality. Hawke had a certain flair and bite that's completely missing in the Inquisitor and I, at least, would sacrifice a marginal loss of character tone for that to be back in DA4.

I was reading the responces, and wanted to add that peculiarly Hawke for me wins despite me hating: to play humans overall, not being able to pick my own background, the female voice for Hawke A LOT, so having to play non-preferred gender to have a defined family that the name I picked for him never showing in the game, so basically, by default being named Hawke.
and thinking that CC overall is very meh.
If it did not have CC I would not even buy the game.
But I ended up loving it despite all those drawbacks b/c he's lovable and the game's awesome at accommodating me as a co-creative gamer in other ways as no other game did. Go figure.

Warden. My Warden really felt like 'my' character, something that was a bit lost in later games.

My favorite is the Warden. I could play through an actual origin story that made some of the things that happened later much more personal, and I really liked his entourage too. I cared about what happened to him and his friends. He was the last BioWare protagonist who truly felt like my own character.
Sarcastic Hawke had some damn funny moments, but he felt like playing BioWare's character, not my own, in a story that was mostly on rails and struggled to keep my interest, with a cast that had too many people I didn't find really likeable. The first BioWare game where I didn't immediately click "New game" after finishing it. Or ever again.
And yeah, the Inquisitor. So bland. I'm honestly not sure whether the protagonist's voice acting made this game better or worse.

Without giving a long explanation: Grey Wardens = Nights Watch Dark Spawn = White Walkers Morrigan Romance = Jon fell in love with a wildling Cousland Origin= red wedding scenario, and the warden becomes one of the last living couslands. House Howe = House Frey. The warden becomes the grey warden commander, and attempts to bring all nations and peoples together to fight the darkspawn. It's not a mirror version of game of thrones, but there is similarities between it and the Cousland Warden.

I don't want to choose, they're all stubborn idiots who bumble their way to occasional success, and that makes each of them entertaining in their own way. ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/6576594/images/RebJidSPcxyF0U0Rr0uW.png) But the one I'd most want to be is the marquis of Serault. Love me some weird magic forests, reminds me of the kind of fantasy books I loved as a kid. Much as I enjoy combat, I would pay good money for a game about dicking around in an enchanted forest and also court intrigue sometimes... and that's essentially what Last Court is. It's one of the things I loved about Jade Empire too, the forests were dense and had eccentric characters and creatures hidden in the trees.

I thought this had been done before, lol. I found my post too, which was pretty similar to mine from this round. Interestingly, the results are a bit different so far. It was pretty close between the 3 back then. I wonder if people's opinions have really changed or whether it is just a different set of people voting.

They are not bad books, worth a read, first three in particular, then it's downhill.

The show made me want to buy and read the books but when I bought them and began the first book, I found out the series wasn't finished, and the author is taking his sweet time finishing them. From what I take from long time fans, there is a chance he might not even finish them. I'm going to start reading the books when all of them are finished. I hate getting into something, only to find out its not finished.
